“Probably the best restaurant food we have ever had”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013 via mobile

This place is superb. Leaving aside the items on the a la carte menu, the appetisers and the amuse bouche were amazingly creative and delicious - especially the egglet with the calamari. Where to start with our meals. For entree, we had the tiger prawn macchiato and the fois gras. Both amazing - especially the tiger prawn macchiato which was served in a coffee cup. Mains were the duck breast and lamb - perfectly cooked and presented. Desserts were the chocolate cake (divine) and the banana soufflé (just a tad underdone - but still great). Wine list extensive and not unreasonable prices. Killer martinis! Great atmosphere although the tables were just a little too close together ( but that's being very picky). Great attentive service but, as the menu is not exactly descriptive of what a dish is or consists of, you tend to rely on your waiter to fill in the blanks. And here it would be great if there were better English skills. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. Not cheap but when you consider the value proposition, it is great value for money. Do not let an opportunity to try this gem of a restaurant pass you by.

“Big City Dining on the Island; gluten free options!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

The closest Bali has yet to very high-end dining. Unlike Ku De Ta, Mamasan & co Teatro showcases the work of a true master chef who expects you to experience food - HIS way.

Skipping past the degustation menus, Mrs A and I picked a la carte. Staff assisted with gluten free choices for Mrs. Though we chose entree/main were treated to 4 courses of amuse' bouchée which came out predominantly sans gluten. Decor is extraordinary, lighting handled well and the usual 3/4 staff asking about orders etc thankfully missing (finally someone is teaching the Balinese how to run front of house sections). Portions were adequate considering the starters and the protein handled well (wagyu tenderloin for her, grouper for me). Drinks service was competent.

All in all you could have replaced the floor staff with NYers and been on the Upper E Side and felt right at home. It's Big City dining with prices to match. So far, apart from its Seminyak Sq location (not beach front) the only thing Teatro is conceding to its competition is the view.

“diamond in the rough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

small intimate new restaurant operated by Mandif, an accomplished Indonesian master chef and his family. All the freshest international and local favorite contemporary foods served imaginatively. Good attentive quick service, from small display kitchen. Good variety of four price fixed menus and a la carte offerings. We had the wagu beef entree, it was superb. duck and fois gras appetizers, intermezzo and amuse bouche made the value good. Great quality and variety of freshly baked breads. Book reservations, they always seem to be busy, It was full on a Monday evening!

“Good . . but needs a little work.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

A friend and I recently made a dinner visit to this fairly new establishment. Located a few buildings down from Seminyak Square; this small restaurant has just opened in December.

We had a little trouble finding the location, but after calling the restaurant, the host was very helpful in helping us find the exact location.

We had seating in their outdoor area - but this was very hot and the fan that they provided did not provide enough circulation and cool air to make sitting outside comfortable. Try to sit inside if possible - the heat was rather uncomfortable after a couple of hours sitting there.

We started off our dinner ordering some cocktails. The mojito was cool and refreshing, well balance of the mint and rum.

They started us off with a sort of amuse bouche of a dark colored chinese style "pao" and a cassava coated with a black color to imitate the look of charcoal. A little afraid at first - we tried the items and found them to be rather good. A little strange in its presentation as it looked like things that were inedible. Unfortunate for us, the server did not properly explain this to us - which was cause for confusion. The table that later sat next to us got a better explanation and I was then able to understand the concept.

At this point we both ordered the Chef Degustation Menus which came at 8 courses for about 900k RP or 90 dollars US per person.

Overall the degustation menu was presented very nicely - all dishes came in a fairly modern presentation - using minimalistic plating technique. Not so much "Gastronomic" technique as the only real techniques that we could deduce that were used were foams and the use of sous vide. All the dishes were lacking flavor and could have used more seasoning. The best dish of the degustation was the duck course that came with a very nicely cooked piece of foie gras and a saikyo miso sauce.

Dessert was a bit dissapointing - the coconut panna cotta with sago and Jackfruit puree was nothing special. We tried to pre-order their Banana Souffle and Valrhona Chocolate cake - then having to have to wait thirty minutes for it to arrive to the table. Flavors again in the souffle were lacking as the souffle was rather wet and deflated and the green tea ice cream that came with it was not strong enough. The chocolate cake was good though, dark and dense and very good flavored.

Overall a rather nice meal - I would come back and possibly only order Ala Carte. If they can work on their seasoning, I think that the food can be much better.

Service was well - could have been better. The table next to us got better descriptions of the dishes as they got served. Overall though, very friendly and not intrusive.

“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

We had the 5 course regional degustation menu. Highlights were the beetroot soup, fish, sorbet & pannacotta. We're a little disappointed that we were charged for water considering the prices ($200 for food & 4 drinks). Loved the ambience & service.
