What can you say about Red Drum - except it surpasses all my expectations!!!!!
To be honest I had no idea what African Caribbean food consisted of and I was a bit apprehensive at first. Also I am on a bit of a health kick at the moment and was cautious about splashing out on alot of calories and fried food (which I thought it would be). But it was totally the opposite - everything was fresh, light and exotic.
I actually live and work in Bali, so I am familiar with many of the restaurants here on the island and I have a few places I love to keep coming back to and take friends to when they are in town. Red Drum will definitely be the top of my list, as it is so unique that there is nothing like it.
To start off with - the decor is absolutely stunning. The combination of colours and textures is truly inspirational and I definitely felt like I was not in Bali. Basically you have to go there and then you will see what I mean - I would love to be that creative and come up with a concept like they have.........
Secondly the food was fresh, light, well priced and felt like my old favourites - but with a twist. An example is the calamari that was cooked to perfection - yes I have had calamari before, but the sauce was truly unique and amazing. I was fortunate to go there with a few friends and because we couldn't decide what to have, we ordered several plates and shared them in the middle. Great idea, as I then could sample most of the menu items.
Some of my other favourites were the lamb shanks, lentil salad, curry chicken and the best gluten free orange/lemon cake I have ever had (but I had to make the cake for take away as I was soooo full from the dinner - ha ha)
Lastly the service was flawless and the staff went out of their way to ensure we had a memorable experience. The bar staff were even gracious enough to make myself a cocktail that wasn't even on the menu - as in Bali you generally find that if it isn't listed - then don't ask for it.
We were there on a weeknight - but I was told that Red Drum have African Music nights on the weekends with live drummers and musicians - I can't wait to come back again and kick up my heels.
