“A Jewel in Seminyak”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

I decided to shout a friend to Bali and i would have loved to have stayed at the Oberoi but couldnt so i found the Semara. What a lovely surprise - one of the cheaper of the luxury hotels in Seminyak but wow was i pleasantly surprised. We upgraded our room and had a huge room - perfect for 2 friends. 2 pools and a really lively bar/restaraunt/deli. Great food & Beverage. Fabulous location - a very nice day spa that has Miranda Kerrs products. Yoga each morning was amazing. Highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: upgrade one up from the basic room. The basic rooms are very very small. But the next ones up are hu...

Dear Tanslovesholidays,

Thanks for your review. We have purposely made Semara a more price competitive option compared to our other 5 star neighbours such as the Oberoi, Legian Suites and W Hotels. This is not only in regard to the room rate but also our F & B prices at the resort. As mentioned are rooms are large in comparision to many other new Bali hotels (Semara is old 2 years). The Exec Suites also have a separate bath and shower.

Glad you tried the complimentary yoga, I will pass your compliments onto Yuda our instructor.

Good location & has the best kids club in Bali but resort is let down by poor service & unhelpful staff. We did not like the food & thought the deck restaurant was expensive for a noisy street restaurant. (major construction work across the road) Upon arrival ( late at night after long flight & travelling with 2 kids) there was no staff at reception & when somebody finally arrived & checked us in the room had no bedding for our kids - was frustrating start & customer service never really got any better. We had booked through wotif & had various inclusions ( daily 20 minute massage, 2 hours kids club, yoga etc) reception staff then said we could not have these as wotif had made a mistake & was informed offers would not be honoured. By this stage I was over argueing with staff, but it was annoying & I would not stay again. We were informed that the resort had just been sold & was going to close for major expansion including two extra levels.... All staff would lose their jobs & most had already left...sadly this showed...On the plus side, rooms were clean & housekeeping did a great job. Pool area is nice but the tiles are so slippery & dangerous . I watched all the new arriving kids ( and some afults) slip & fall. Staff were well aware of this problem. Apart from the terrific kids club it was very disappointing mainly due to poor customer service. Check out was so frustrating, I seriously needed a holiday after leaving & i would not return to the Semara.

Dear Hamburggirl1,

I will address your points as follows;

• I can assure you that food at The Deck is more reasonably priced than many other hotels in Seminyak
• Kids Club is the best in Bali
• Apologies for the room set up not being correct and I will address with the Front Office Manager
• Yes there was an error regarding booking inclusions. I don’t think you can blame this on the poor service of Semara when it was not our error. You were compensated with a 1 Hour Massage per adult.
• We do have a company interested to purchase our resort but at this time nothing further is finalized.
• There is rubber matting surrounding the pool, walkways and toilet area so I am not sure why persons with wet feet would choose to walk on tiles.

Regards,
Semara Resort & Spa

We had booked 2 inter-connecting Executive Suites for our family stay and were very fortunate to receive a free upgrade on arrival to the Presidential Suite.
The suite was amazing ,huge, exceptionally clean and located at the back of the resort near the quiet pool. So peaceful!
The spa facilities were excellent and not overly expensive considering the quality of the products and the beautiful surroundings. Both my husband and I had fantastic treatments here, but we also went to Bodyworks in Seminyak for a slightly cheaper option to treat our kids too.
We ate breakfast at The Deck each morning. There was a large reasonably priced selection and a good range of choices for the children. The smoothies and juices were a hit with our family too!
We really like the location in Seminyak, out of the 'crazy' in Kuta, but still plenty of shopping and dining options nearby. When in Bali this trip we booked our driver Made for the week. The airport transfer was only IDR 100,000 then we negotiated a rate for the remainder of our stay. This was the best money we spent of our holiday as we had clean reliable transport on call, plus a driver with great rapport with our kids. He also recommended a few restaurants which we will definitely return to (Warisan, Metsi, Bumbu Bali in Nusa Dua). My favourite restaurant in Seminyak is still Biku which is just over the road from the Semara.
Our kids aged 10 and 8 loved the kids club, mainly for the Apple Macs, Wii, etc but they also liked having some down time watching movies in the theater room. Our room rate included 2 hours per child per day. They also had a great time mingling with other children at the main pool. The Gazebos at the end of the pool are fabulous. A great place to chill out while the kids swim and play.
The gym was great. Small but well equipped with good airconditioning.
We would love to return to the Semara and hope the upgrade does not ruin a great resort.

Dear aussiefam 5,

Wow…what a comprehensive review. I am sure the upgrade would have been a great way to start your holiday. Thanks for your comments on the kids club, spa and gym. We believe they are all great selling points of our resort. We purposely included some healthy choices on our menus like the juices and smoothies you mention plus you can also make your own salad and sandwich during lunchtimes.

Good location and nice size room. Quiet and lovely pools.
Felt that they were very focussed on making money and not so interested in making our stay enjoyable ...wanted to charge for a DVD player in the room, breakfast not included.. Overcharge for airport car.

Dear Yvette,

I am sure you can appreciate the hotel industry is very competitive nowadays. At Semara we have decided to offer a cheaper room only rate. Yes, this does mean you have to pay for bfast and dvd players but it also means that you don’t pay for services that you don’t use. In saying that you would have received a Free 20 min Spa Treatment, Free Daily Yoga and Free Wifi which other hotels do not offer. Our strategy may not suit all but the majority of guests are happy.

My husband arranged a surprise romantic getaway at the Semara. We had a pool side room which was a little small but quite adequate. The basin area in the bathroom is very small and there is no where to put your things, however the shower is huge! The resort is well set out in beautiful grounds and we loved the location beside the pool and cabanas as it was very quite for most of our stay. The last two days of our visit, there was an influx of families with small children which made it pretty noisy and for this reason we would choose the other pool area. Spa was lovely and all staff were exceptionally helpful especially at the pool bar. We also had no wifi access in our room so had to go to the front bar but overall we had a fantastic stay and would recommend it for all types of travellers.

Room Tip: Pool side rooms are noisy when the hotel is full of young families

Dear Zimbabwe13,

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at Semara. Poolside are our smallest rooms but guests can upgrade to an 60m2 Exec Suite upon arrival for only USD 40 per night. As per every hotel we do have more families during school holiday times. For next time please let Front Office know if you cannot get WiFi in the room as we can provide routers free of charge on request.

A lovely quiet family resort. Next to potato head was a great place to be. The best of both worlds. Having the "no children pool" was great on days that work on the computer had to be done by the pool.

Like previous reviews, I too booked online without recommendations and held my breath! This hotel delivers in spades. Great location, Huge rooms, friendly staff. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and I can't wait to see what improvements they make to this property during the renovations!!!
I also used the gym - all equipment is as good as any Fitness First here at home too. Which is a great bonus !
