“Great for a mid range place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

As with all marketing, Semara takes a few liberties. It claims to be a resort - which I guess it is. It has a gym, kids club, pool, spa, and restaurant - however my experiences of a 'resort' has always been something with a bit more space.

We'll start with the rooms. Ours was marketed as a 'family suite' which is clearly wasn't. A suite has a bedroom separate to the living area, whereas our room was a (very comfortable) king size bed with two rollaways. We knew this going in so it wasn't a problem, and the balcony was large enough with a day bed that we could use it as a de-facto living room to read books while the kids slept. Nonetheless the room was immaculate and well-equipped - even having universal power sockets so we didn't need travel adaptors - a very nice touch!!! The bathroom was huge, with plenty of space for a two person tub, large shower, and his and hers vanities.

The pool area is great. A 25 meter pool is big enough for recreation, with comfy banana lounges all round and even little huts with daybeds down one end. Food and drink service from the adjacent cafe was prompt and quite cheap. Our kids ordered $3- meals with $1.50 milkshakes The staff were delightful.

The spa was an unexpected surprise. Spacious and classy, the staff were amazing and the prices only slightly higher than you'd find in town or on the beach but in a far more relaxing atmosphere.

The "Deck" restaurant was OK, average food at cheap prices. Hamburgers, fish and chips, nasi goreng and a few others are on the unchanging menu along with soups and desserts.

What really gives this place an advantage is it is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to POTATO HEAD BEACH CLUB!!!!

While the resort itself has no beach access, you can duck out the front and walk down the driveway next door to the beach club which has a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the beach, with great food and cheap drinks in an atmosphere of utter luxury.

You won't find tennis courts, golf greens, and other 'resort' type things at Semara, but we found it very easy to pass five days at this property and were quite happy with what is on offer.

Everyone at this hotel was incredibly friendly and eager to help. They were extremely helpful at the front desk and were ready to assist with anything you needed. The rooms were spotless and modern chic. They also have a really good restaurant attached to the hotel with a large bar and decent buffet breakfast.

Room Tip: If you want total quiet, be sure to not get a pool view room. Kids tend to make a lot of noise.

We stayed for seven nights and were generally very happy with the resort. The Superior Suite room was massive and the balcony very pleasant. However, I wouldn't call this a suite. To me, a suite has to have at least two rooms apart from the bathroom. Also, all the superior suites have connecting doors. While these are useful for some people, they always allow more sound through than a solid wall. I asked to have a room without children in the next room. For part of our stay, there were some children but they weren't too bad.

The staff were extremely helpful. We got caught up in the Air Australia collapse and they did as much as they could to help.

A major issue is the website claim that the hotel is 250m from the beach. While this is technically true, there's a big wall in the way. To actually walk to the beach is about 700m unless you manage to sneak through Potato Head which saves a couple of hundred metres. Another issue was that there were no towel/robe/bathers rails or hooks in the bathroom. The freestanding bath took up a lot of room but rails or hooks could still have been fitted.

The included Spa treatments were magnificent although, if we'd been paying, they were relatively expensive.

The food selection was good, especially the Nasi Campur, although parts of it were cold a couple of times.

We stayed for 7 nights at Semara Spa and resort. The service was fantastic. Extremely friendly, and took care of us really well, The room was clean and modern and met our expectations. We are vegetarians and the staff at the restaurant made sure our preferences were always catered for. The signature massage at the Spa was awesome and I loved every moment of it. The cubby house/kids club was large, clean and beautiful and the staff made us feel secure about leaving our kids safely there. The only possible improvement would be the breakfast menu which did not change much from day to day. A memorable stay for us and one that we enjoyed every moment of.

Just spent five nights at Semara. Really great location, beautiful modern spa, very clean and had friendly staff. Close to great restaurants like Biku (for breakfast) Sarong and Potato Head. Seminyak Square short taxi ride away. Not a great selection to choose from at their restaurant for dinner or lunch, but breakfast is okay.
On the downside their internal communication leaves a lot to be desired, we had trouble communicating we had already paid for cocktails which they said we still owed for. Also I had booked an extra night through an online booking service as my flight had been cancelled and I had asked reception when I arrived if I could stay in the same room when my friend left, as the online booking was for a standard room and we were staying in a poolside room and they said it was okay, but then they came to my room and asked why I hadn't checked out!!!!! If I went again, and I would stay there again, I would have everything confirmed in writing to avoid the hassle.

Room Tip: Get everyting in writing as the internal communication is poor.

Stayed for 7 nights and really liked it. This is a small hotel/resort that makes their guests feel very Welcome and Appreciated.

Location: It was a good location for us but it's not right in the middle of the bar/restaurant strip, within easy walking distance to Biku and Sarong restaurants and both very enjoyable. To walk to Seminyak Square and market it's about 15 min. A taxi ride is less than A$1. Catch a taxi to "Sardine" restaurant for one of the most stunning settings, food excellent.

Staff: Friendly, Helpful and always smiling

Room: Modern, spotless, it was not a huge room but we weren't planning to spend too much time in it and when we did it was perfect. Our room was up 2 stairs and with a landing that had 2 chairs and tables to put a drink/book on. Air conditioned and a ceiling fan. Bed very comfortable, bathrobes, slippers, wardrobe, safe, tv, bar fridge, tea/coffee making facilities. Free wifi.

Bathroom: Modern, large, and a great shower, the only "upgrade" needed would be the bath towels as they are on the thin/worn side

Pool: 25 meter pool, it's not huge but a good size for this hotel, plenty of sun lounges, excellent bar service. They do play music from 9am - 9pm in the pool area, sometimes it would have been nice with no music in the background.

Breakfast: Plenty of choices and served either on the front verandah (facing the street) or indoors in the restaurant

Would happily stay at The Semara again

I have just returned from an 8 night stay at the Semara. This is our third time in the last 7 months at the Semara and we will definitely be back! All of the pictures on the website are exactly how this hotel looks! I cannot fault anything with this resort. We got a great deal on Agoda for the standard of this resort.
All of the rooms are immaculate and we were very lucky upon arrival to be upgraded to a Superior Suite on the ground floor which had THEE most comfortable bed!! The room was beautiful and had a great bathroom with a large free standing bath and an outside area with a day bed. The gardens here are so beautiful to look at and the facitilies from the gym and the classes are of a standard hard to come by. It is also great that the have the lap pool and have lap training in the morning if you want to get a few lengths in before you start your day.
I have travelled around the world and I have to say that the breakfast at Semara could come close to the best that I have ever tried - the homemade hashbrowns and the omelette is a must try!

I notice some pathetic people complaining about this resort below and cannot understand why. I admit that the beach is more than 150m away, but to be honest, if the beach was 2 metres away I still wouldn't go to it! I went there one day, walked across a sewer bridge, looked at the beach and how dirty it was and there was one restaurant about 50 metres back from the beach if you wanted food or drink. Now WHY would you want to go to a dirty beach and have to walk all the way back and forward on the hot sand when you can have pool side service at the Semara in the comfy lounges and not have to move, or worry about paying as you can charge it straight to your room?!
As for the comments that the positive reviews on here are written by staff, I find even more pathetic. I am from the UK staying in Australia and I am not staff and I can 100% agree that all these positive comments are real because they are the exact same as my own!

The part that makes this hotel is the staff - from the Gardeners to the Cleaners, Front of House and Service Staff, they all are so friendlyl and they would put a smile on anyone's face in the morning.

I would definitely stay in this hotel again, for the luxury you get at the price it is is great. If you are too good for your own boots and want 6* resort and nothing less then go pay $550 a night somewhere else if you are mad enough!

If you want to go to the main area of Seminyak, it is only about a 10-15minute walk away, but the Security Guard at the front can get you a taxi and it is only like $1, so definately worth getting that walking in the heat!

Room Tip: Superior Room - Top Floor would have the best view and would get the sun, the bottom you have the ga...
