“Chen Sea, Phuoc”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

A truly relaxing and stylish hotel which even when full with about 100 guests has a distinctly un-crowded feel. All the staff are delightful and discreet. The villa we had facing immediately onto the wonderful beach was very comfortable. There is a well- sited and beautiful infinity pool. The restaurant provides a wide range of excellent food throughout the day with an extensive, albeit inevitably pricey, wine list. Olivier, the general manager, is an accomplished hotelier who has a fine eye for detail and is always on hand to give advice and to ensure that his guests want for nothing. He is ably assisted by the knowledgeable Eric who is something of a bon viveur. Of all the beach hotels we have stayed in around the world this one ranks in the top three. In short, it is a terrific place to unwind and we really enjoyed our four days here. For a change of scene at the far end of the beach adjoining the hotel are two local, small, family-run cafes the furthest of which run by Tywe and John provided us with a delicious light lunch.

Dear Vic2ria77,

Thank you so much for your lovely and so positive review about the Chen Sea.
Eric a bon viveur, ohhh yes indeed that is the least that we can say. He is having so much fun with our Guests, though some do not like his style or neither is very hands-on management of our Operations. But this is how we are progressing. Between the two of us we have 70 years of experience, and we still managed to be surprised (just a bit from time to time).

You are so right about our Beach, it is just plain superb. Nowadays being on a Beach and not bugged by beach hawkers is supposed to be the ultimate experience and exclusivity.

Renewing our thanks.

With kind regards,
Olivier, your GM at the Chen Sea Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection.

We had a wonderful stay at Chen Sea. Thankfully, we were there for 6 nights. Tuan greeted us at the airport on time, with a bottle of ice cold water. He was so friendly and professional,we immediately felt comfortable. We drove through the Long Beach area and the town on Duong Dong as we made our way North to the resort. Long Beach was far too crowded and chaotic for our taste so being a bit disconnected from town was perfect for us. We pulled up and we were greeted with tea on the patio and escorted to our beautiful beach bungalow. The design of the room was very cool. The bathroom was gorgeous with a beautiful outdoor rain shower attached. The bungalow had all of the amenities which included high quality shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shaving cream/razor, cotton swabs, a sewing kit...all a person could possibly need and then some. The bed was very comfortable. I prefer a firm bed so it was perfect for us. There is a large walk in closet to keep clothing, etc. Our bungalow had a deck facing the ocean with a soaking bath, comfortable furniture and lounge chairs in the yard. We loved waking up to the sound of the ocean and watching the stunning sun sets every evening. At Chen Sea, it is whatever you want it to be. That's what we loved about it. I had two great massages at the spa by Hahn and Thuan (not sure if I spelled her name correctly), we went in to town 2 nights to go to the market and feast on some traditional Vietnamese food along with local seafood. We had lunch every day by the pool or at the beach and dinner at the resort several evenings. We are pretty picky about our food and we thought that the quality was excellent. There is a nice mix of Western and Vietnamese dishes on the menu. We ordered a bottle of red wine at dinner on our last evening and I was thrilled that it was served properly (a lovely cool temperature). As far as prices are concerned, I think that the ambience and service at this resort should be considered. It is immaculately clean, surrounded by natural beauty and there is always someone close by to assist with your every need. I loved the stories that they placed on the bed each evening and the oil lamp that was lit when they turned down the bed. Olivier, the GM, was welcoming and gave us some nice dining suggestions for our last leg of the trip in Saigon. It is clear that he takes great pride in Chen Sea. We utilized the clay tennis courts a few times during our visit and when we arrived there were ice cold towels and bottled water waiting for us...much needed in the extreme heat. We also used the bikes that were free to us through the resort. The bikes were high quality and several mornings we were able to get up and ride for a few hours on the main road going North. There is a place to rent motorbikes outside of the resort. It is not affiliated with the resort but it only takes a minute to walk there. Be careful as we were taken for about $75 USD extra as the woman claimed we damaged the bike (she had a translator on the phone and told him that we were in a bad accident when what she was looking at were a few small scratches on the side of the bike). Clearly we hadn't been in any accident as we weren't hurt and there was nothing wrong with the bike. She tried to take us for $150 USD so my husband negotiated less and just paid her as we were exhausted and didn't want any trouble. Funny that the following day we saw the same bike parked at Chen Sea, having been rented by someone else at the resort. Again, this place is not a part of the resort but I think it's important to note that this could happen to you. The resort isn't all that far from other parts of the island. We took the motorbikes up North to explore the beaches one day. The beaches are very nice and it's a great way to see the local villages. Our stay at Chen Sea was dreamy, nothing less. The staff are incredible and their English was pretty good. I commend them on their attention to detail and service and we thank you for a delightful experience. It was exactly what we had hoped for.

Dear Steph M,

Thank you so much and we are so pleased to have matched your expectations and that your experience of the Chen Sea was a great one.

Yes I have a sense of pride running the Chen Sea. What I said once here is that being a Hotelier for the past 40 years, and despite some Guests explaining in this Forum that the property is poorly managed, I know how we progress. I know that in a difficult environment we are able to satisfy our Guests more and more. In our analysis of our Guests Comments of January this year, and for the first time, the overall satisfaction went well above the 95%. As usual so many point to improve, but we are on the right track. In this situation a Hotelier who loves his job, and his office, can only be proud of managing his property.

I loved your comments on the motorbikes… For once it is not coming from me, smile. I am so sorry for you that you had this side of the story, but yes it happens often. I also hope that our readers will take this into consideration before renting a bike!!!

With our most sincere thanks and our kindest regards,

Olivier, your GM at the Chen Sea Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection.

We decided to treat ourselves to a 3 night stay at Chen Sea at the end of our holiday and it was the perfect end to our trip. We were thrilled to be offered a free upgrade (thank you!) and we had a beautiful villa with private pool to ourselves. The staff are friendly and discreet, the rooms are wonderful, and the pool, beach and sunsets were amazing. We took out the sea kyaks one morning, and also had a blissful sea-front massage.

The restaurant serves good but rather Westernised food (at Western prices). If you want to eat Vietnamese (at Vietnamese prices) then turn left along the beach and go to the second hut - 'Twees House'. Twee is adorable, the food is delicious, and if you order in advance she will go to the market and buy whatever you want to eat that evening. She can also organise a boat into town to go to the night market (great for cheap, fresh sea food but not worth it for shopping as it is very tacky). DO NOT go to the first hut - they are not half as friendly and the food is less good but more expensive! Twee's English husband is an interesting guy to talk to, too.

Thank you again to everyone at Chen Sea for a wonderful stay.

Dear fbparis,

What is the most important is that you loved your stay at the Chen Sea and we are so glad and thankful for your nice words.

Now when it comes to your advice on Vietnamese food, I have difficulties to get it.

It is not that the 2 little restaurants are squatters on our land, it is not that you see a difference while they belong to the same family, it is not that the so adorable lady broke a bottle on her husband’s head, it is more that should you wish Vietnamese food, in a Vietnamese countryside hut style restaurant, five minutes away from us by bicycle, Sakura is well above. Hygiene wise it is as well less risky. When I see the work we do to maintain international standards of hygiene and the daily fight it represents, and that this is wasted because our Guests go next door, I am a bit confused to say the least.

One day we shall claim our land back, and in the meantime, be prudent.

Kind regards,
Olivier, your GM at the Chen Sea Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection.

After much deliberation on where to spend the first few days of our Honeymoon we chose Chen Sea and were very glad that we did!

Was the perfect start to an awesome trip, where we wanted a few days to completely unwind and relax. It is away from the main part of town and quite a unique trip in if you do get cabin fever.

We stayed 4 nights which was perfect, by the 3rd day we did some exploring but outside of this used the Infinity pool, free kayak hire and loved sitting in the beach bar enjoying happy hour.

Our room had the outdoor jacuzzi which we didn't really use but the rooms are incrediblely large with both an indoor and outdoor shower.

The staff are awesome and you have to try the Green Mango salad - 1 of the top 5 dishes we ate in Vietnam we pretty much had it once or twice a day!!

The food prices are more expensive than you will find in town, but it is of excellent quality.

All in all would highly recommend for people who are looking to relax in total paradise, if you are looking to do activities and explore the town I would look for something closer.

As a side note, the hotel is only 1-2km from Sakura which you HAVE to visit - another positive!

Dear ChrisFraser,

We love Honeymooners… We are so glad that you loved to stay with us.
The Jacuzzi room are just large, not incrediblely large, smile… Come on it’s only a 100 SqM2!!!
But true I entrust that it is the right room to start a Honeymoon.

Yes indeed, to relax in Paradise, this is us, this is the experience that all can enjoy here.

We also appreciate your nice comments on our Restaurant, even if of course you enjoyed eating elsewhere.

We are not expecting our Guests to have all their meals with us, only Repeaters do so.
But to appreciate what we are offering as part of all the possibilities that the Island proposes is a must.

Please accept our renewed thanks and kind regards,

Olivier, your GM at the Chen Sea Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection.

We stsyed at Chen Sea as part of our private tour, organized for us by the amazing Kata at IndoChina Pioneer. Our general level hotels was 3-4 star, which on Phu Quoc was not Chen Sea. After doing some checking we decided it was the perfect spot in our itinerary to 'up the ante' a bit as far as comfort and amenities go, and we decided on Chen Sea.

The experience begins with the delicious ginger & lemon grass iced tea on arrival, on the patio. Christian then escorted us to our spa suite. (upgrade!) it's hard to describe the level of detail in these suites/cottages. There are 6 of them that we're transported from Hoi An. There was an outdoor shower, as well as spa pool, all wonderfully private. The shampoos and lotions were wonderfully fragrant.
The bed was so comfortable and the down pillows perfect.

The resort is very well managed by Mr. Olivier. The staff excellent all over the resort. We ate a la carte every night, and on our last night the chef made us (on request) a delicious chicken coconut curry. (wasn't on the menu)
The resort at full capacity only has about 90 guests I believe, so it feels wonderfully uncrowded.

We were sorry to leave and contine our tour at the end.

If I had one request to make, it is that the bathroom had a makeup/ magnifying mirror for women!

Room Tip: They all seemed gret!

Dear Yorkielassincanada,

Thank you so much. What you say is so great.

You loved your experiencing of the Chen Sea and there is nothing else that we wish more.

I loved your comments on the magnifying mirror; I am going to send this to our Owners.
Then I’ll tell them, it is you, not coming from me. You are so right.

Another detail that our Guests Lady asked for, it is the full length mirror.
I heard, I am not sure, that you love to look at yourself before stepping out from your room…
Let me work on that, and I’ll do my best to get it.

With our renewed thanks and kind regards,

Olivier, your GM at the Chen Sea Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection.

A beautiful end to our trip in Vietnam. The pick up from the airport was smooth and very friendly as was the welcome drink and service upon our arrival. The rooms well exceeded our expectations and were clean and filled with plenty of toiletries and little goodies that we hardly needed our own! During the night time, they come to lower the curtains, dim the lights, burn some scented oil and leave chocolates and a Vietnamese story. Our room also had a reasonable sea view, despite not even being a seafront villa and it was beautiful to wake up to the sound of th ocean. So pampered. All the staff at breakfast and dinner were incredibly delightful, even remembering our favorite drinks and orders, particularly Rosiara (sorry for the spelling) at breakfast who was wonderful. The food generally was ok, but it wasn't always consistently good. The real problem wasn't taste but perhaps being dry or over cooked. Nonetheless, we had some delicious gnocchi as well as prawns with coconut and the local fish sauce at dinner which were really yum. Whilst the prices are a little more than some restaurants you might find in town, by resort standards its not too bad at all. Staff were also very attentive throughout the resort, offering drinks, snacks and cool towels at the pool and the beach frequently. Their english was generally very good too. Both pool and beach are immaculately kept, particularly having been to other beachfronts where rubbish can be a little problem. it's also very private.

The massage and spa part is also very friendly and offers a reasonable variety of things to do. Almost all of which involves a sea view which is pretty great!

Being that the resort is a 15-20minute or so drive from duong dong centre, the taxi costs about $20usd return. If one thing at chen sea could be changed it might be the addition of a shuttle bus to and from town, even at a small cost to passangers could be worth while as the transfer to and from the airport is already so wonderful (the man who took us to the airport wheeled our bags through and even checked us in to our flights!). Despite this, the staff are very willing to call a taxi for you and the trip into town means you get a peak at the less touristy parts of the town on your way in which is worth a look as the island is in the process of much development. I'm glad we had an opportunity to stay here and see this wonderful place beforehand.

Overall, a great place to stay that is clean, private, incredibly friendly and attentive and filled with many opportunities to pamper yourself. We would definitely return to Chen sea.

Dear emilyb101,

You promised to share your feel about the property and you did.
We thank you for doing it and we thank you for your very nice words.
We are pleased that the whole family enjoyed experiencing the Chen Sea.

Yes indeed we still have few things to correct and Guests Comments help us tremendously.

And do not worry about the development of Phu Quoc as Chen Sea is becoming a destination by its own.
Like I often say: “No matter what is thrown on this Island, “Little Paradise” will always remain the most exclusive and peaceful spot on the Island”.

We really hope to welcome you all again.

Warm thanks and kindest regards,

We had the Pool Villa and I still cant believe how good the value was. The service was excellant and extremely personal as you would hope (but dont always get) given this extremely private resort. I would not have been able to take my 17 year old there as he likes people around him but I was in dire need of a holiday and I wasnt disappointed. The Villa was the equal to everywhere I have stayed in Asia and the view every morning was breathtaking. I read with interest the discussion about cost but if you have to take a second look at the prices then you truly dont understand your surroundings and the food was fantastic. It is cheaper than anything in Bali for the same quality. The lounge (sunset bar) is beautiful, the staff talk as good English as anyone in the region (and much better than my Vietnamese). Olivier is engaging and can always be found in the lobby (he even gave me his charger for the week when I had lost mine in Saigon). I wont only be back, I will back going back this year. What a lovely resort, what a lovely island and the people are superb

Dear Traveller44_13,

Thank you so much, your review is just superb. We are so happy that you loved it.
I thank you of course as well for your comments on our pricing, as you express the opinion of experienced travelers.

And of course we shall be so happy to welcome you again. Today is a great day because you just stayed a while ago and you want to come back, and then this morning I had an email from another Guest from UK who was here last month, probably around your staying time, and he is booking for next end of the year.

So gentle reminder as our dear Guests have only one rule to respect: “You come back, or if you send friends, you call on your GM”. Then I facilitate everything.

With our renewed thanks and kindest regards,
