“Little Gem of a Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2012

If you travel a lot and like to save on accommodation by staying in clean comfy 3 star hotels, quiet but fairly central to everything, then Bali Ayu is a little gem. Don't bother upgrading to a villa or superior room, there's barely any difference to a deluxe. The deluxe has a pretty outdoor bathroom (try to get a downstairs room for a better outdoor effect), a spacious interior, tv and airconditioner. The restaurant/sports bar has an excellent chef, the breakfast menu may not be full but has plenty to choose from and room service is also available.

There may have been some hiccups with check in, the safe may not work, the padlocks on the room doors were a bit of a surprise but the staff were honest, friendly and helpful. We made some good friends this trip as our family of 15 (from 3yo nephew through to 64yo Nan) stayed at Bali Ayu for 16 days and never considered changing hotels. Teenagers were happy with free wifi at reception, pool, dvd players, menu choices and pool table and the littlies had access to a shallow paddle pool.

Would recommend it to friends who don't need 5 star accommodation.

Room Tip: Don't bother upgrading to a villa or superior room, there's barely any difference to a delux...

Close to the beach, a couple of pools and a decent breakfast. The rooms are basic but generally clean.

I booked this hotel through a hotel site and saw nice photos of the newly renovated rooms labeled 'Guest room.' When we got there though, we saw that our room was basic, and didn't even have a shower curtain so that when you shower, the toilet bowl gets wet too. It has a good location though, near many shops and restaurants in Seminyak. We went around the property and saw the nice villas though, so maybe you should book that to avoid disappointment.

Room Tip: choose the villas

The hotel is in a pretty central location to Seminyak, Legian, and lots of local restaurants and shops. Potato Heads is just down the road. The bar and restaurant at the hotel were quiet but have a good feel. It's a sports bar, great for Aussie travelers looking for footy or cricket on TV. I was a bit worried about security in the hotel. It is so spread out with rooms far from the entrance and security staff.

The Superior room itself wasn't spectacular. The plumbing was poor and had to call for help with the toilet. There is an outside cooking area with a large fridge and terrace seating (at least on the second floor rooms). We stayed in a newly built Standard room another two days, and thought it was better than the Superior. A major perk of the hotel is the cable TV. If you are looking to laze around for a day, the TV channels are great. The breakfast was inedible on the second day, but the coffee is actually pretty good. There is a 24-hour convenience store that sells cheap Bintang for good pre-drinks. Pretty far from the beach, but close to the shops.

Room Tip: There is some construction going on at the hotel. Ask for a new room. The Standards were at the back...

I have stayed at this hotel now 8 times. I love it. I will be spending my 9 th visit there to. The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They are fantastic and help full. The breakfast is ok but I'm not normally up early enough to get it. However there are some really nice restaurants close by that do all day breakfast. The other meals from the fusion restaurant are great. My favorite is the surf and turf. It's out of the hustle and bustle of kuta so it's nice and peaceful. But if you want to get into kuta it won't take very long via taxi. I think for what you pay you get a great spacious room with everything you need you even have your own little garden. I love this hotel and recomend to any one who wants a relaxing holiday.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2011

I stayed here for 4 nights in total in November - the first trip lasted 3 nights and the second for 1 night. I booked on wotif for a deluxe room US$70net. On first impression, I thought it was good value - nice doors and furnishings, cute entrance to the room, I had a large bed, unique outdoor bathroom, huge room. But a few things really tainted my stay here and hence the bad rating:
1. Consistently dirty towels. I had to request for clean towels twice as the ones that were 'new' in the room had brown stains all over them. When asked, they were not apologetic and I think they are quite aware that they are dirty. Interestingly, they claim that they pride themselves with providing fluffy white towels!
2. Construction work that was going on in the surrounding villas meant that they could see into the outdoor bathroom. It was not until I was preparing to shower that I realised that the construction workers could see right through. The hotel staff claimed that they did not know they would be on the room, at first asking if it's ok for me to wait until 5pm (at that time it was 1pm) and then said it would take another half an hour. We then insisted on them changing the rooms, along with the towels. It was only at 10pm that they decided to be apologetic and offered me a complimentary pizza.

Pros:
Location - in a quieter area of Seminyak but taxis are cheap that everything is accessible. There are some lovely (but more expensive) restaurants around.

Only stay here if you're desperate.

Stayed at this hotel for 8 nights in November with friends, had a villa which upon arrival was clean and seemed good for the price, however the loonger you stay the less you expect. The aircon did not work in one of the rooms, the safe was broken in the other, room service did not come every day, the pool broke and we had rodents running around. This was far from a perfect place to stay for myself and friends. Be pre warned that the between the dogs and the roosters you will not get much sleep.
