“A must see, and especially so during a Teschu!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

Located at the confluence of the Mo-chu and Pho-chu rivers, the Punakha dzong is one of Bhutan's most spectacular. And even more so during the tsechu (festival) in Feb/March.

“Gorgeous Dzong”

It was a long drive to Punakha and this Dzong from Thimpu and well worth it. The decorations are gorgeous.

“Huge fortress at the junction of two rivers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

The dzong (fortress) is set at the meeting point of two large rivers in the Punahka Valley and is approached across and ancient bridge. The Dzong, I believe is the traditional setting for the coronation of Bhutan's kings. There are several courtyards and many government officials have offices here. The grounds are beautiful and the architecture some of the best in Bhutan.

“Breathtaking - A Must See”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

Called the "Palace of Great Happiness", the Punakha Dzong is located at the junction of 2 rivers. Completed in 1638 as a fortress, this Dzong has been beautifully maintained as it was when it was originally built. The sheer size and beauty of the building & the wood carvings, takes your breath away. You are able to enter the Dzong but there are certain areas that are restricted. The main Buddhist temple is magnificent with its colour & history and devotion to the Lord Buddha and the Shrabdrung Nagawang Namgyal (the "Unifier of Bhutan"). Photographs can be taken but not in the temple itself. A must see if you visit Bhutan.
