“Well presented seminyak hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

Had 4 nights at Semara in July 2013 as a short getaway.
Stayed in a superior poolside room in a separate area to the main complex.
Positives -
Relatively new property well presented with spacious room providing all amenities.
Good quality food in restaurants that would appeal to Australian guests seeking range of food, relaxed atmosphere with option of live sports etc but certainly not intrusive.
Exceptional resort Semara Spa.
Above all excellent staff in all areas.
Negatives-
Our room located alongside a lane way that appeared to be the driveway to Potato Head . As a result was noise of vehicles and rowdy partygoers in the lane way late at night. This problem may not be experienced in all rooms.
Quality of bath towels etc below standard for an otherwise very good hotel .

Overall have no hesitation in recommending Semara Seminyak.

Room Tip: Perhaps avoid rooms adjoining Potato Head driveway, but there are very few that would be affected by...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

We stayed at this resort for 7 nights in July, booked online after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and looking at the hotels website.
We arrived very early in the morning at 6.30am and the staff were great allowing us to store our bags securely while we lounged around their pool and used the facilities.
We got into our rooms in the afternoon as they have a late checkout, so if you are checking in early warn them in advance and they should be able to accommodate you.
The casual dining facilities are at the front of the resort on the street front and it can get noisy but the food is simple and economical compared to other resorts. We ate out every night as Potato Head is next door and KuDeTa is down the road, there are many good restaurants in this part of Dempassar.
There are two swimming pools and because the resort is not beach front they are well used. Very cleaned and well maintained with the smaller pool (25m) in a beautiful quiet courtyard for adults only. A note here that you may need to remind the staff that the smaller pool is adults only as they don't enforce it unless reminded. Also there is no notice at the entrance to the pool to remind parents and children.
If you want peace and quiet get a room around this pool (poolside but ensure its this pool).
We had an Executive room in the main block about 30m walk from this pool which was quiet and well air conditioned. Hotel is still relatively new so room furnishing are in good condition and bathrooms are clean and well laid out.
We used the in house spa once for massage and although it was a little more expensive than others outside the standard was higher for both staff and premises.
If you want a full therapeutic massage do request a qualified masseuse or you will get a soft rub down.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet ask for a room down towards the beach end of the property 122 to 130 or...

I was a little worried when my wife booked this place for my birthday trip, because of some of the complaints i read about this Hotel in Tripadvisor. It isn't as flash or as trendy as some places but then you can pay $500 upwards for those. For this price, it was very very good. I will ignore price complaining too as nothing is really expensive in Bali. You pay for what you get too. Semara make it clear about their entry level rooms too and the upgrades being subject to availability. It is why we booked the executive room. So i soon realized after being there for sometime that alot of these complaints i read about were clearly quite petty complaints - those who had issues clearly didn't communicate with the staff very well. We had nothing short of excellent service!! Anytime we had a concern, we patiently asked them to look into it and it was resolved; minor things like internet connection, which was a little patchy and temperamental. We asked the staff to constantly help us with things, ringing places and booking things for us etc. They were always so sweet and very delighted to help us. The Deck staff were great too and watching the State of Origin when we were there showed us how good they were at serving demanding Aussies and NZders! The Deck is a good sports bar with good room service too for the Hotel. However, its not what i call a dining location when there are so many places to try that are just amazing. Needless to say, we stayed on for 2 more days than planned and they moved us into the Superior Pool Side room which was just lovely. Huge bathroom! This is opposite the Presidential Suite and this area has its own pool with less kid noise if this bothers you. Just a stunningly lovely, simple setting. The Executive room we had before this was really good and very spacious albeit less than the Superior room in quality; still, very good. Water drainage was a small issue in the Executive room but it was hardly something to complain about. The main pool is amazing and the staff there fantastic! I don't rem all the guys names but i do remember Mertayasa who couldn't have been more helpful. The grounds guys were very smiley and greeted me everyday. All the families we met raved about the kids club!!! The girls on reception, Puty .. such a wonderful lady... Tittin, always smiling and happy to help. And of course Ankaar i think, he had a smile as wide as a house and always greeted us in Balinese helping us to learn the language. I loved this and i enjoyed every minute of staying here and feeling well looked after. I think the key from all this - treat people well and they will look after you. Expect too much and they will probably do only what they need to until you have gone. When in Bali, you need to wear a smile, try the language a little (as the locals love this) AND most of all, leave your usual attitude and worries at home. Thank You Semara staff, we will be back!

Room Tip: Book the Executive Room or the Superior Pool Side rooms. Very spacious.

It was my first time in Bali. I had always been told that Seminyak was great for it's resort lifestyle and Semara didn't disappoint.
The staff are very friendly and polite. One thing to note is they cant accept tips, so dont bother - it leads to an awkward conversation.
The pool is lovely and the cocktails are delicious. Happy hour is definitely a time to grab a cabana.
The Spa is great! the massages wonderful. I wouldn't bother with a pedi or mani, I'd probably recommend going to BodyWorx instead.
One of the consultants was a bit pushy when it came to suggesting facials trying to up sell infrared treatments, which was annoying. If you want to get your hair done make sure you book in advance as the hair dresser is not onsite and comes in especially - which is a shame when you want a spontaneous blow wave before heading out.
The Location is fabulous, you are next door to PotatoHead across the road from Biku and a stones throw away from eat street, body worx and ku de ta.
It really is a great spot and I would definitely book again.

Room Tip: Poolside can get a bit noisy if there are children playing

Dear Shona,
Thanks for taking the time to review Semara Seminyak. You are correct we really are in the best location in Seminyak. We pay our staff a service charge of 10% of the resorts revenue which is a service/tipping fee. As they are very happy with this additional income they receive they rarely want to take any additional monies from our guests. Thanks for your comments regarding the spa which I have passed onto the Spa Manager. Also we do have a 2nd pool in the quieter Gazebo area at the rear of the resort. You may prefer to try this next time.

Best regards,

Stayed here in feb13 for work . Although not the most luxurious place I've stayed, it certainly is great value for money. Executive rooms are lovely . Pool area nice, quite trendy , and in a great area for eating out, with kudeta , la lucciola, living room, Hu'u and sardine and potato head all close by. Best kids club in Bali on premises with alot of expats using their facilities. Can't fault Semara for the price.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for your comments. Our kids club really is the best in Bali so much so that other new hotels are replicating our concept. The room rates are very competitive compared to other international standard resorts in Seminyak. We are just about to release specials for later in this year so make note if you want to return !!

I stayed at the Semara for one night and overall found the resort to be clean with helpful and friendly staff. The room I stayed in was huge and I got a great price. The decor of the room was fresh and modern with a typical huge Balinese bathtub. I say come to Bali and bring Lush Bath bombs by the bucket load! The pool looked standard although I didn't use it and the Spa had a great reputation and looked really nice. Breakfast was good with the best coffee (latte) I have had the whole time I was in Bali and I'm fussy! Location was great as it is right next to Potato Head Beach Club which is one of the most fabulous places in Seminyak to eat drink or just socialise. Draw backs, no beach access with this hotel despite the fact it is on the beach. Spa closed early I think 9pm which surprised me.

Room Tip: I felt a little nervous on my own on the ground floor.

Dear Amandah,

Thanks for your review but I do need to correct you on one point. Our resort is not on the beach, there is actually another small property infront. Regarding the swimming pool (we actually have two), being that our resort is only 2 years old it is a unique selling point that we have a large 25m pool that gets sun most of the day. Many of the new hotels in Bali are building small pool in a more city style hotel. The 2nd pool is at the rear of the resort in the quieter Gazebo area. The idea being that this provides a more relaxing place for those without children. A 9pm closing time is quite standard for Spa’s in Bali. Glad you liked the coffee !

We only stayed for 1 night but we were satisfied with the place. The pool was beautiful, and the room was clean. We also received a free 20 min back massage which was so nice after all the activities we've done. The front desk was helpful all the time, they had their own money changer when you needed it and the beach was a few min walk from the resort. Yes, the downside is they don't have their own beachfront. It's also near shopping boutiques so perfect for shopping or a nice stroll.

Dear Cass,
Thanks for your review. As in most places in the world beachfront property is becoming very expensive. At Semara we are able to offer reasonable room rates because we are just off the beach and only a 10min walk. We are surrounded by some of Bali’s best shops, bars and restaurants which more than compensates. Thanks for your other nice comments it is always pleasing to hear the staff are doing a good job.
