During my trip to Bhutan we had a night's stay at Phunaka and we could not get our rooms in the preferred hotel. So we were recommended Dragon's nest for our stay.
Good things first -
Location. The hotel is located very close to Phunaka and located on the bank of the river. This brings a lovely breeze through the evening which is greatly needed in this very warm place.
Parking - Hotel has nice parking area and you get a chance to park your vehicle right next to your door.
Flexibility with rooms - Management was flexible enough to let us change the room as the first room they offered was really bad
Large rooms - Rooms are large enough with decent sized bathrooms.
Now the things that did not go well
Staff - They didn't seem to be interested at all in anything. Rather they looked like they are being forced to serve by the management. They were rather curt (I am hoping that this was not really a behavior but due to language challenges)
Frond Desk - Typically there is none at the front desk and even if there is one, they are not interested in attending to you.
WiFi - WiFi is available. Works only around the front desk and restaurant. Sometimes you get it in your room
There are no aircon in the room. Phunaka being a warm and humid place, it could get a little too uncomfortable to sleep. There are noisy fans in the room that could just add to your uncomfortable sleep.
Rooms are not clean and are very aged. Everything in the room had stains and mildew. Bathroom had foul smell from drainage.
Cockroaches - They were crawling everywhere. I killed atleast 5 of them in the night and 5 were found dead in the bathroom the next day.
Restaurant - Restaurant served OK food. Staff were always confused. Cutlery and plates were stinking. We had to request them to change it many times before we could start having our food. Restaurant staff was the worst I have ever come across. Apart from being curt, you are also shouted at when you request for a menu or options we have at the restaurant.
Sleep quality - Really poor. i woke up tired the next day with hardly any sleep in the uncomfortable environment that the hotel had to offer.
So why would you stay here - I do not know. I would rather sleep in my car if I can't find a hotel in this area.
For good rooms look elsewhere. I would recommend Amankora. If you must stay here, look for rooms on...
