“Delicious Food on a Beautiful Drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

We went to the Sanctuary (which is amazing) and stopped for an early dinner. We had great service and the food was delicious. I shared the shrimp enchiladas. Very good! They give you sopapillas and honey which were the perfect way to end the meal.

“Most Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

After touring the Sanctuary in Chimayo we decided to have an early dinner. The food and service were both excellent. The restaurant is nicely decorated and cozy and there was a nice choice of entrees. Definitely a must if you've come all the way to visit the Sanctuary.

“Reclusive Restaurant with Great Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

This was a repeat visit for us to this fine restaurant after an absence of a couple years, and it was as fine as we remembered it from previously. The food is traditional New Mexician, garnished with their own chili-infused sauce. Simply outstanding. Try the marinated pork - just fantastic. There were four of us, and all our dishes were excellent!

Now for the location... an oasis in typical high-desert New Mexico, located next to the Sanctuary of Chimayo. All I can say is that it is an experience you have to indulge yourself with - the restaurant is set in a wooded area, in a large converted couse, which has been added on and on and on. We love it. Will be going back agian next time we are in the Sante Fe area.

“Regrettably, it's a has-been.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013 via mobile

We so much wanted to re-live our amazing dinner from 30 years ago, but it wasn't to be. This venerable restaurant sadly is average--just so-so. Our dishes: green chile, chile rellennos, and pork adovado were somewhat disappointing: not good enough to praise, not bad enough to send back. The rellennos had too much fried breading on them. The bowl of green chile stew was thin and short of meat. As we exited,, we wondered what all the fuss was about years ago. Perhaps our palates have changed? On the plus side, the service was polite, prompt, and attentive. Bottom line, you will leave happy if you enter with modest expectations. But sadly the descriptor "world renowned" no longer applies.

“A classic of New Mexican cuisine, with one caveat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

This very out-of-the-way restaurant has long been a standard bearer for the distinctive cuisine of northern New Mexico. Its small-town setting is scenic, the restaurant itself is attractive, and the drive to get there passes through wild, rugged country with its own stark beauty. And oh yes, the food: the standard New Mexican dishes (chiles rellenos, stuffed sopaipillas, etc.) are all on order along with a few more "Mexican" offerings (there is a difference between "Mexican" and "New Mexican") and some interesting drinks. I've eaten there many times and generally recommend it highly, but one minor caveat: you'll probably do better in both service and quality of food if you're there as a couple rather than as part of a large party. Large groups seem to overtax the staff and can produce long waits, and for some reason I've never figured out, the quality can suffer along with the promptness if you're part of a big group. This shortcoming is unfortunate, as both the reputation of the place and its physical layout make it popular for group dinners of people coming from Santa Fe, Los Alamos, etc. Try to get your group to go to one of the many strong dining candidates in the area bounded by Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Taos, and save this one for yourself and your partner; you'll be glad you did.
