I have to say this was the highlight of our trip to southern New Mexico, partly due to the fact it was such an unexpected surprise. I had it listed on the itinerary as "stop by if we have time", but then saw a great print hanging in a photography shop in T&C, that was taken from the top of the dam, so decided to definitely check it out. Although since 9/11 you are no longer able to go on top of the dam, the views from the vicinity were STUNNING. The colors were amazing with the turqois water against the yellow and purple rocks, and the rocks and terrain were such interesting shapes. There were also a few cute campsites nearby.
Also loved the beach area - was scenery was outerworldly. Just careful about getting stuck in the sand if you have a smaller vehicle but it did seem like there was someone at the park dedicated to towing the cars that got stuck.
Only negative at the beach area was that sometimes the sand blowing on you by the strong winds was a bit uncomforable. Recommend having something to cover your arms and legs to avoid this.
