“Basic, budget hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2014

I stayed here while the hotel was still quite new. I had stayed in over 30 hostels before this on a long trip through NZ and Oz, so for me it was great as it was a step up from hostels!!

As far as hotels go though, it is extremely basic, but surprisingly has a great spa, which I used 4 times!! I got a great deal last minute and was happy with it as the room was clean, relatively quiet, had decent wifi and tv, and the staff were friendly. The design of the hotel was appealing too.

I never had breakfast here or used the pool. I ate lunch once, but never again! The fish was still raw in the middle. Luckily I didn't get sick. I wasn't in the room much, and didn't find the hotel bar enticing. There's no lobby or area to chill out.

This hotel is missing a lot of basic features (e.g. safe, fridge, hair dryer in room) but it is in a great location and is a good base for using the beach or doing trips around the island.

Not too bad location with it's affordable rate. Rooms with no ventilation and window. Basic amenities like shampoo and shower gel only. Room is small but ok for those who doesn't mind. Breakfast was not too great, just very basic like some local food, fruits and bread but no eggs at all. The only thing that up sad me was they did not pick me up from the airport which already been arrange before my trip. By no choice i have to pay RP 250 000 after negotiation to a cab in the airport. Try to arrange for pick up to avoid slaughter by the cab drivers in the airport.

Room Tip: Try not to get corner room next to allay, can be quite noisy.

We stayed in this hotel for 5 days in Feb 2014. The rooms are considerably clean, aircon and wifi work perfectly. The location is very close to seminyak beach. There are plenty of taxis outside the hotel. The only let down is the restaurant in front of the hotel, the hotel provides coupons for its guests to have breakfast there, but the buffet is limited to bread and butter nd noodles or rice, not many options for vegetarians. But considering the amount of money they charge, its a steal!!

Clean & comfortable are the only good things I can say. On the down side, smallest room rivalled only by Hong Kong. Just enough ants in the room to be annoying. Paper thin bath towels, no soap or shampoo in the dispenser that was in the shower. We were on the second floor and rain came in almost up to the front door. Breakfast that was included in the price was dismal, small quantity of egg or pancake. Coffee. The swimming pool area although nice was undercover and the water was very cold. No fridge in the room.

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in January 2014. I would say this is a best value hotel for the money you are paying.

+Unlike some hotels, it is not located on secluded street. Pretty safe to walk at night.
+Nice smell of fragrance throughout the entire hotel environment
+24 hours taxi service at the front of hotel (I asked reception to call for BlueBird taxi at 3am with no problems)
+GREAT cable TV channels! You have FOX movies, HBO, CNN news (and like 10+ other news channels), French, Japanese, Chinese, Arab, Italian, Korean and Australian channel.
+Bike rental without passport required at the hotel for about 50-60k per day
+The in-house SPA is a MUST because it is cheap and the service is TOP notch quality! (if you been to Phuket, the experience is similar to the Sweet Lemongrass massage)
+5 minutes walk to beach with lots of chill-out bars (think bean bags by the sand) and also candlelit dinner by the street.

-Buffet breakfast lacks variety (2 choice of rice, 1 choice of meat, 1 choice of vegetable, cut fruits, bread, coffee, tea and egg station) but you cannot complain because of the already low price!
-Swimming pool is small but 5 minutes walk from Seminyak beach.
-Doors are thin. You can hear people's footstep and door closing. I had the ultimate experience of a couple quarreling outside the corridor. Called receptionists to ask security to shut them up. :D

Room Tip: People who will die without Wifi, please choose 3rd floor. People who will die without massage, choo...

I stayed at the Grandmas Hotel in September 2013 for 8 days. This is a very nice hotel to stay at, though there are some drawbacks to the hotel. For me the rooms are small, but there are very clean and practical. Everything works in the room. (Which is unusual) . The shower and toilet are very clean. I had a room in the front of the hotel and it gets very noisy from the restaurant playing bloody music at breakfast time. The restaurant is not owned by the hotel, i would not recommend eating there. I had two breakfasts there and everything was cold. Coffee was cold tho tasted ok. Had a hamburger for lunch and yes it was COLD. From then on i did not eat there.
Ok in summary, the hotel is in great location for the beach, bars and restaurants. ( try the Lucky Day Restaurant). Hotel is clean, safe and practical. I would recommend this this hotel for short time stop overs (4 days) young people will love this hotel. The staff are very helpful and as usual have the great Balinese smile. Hope this information is helpful. Oh one more thing there is no fridge in the rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back not the front. This a great modern backpackers hotel.

How ironic that arriving just before Christmas we were told that there was no room at the inn and our booking had mysteriously disappeared. No room for us with Grandma and as the time was about 11pm it was not a great start to the holiday. 2 or 3 receptionists stood by uselessly as we were told 'sorry'. We had the printout of the reservation from booking.com but it was claimed that the reservation had never been received. We were given very little explanation as to what was going to happen but it turned that we should wait and we were going to be transferred to another Grandma's hotel - but all the staff seemed worried about was whether our rate included breakfast or not. I told them I had no idea and didn't really care. Could they offer us a drink in the meantime to keep us happy? A couple of Bintangs perhaps? No.

After being transferred to the second Grandma's we paid in cash for one night (we'd originally booked 3) and were shown to our room - a horrible twin room. We immediately told them that we were leaving. By the time we got to the reception our money was ready and waiting. As it was now about 11.30pm we rang up the Vasanti Seminyak (where we have stayed before) and they had a room so we jumped in a cab and had a great stay there. We should have just booked there in the first place.

I must also mention that the response from booking.com was outstanding when we rang them the next day. It seems that Grandma preferred to take direct bookings during the busy holiday period so they didn't have to pay the commission. If that's the way they wish to run their business that's their prerogative but I would caution other travellers not booking directly to ensure that their reservation is secure during any particularly busy period.

If you do wish to visit Grandma the hotel is indeed very conveniently located for Seminyak Beach. But so are many others - and they may actually bother to save a room for you...
