“almost the worst place i ever stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

My family members had stayed at this hotel a few years ago, loved it and thought it was a good idea for us to stay there during our 2 week vacation. There were 7 of us and we had made reservations 6 months earlier. We were all traveling together. When we arrived on motorcycles, they had is move our bikes 3 times. Then when we went to check in, the front desk girl was rude when we all walked in at the same time. She made rude remarks about the previous owners and was rude to two of the people in our group. We then went to dinner. The dining room was closed so we ate in the bar. We all ordered steaks with all the trimmings. We were then told they had no bread and no potatoes. The steaks were very small and tough. We will never stay there again.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

This will definitely be my only stop from OK to CO and back. Love the atmosphere, the attention to detail in maintaining the Old West feel, but the rooms were also first class! I was really impressed. Best night's sleep I had in a long time. The breakfast that is included with the room price is yummy and huge portioned. The saloon is fun, has a good variety of local beers, and even has a nice patio. I love Clayton and this hotel!

We were coming from CO to OK and back west again in one day, and we knew we wanted to stay someplace neat but were short on time to get to anything. Still, we headed out and with little to no droid access in the OK panhandle, we managed to get a hold of my son who looked up the site, called and booked us a room.
We rolled in at 1:00 and the owner was up waiting for us, happy we arrived safe. (She'd also left a voice mail on our phone telling us to call a number if no one was up when we got there, and to get there safe.)
Our room was simple but very cozy. Yes, trains go by in the night and blow their horns, but if you are expecting it, it's not so bad. We've actually started looking for hotels related to trains, crazy I know, but there you have it. Don't say you weren't warned.
The next morning we got up and went down to breakfast and the owner was already up waiting tables. We both ordered a breakfast burrito with green chile, which was outstanding. While we were sitting there talking, we decided to stay one more night.
We spent the day driving to the Capulin Volcano and back, going to Lake Clayton to see the dino tracks, and then walking around town taking a lot of pictures of everything. All over people were friendly. The park rangers, the hotel staff. We stopped at the shop in Capulin and bought some snacks and gift items, and the prices were very reasonable for local art.
Since we were stuffed from breakfast, we didn't eat lunch. We had dinner in the saloon at the hotel. We discovered Santa Fe Brewing had a porter on tap. Our first try for that brewery, and it was outstanding!
Dinner was good, the place was pretty packed with both locals and travelers. The Texas sheet cake for desert wasn't QUITE was grandma used to make, but then again, nothing ever is!
Back up to the room and found a movie on tv, laid their like a python that ate a deer and tried to digest all that good food. Another night, everything was quiet (but the trains) and up the next morning.
Husband got the burrito again, and I had the pancakes, again, great food.
This whole area is a hidden gem. We left north from Des Moines, NM and went through Folsom, beautiful sweeping roads, little canyons, Comanche National Grassland, and lots of old stone houses to look for.
Thanks for the great stay, can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Ask for the 2nd story with the balcony, so you can sit on the street front and watch the world go by...

We had breakfast in the dining room which was really great, then took a tour of the hotel. We plan to return for a stay as it was really historic, clean, and friendly.

very nicely re-done--simple, clean, rooms--new "rustic" (iron and pine) furniture--saloon and restaurant on premises--good food--micro brews available--our "waitress" at breakfast was one of the owners--amazing the level of friendly service you get from those who want their business to prosper, as opposed to what you get from an employee who doesn't really care--however, we got exceptional service from everyone we came in contact with--jerry, a fellow history nut like me, took time to e mail me several pages he had written on local historical events--we will stay there again--

My wife and I enjoy staying in historic hotels whenever we can and this is one of the best in the southwest. Redone in 2005, the rooms are great, beds comfy and bathrooms are clean and modern, but in classic historic style.

Please don't compare this to the modern motels along the highway. The experience here is historic, coupled with the positive experience of the two families who brought this place back from the dead. We were stranded here in the now-famous blizzard of Dec. 2011. The staff could not have been more accommodating. The restaurant is open for all three meals and offers a nice menu for a small town. There's also a very cute shop next door that caters to ladies. Most would not consider Clayton, NM a destination, but if you're traveling through and the map tells you Clayton looks like a good stopping point, call the Eklund and reserve a room. Prices are at or below the competitors along the highway and the best food in town is right downstairs. You'll talk about it later with your friends, I guarantee.

By the way, be sure to look at the scrapbooks of old pictures in the lobby. I won't spoil the experience but tell you there was a very unusual and famous hanging that occurred in Clayton in the nineteenth century.

Room Tip: Choose the top floor to avoid the noise of people above you. The staff will let you tour the availab...
