“number one!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2008

We've just spend 5 weeks in Vietnam and our stay in Phu Quoc's Mango Bay Resort was a highlight.
We consulted tripadvisor and originally wanted to stay at Bo resort, since we saw comments about a bad manager in Mango Bay. However, since our first choice was fully booked, we tried Mango Bay and were really pleased! The old manager is gone for nearly one year (!) and the French person who is now in charge is outstanding: discrete and higly efficient when needed. He is assisted by a Vietnamese person who is also very friendly and helpfull.
We appreciated details such as free beach towels, free bottles of water twice a day...
It's a lovely place to swim, read and unwind.

I cannot give this the lowest rate 'cause I have seen worst, but not in Vietnam

We actually booked this location based on the revue here on tripadvisor.com.

I was traveling with my inlaws who are born in Vietnam, when they ask for the Vietnamese menu "not available", but the staff doesn't speak English they always say yes specially when they don't understand(grrr.).

here are some points to consider (if you need to change your mind)
- it's 15 minutes of 4x4 from the airport
- only one restaurant, average meal $7-10
- if it rain on your $85/night bed it's not there problem
- and if the cows pooped in your bungalow's pathway that's your problem too
-ceiling fan won't keep you cool with mosquito net down

When I asked for a reduction in because it rain inside our bed, not ounce but twice, they laugh, I said it was not funny specially I reported the day before.

I got $20 off my $300 bill for the two days,

Bottom line NOT recommended

Twenty Seven basic but stylish bungalows, most with soothing outdoor showers. This is a resort taking preservation of the pristine environment it occupies seriously. Solar hot water, natural ventilation and electric fans and absolute peace and isolation. The simple but stylish accommodation is spread over a stunning piece of land fronting remote Ong-Lang beach. The restaurant is in a magical spot and one of the best places to eat on the island. French resort manger Ronan runs a classy operation. It’s the kind of place you come to and don’t leave. They have their own boat and the best snorkelling on the island is close by at Mong Tay and Doi Moi islands.

High season: Fisherman Bungalow $55, Rammed Earth Bungalow $60 and Plantation Bungalow $80. It’s usually heavily booked. || [-]

Although the weather wasn't very clement for our 5 days passed at the resort we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. An idyllic setting, close by the beach, we stayed in a rammed earth bungalow. Food was very good and the service excellent, although one or two serving people would need some lessons in French or English, although this does not distract from the welcoming smiles and general pleasantness. Ideal for chilling out for all ages except perhaps lively teenagers.
Only thing that did annoy us was having to pay for a refill of coffee at breakfast(but not for tea!!).
Otherwise a good few things to do on the island where management were helpful in the different arrangements.

We have just returned from what can only be described as a perfect stay at Mango Bay resort. We stayed in a fishermans hut (room 10) which cost $45 a night including breakfast. The hut was simply furnished with lovely wooden furniture, the best mosquito net we have ever come across, outdoor bathroom and a verandah which had unbroken views of the sea.

The resort is centred around a shaded dining area where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sun go down. The food is excellent and the BBQ squid the best we have tasted!! The resort is sympathetically done and there is plenty of space so guests are not on top of one another and you can really do what you came to do, sit back and relax.

The beach is immaculate and lined with umbrellas and loungers and the waters are clear and warm. Ong lang beach is north of the town and main beach area. Mango bay is isolated from the other places to stay in the area, so you really can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the place. If you want to get out and about you can hire a moto which staff will happily organise for you.

If you are looking for peace in lovely surroundings, with great food and service I cannot recommend Mango Bay highly enough. Just lovely....

We've just returned ourselves from a great week at Mango Bay...but feeling a bit put off by the management, thought I'd check if others had similiar experiences. Not surprisingly, I couldn't agree more with the previous guest (Jan 07) on all aspects of Mango Bay.

While I've given the overall experience an 'above average' rating, Mango Bay has problems that with correction could easily produce an 'excellent' rating.

To start, we stayed for 6 nights in a rammed earth bungalow (No. 6) which did NOT have a sea view and more importantly, did not have a drop of hot water the entire time. We complained to management and were told that someone would come from Saigon to fix it. It never happened even though the website and brochure promote solar powered hot water. My biggest beef is that it was not pointed out to us upon arrival, no apology, nothing until we called it to their attention after the first of 6 days of cold showers.

We too asked about going on one of the promoted boat trips. We were told repeatedly that 'maybe later in the week'. It never happened which was a disappointment.

The whole place needs a general tidy/clean up recognising that it is to be a eco-friendly, relaxed resort. We had dinner one night at the newly opened La Veranda resort and we'd prefer Mango Bay any day to this upmarket, over landscaped, over done resort that could be anywhere in the world.

On a more positive note, the food at Mango Bay was consistently good, even excellent. The restaurant atmosphere, staff, menu and food is great. We managed to break away for lunch one day at the nearby Bo Resort where we had a superb lunch. As much as we liked the Mango Bay food, it was good to try some place else and Bo Resort is highly recommended for food.

In sum, the management needs a refresher course in hospitality management and guest relations. The grumpy day manager didn't show any sign of caring about the guests.

This is a nice place to stay ( great beach) - however choose your
accomodation carefully.Pricing not comparable for different accomodation available.

Do not stay in rammed earth bungalows. Some are joined together and you can hear your neighbours very clearly.!! Bunglows 1 and 2 are not only joined together but also next to the service road. The noise of motorbikes starts at 5.00am each day.
The manager was not concerend when I complained about the noise - I was told you booked rammed earth bunglow this is what you have got. Mango bay website makes it look like you will have a sea view. Careful you wont. We over looked a broken down lorry for two days.

The best accomodation is verandah bunglows 60$ a night. Numbers 24, 25 and 26 have sea views. I know this as we eventually got moved to a verandah bunglow after three nights of poor sleep. No apology from the management and he made it quite clear we would have to pay full rate for the verandah bunglow. We were really made to feel like they could not care less about our stay.

The food is v. good and the rest of the staff are very helpful especially the Restaurant Manager/supervisor. This is the guy to see if you want anything arranging .The resort manager appears stressed out and unable to cope with the room allocations and the number of guests dept. and arriving. We asked the manager if we could go on the Mango Bay boat trip he never got back to us. He is rude and very arrogant and this is not just my opinion other guests we spoke to also felt the same. Get rid of him and the place would be much better.

I would recommend the Bo resort [--]. We went here for lunch and the food was the best we had in Vietnam. The owners introduced themselves to us, and made us feel very welcome. The place is not as modern as Mango Bay - but the welcome makes up for that.

Other quick notes on Mango Bay.

Dont get your washing done here - it does not come back smelling clean.

Bedding and towels are clean but have soiled marks on them. Also the pillows smell - need replacing.

A couple who where staying in a Fishermans hut said they had Mice!!!!

Also booking in advance and getting an email from Mango Bay saying we will reserve the best bunglow for you is no guarantee - we ended up with the worst.

This place could be brilliant but needs to be in the right hands and at present it is run by an incompetent Manager who really need to sort things out if they want to get repeat bookings.
