“Old place very well maintained”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Bhumthang..the swiss of Bhutan! What a place!! This is really a swiss of Bhutan. This is located in 4 picturesque valleys. You will get a feel of being in Scotland when you roam around in Jakar.

Jakar village resort is family run hotel located right near the Jakar Dzong. This is an old property but well maintained. Food was good. They brew their own coffee. Rooms are clean.

Staff is bit rude. They delayed breakfast even when we told them we need it early. Also, since ours was large group, 4-5 people were left to have breakfast and they told that breakfast was over! Can’t understand how it can be over when few people haven’t had it! Later after a bit of argument they made it again and served breakfast. This delayed our overall schedule for the day and we ended up reaching Mongar at 08:00PM.

Our room was upstairs with an enclosed back porch with a view of the more rural part of the village, The place was clean and nice however there were mothballs in the sink, behind the sink, in the closet and my wife objected to the smell. We looked for and found most of them. Apparently the Buddhist won't kill anything, not even bugs, so the moth balls keep the bugs away. We saw no bugs. Other than that, beautiful hotel. The owner is retired from military and government, world traveler, very intelligent, well-versed in many areas. He gave a talk and answered questions which I had not been able to get other Bhutanese to answer. We gained great insight into Bhutanese government, culture and what works and doesn't work, as well as different take on Buddhism. Food was great. Wi-fi in lobby/restaurant, not in rooms. Towels are clean but not very white...apparently they don't use bleach, but that's OK, they dry the linens outdoors on lines!

Room Tip: Upstairs on the back side will afford you greater privacy and quiet. We left our bottles of water le...

We stayed here for 2 days. We had taken standard rooms which not so spacious however still managable. Rooms are small with good interior and basic amenities. However the service is not that great! One of the main problem there is no phone in the rooms hence it is difficult to order for room service. In case you need anything you have to walk upto the restaurant to ask for his.Staffs are well behaved . Please dont try baquet noodles or momo it is horrible however baquet pancake is very nice . They served it for breakfast.Over all good. If no other option left you might want to go to this place to stay.

Room Tip: standard rooms are very small

I spent 2 nights in the first week of May, 2014 in Jakar Village Lodge with my family. It was a memorable experience to stay at Jakar Village Lodge and experience the pristine beauty of this valley. With excellent hospitality from the hosts, the experience turned magical!

When I checked in, I realized that all 3 rooms were on the 1st Floor. Unfortunately my request for 2 rooms with minimum of no stairs had not reached the hotel. However, the hotel manager quickly understood my problem and gave me 2 rooms on the ground floor within a very short time while we enjoyed hot tea/coffee at the Hotel Lobby.

On both days I started my day early by walking on the road leading towards the Jakar Dzong and doing some bird photography. Each day I was rewarded with some beautiful bird pics!

Later in the day we enjoyed our visits to the Jempel Lakhang temple and 2 other temples. The short walk to Jempel Lakhang from the Kurje Monastry was very enjoyable too! There were some souvenir shops around those temples that sell souvenirs at very reasonable prices too.

Jakar town is a small town but quite enjoyable. We enjoyed ice creams in one of the shops to beat the cold :) !

The food at the hotel is excellent and hosts attend to you and give you company. The hotel owner (a very energetic gentleman for his age!) answers all your queries regarding Bhutan's history, culture etc. and makes it even better.

The rooms are clean and cater to all requirements. Bathrooms are clean and have hot water available for some relaxing showers. The first floor rooms have small but cute balconies overlooking the valley. There are some apple trees right outside your window!

Heaters are necessary even in summer because it can get cold.

The Jakar Dzong is beautiful too and a very peaceful place to visit. Overall, I would rate the hotel as an excellent place to stay to enjoy the beautiful village of Jakar in Bhutan.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground & first floor are same in terms of amenities. For senior citizens ground flo...

A delightful place ... a place where the owner clearly is (rightfully) proud of the lodge and his country. Food is outstanding. Not many places where one can say that we were in the place that the King has visited!
