“Just dived from here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

I used matahari dive resort to dive the wreck as they were the best value i found on the internet and effecient with super divemasters, mine was called poo2 and he showed me loads of nudibranches and seahorses. the second dive was to the drop off on the east of the dive wreck. brought my own kit, resort equipment look ok. looked like several resorts sent their customers to dive from here. Left their details with the new resort i stayed in as i would recomment this dive shop.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights. Of course, we wanted to do the famous Liberty Wreck diving while staying at a reasonable accommodation. Out of all the beach-front accommodations with diving service in Tulamben when we searched, Matahari offered the lowest price for their economy room. If you are ok without AC, mosquito net and a nice bathroom, the economy room really is a great deal. However, we couldn't sleep on the first night in this room. It was hot so we turned the fan on which made a lot of noise. The bathroom was small, dark and smelly. Since we both really need good sleep before diving, we decided to upgrade our room to the deluxe...for about $20 more, it made such a difference. If you are looking for comfort, we recommend the deluxe room. We do like the fact that they cater for different budget. As far as diving and other services at the hotel, we were more than satisfied. You can have a very private dive with the local guides there. We went with Nengah without knowing that he is specialized in macro diving. We saw the smallest creatures underwater with him...he took his time to show us the details of macro creatures and it was simply an amazing experience!! After diving, we had lunch and dinner at the hotel (breakfast was included in our room) talking to the staff and other guests. This place provides really nice friendly atmosphere for everyone. They offer variety of menu from traditional Indonesian food, seafood to western food. They are not fancy but all very tasty. Also, a bottle of wine is offered at a reasonable price compare to other places we've stayed before. We enjoyed our wine and food listening to the ocean wave every night. We look forward to going back there!!

Room Tip: Avoid the non AC room if you are noise sensitive...the fan makes hell of a noise!! When you dive, r...

After much internet searching I decided to go with this dive operater, and we were extremely pleased with the whole experience. They offer a number of packages for those who are a bit time poor, with all meals, dives, equiptment and accommodation included, at a very competitive price. Included in this is pickup from anywhere in Bali, we were picked up and delivered back to Ubud with a lovely and informative driver, who took care to explain various highlights about the 2 hour trip.
The dive master was excellent, and we had him to ourselves the whole time. He was very professional, and helped my girlfriend re enter the dive scene after 20 years of non diving, very gentle and supportive to her. he paid close attention to us under the water, and found lots of macro goodies for us to look at.
We upgraded to the deluxe family accommodation for a few dollars more, which was very worthwhile- the regular bungalows are very clean and perfectly fine, but for an extra $10 or so you get a two story , very private residence with a balcony and a lovely courtyard.
The diving was spectacular, and there are porters to carry the heavy equiptment for you when it is a short walk down the beach to entry. The food was basic, but nice, and everyone was very friendly and accommodating. This place seems to cater for the serious diver, we met people from all over the world in the short time we were there, however, you always have your own divemaster so you are never herded around in big groups. I highly recommend this resort, it is an economically sensible way to spend time underwater in one of the most beautiful dive spots in Bali. They offer unlimited shore dives with the package,, but for a casual diver like myself, 3-4 dives a day is about all I want, and the package deal took all pressure off, you could dive when and where you wanted.

Room Tip: Go for the family bungalow, or they have a delux villa which was already occupied when we were there...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

I stayed a total of about 20 days during december in 3 broken trips. I stayed in all the classes of rooms other than the non AC one, and all were more than adequate despite some quirks. Having viewed all the hotels in tulamben, Matahari really offers great value for the cost: On the beach with a short walk to the wreck (porters carry your gear and tank), wifi in restaurant and in the rooms, lovely friendly staff, clean rooms and a divemaster with eyes like a microscope.

If you are into macro, Nengah is the divemaster for you! The fella has an uncanny knack for finding stuff smaller than a fingernail clipping! I did about 25 dives with him and had a brilliant time. Photographers paradise with both macro and a nice novice wreck to play around in. Dive centre staff try very hard to please and will arrange dive times to suit YOU, not the other way around. Bring hard soled booties if you have them as the beach is rocks and can be a bit of a challenge at times.

The girl Nengah who does massage is also fantastic. She is top 5 of my best massages ever, with very strong hands and a knack for finding those sore spots.

I will admit the food can be hit and miss at times but on the whole is is good. Breakfast is very nice! For lunch/dinner seafood combo, cap cay, and pork schnitzel are my favorites. Staff in the restaurant are a lovely group and will try hard to please you. Some do not have the best english, but from what I understand the hotel has taken a chance on local people and is training them, instead of importing those with money to attend the tourism schools.

To those that complained that the rooms were not cleaned - like many hotels in Bali, each room only has one key and you must hand the key into reception or restaurant so they have access to clean it. I didn't have any trouble with it as the house-persons literally chased me down in the morning for my key so they could make my room up.

We stayed here for 1 night and got a double room on the 2nd floor as part of our snorkeling & diving package.

The room is big enough for 2 ppl to move around and beds are OK, however room needs more cleaning and (especially) toilet needs scrubbing. Dusty, dated furniture and stained walls.

However food was excellent - authentic, tasty & cheap. Service is great and the staffs are trustworthy - we left our belongings with them before check-in as we had to stick with the diving schedule & all went fine.

We stayed there for 3 days. We understood pretty quickly though that we were not the most wanted guests since we were not diving. We were also charged more on our first night, as there was an undeserved commission given to our driver by the hotel (undeserved because we asked him to take us to the hotel). Anyway, we had a pleasant stay. Our room was convenient, the snorkeling was good.
