“Beautiful new small resort.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2011

Semara Resort & Spa in Seminyak is a well designed boutique resort with beautiful rooms, terrific pool areas, relaxing beauty spa and reflective garden areas and excellent restaurant areas. Situated just minutes from the main street in Seminyak, Ku De Ta, Potatohead and my favourite Red Carpet Champagne Bar, Semara works for many reasons. The attention to detail in the rooms the fabrics, furnishings and generosity of space is welcome in a resort hotel. Happy to be going back soon Semara is a new standout.

Arrived at the Semara last week in September. Upon arrival late in the afternoon, the reception guy told us we had been upgraded "free of charge" from a Poolside Room to a Superior Suite... GOOD MOVE! The Poolside rooms are very small.. the Suites are massive and very comfortable, clean and the bathrooms are exceptional (2 basins, free standing bath and big shower tiled from floor to ceiling) - oh, and the 106cm LCD on the wall came in very handy to watch the Singaport Grand prix! We also loved the balcony - ours overlooked the Spa - and it's huge day bed.. We were quickly escorted to our room and given a guided tour, and our luggage followed us closely! First impressions were - "WOW.. this is going to be an awesome week"

Being our first evening, we decided to eat in the Atrium Restaurant at Semara. Unfortunately we were the only diners there so lacked ambience. Although the food was ok, and the service great. Had the place been busier, I think we would have enjoyed it more. Fine dining, so small portions too.

Location. Brilliant. Cannot fault it. Out of the hussle-bussle of mainstream Seminyak, yet less than AU$1 in a taxi to Seminyak square. Within walking distance (5 to 10 minute walk) there are ample restaurants to chose from. Just a couple of brilliant ones that come to mind are Sarong and Biku (Biku is fantastic for lunch or high-tea - best beef pie and chips in the world!). Just a few minutes in a "BlueBird Taxi" to the left of Semara towards Kerobokan there are quite a few top restaurants.. we tried Sardine, Jemme and have been to Metis before.. Sardine is highly recommended. Just a few minutes to the right of Semara, and you are on the main restaurant strip - Ultimo, Chandi, Tratoria, Cafe Bali (nice, cheap Me Goreng), Nirvana etc. and just up from these are all the boutique shops etc.

Next door is Potato Head beach Club - this place is nuts.. go there for a Brandy Alexander and watch the sunset.. nice vibe, good mix of people, great DJ.. but make sure you take plenty of cash!!! Similar kind of place down the road is Ku De Ta... we went a few times.. We had pizza and Bintang on one of their lounges one evening which was beautiful - watching the lit-up waves and listening to the chillout tunes.. 2 equally awesome venues, highly recommended.

Beach is less than a 5 minute walk.. we walked from Semara down the beach to Legian, did some shopping, slipped in a Bintang or two and then taxi back.. beautiful..

In the Semara area itself, just to the left of it there is a Commonwealth Bank ATM inside the Mini Mart (We had our mini bar at the hotel emptied and stocked up daily on bottles of water, beer and diet coke for the Jim Beam!). There's another little handy shop too called Tom's. Taxi's flow constantly along the main road - hotel security usually whistle for them (make sure it's a BlueBird - nicer cars, and on a meter..).

The Semara Resort itself is fantastic. Very chic and clean looking - paths are washed daily.. gardeners constantly plucking weeds and trimming leaves.. The pool area is immaculate - every time someone comes out of the pool, the pool-boys mop up the water after them. Loved the pool - very relaxing and nice temperature. Table service by the pool is superb, and the staff are very friendly, fun and smartly dressed. Sun loungers are comfortable, and towels clean. There was a great vibe around the pool whilst we were there.. we made a few friends. Breakfast is delicious - plenty of choice. Free evening drink at the Atrium is great - we soon realised that most go down there around 8.30, which was great as everyone mingled.

The room-cleaning service we received here made the holiday very special. They guys went out of their way for us. Every morning and most afternoons we received new clean bathroom towels. Every evening around 6.30 our bed was "turned down" (quilt folded down neatly and cushions removed)... very nice, personal touch.

Overall... definitely 5 star luxury.. One thing my wife missed was a full length mirror in our room (which I believe will be installed in the future). If you don't try the place, you are missing out!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in 215 .. Great room.. Just off the far end of the pool area so very peaceful but yet we c...

Hi there,

It's great to hear your positive and happy comments from your stay with us at Semara and in Bali.

You're very welcome for your complimentary upgrade!

For any future travelers coming to stay at Semara, we will soon be expanding Atrium Restaurant and changing the style slightly to cater for more casual diners. We hope that you will be back in the future to experience this exciting new change.

You're absolutely right about the mirrors. We are currently progressing through all of our rooms to fit them with a full length mirror.

We hope we will see you again in the future :)

Regards

Alisa

This is our third trip to bali together and of all our asian holidays - this holiday was by far one of the best and one of the most relaxing we have had.

We normally book large 5 star resorts as we have in the past felt that they offer so much more then smaller resorts so booking Semara was very unusual for us but we woulnd't change a thing and would definately go back in the future.

The hotel is beautifully done - we stayed in a suite as opposed to the poolside rooms and would recommend spending the extra money as the poolside rooms don't appear to offer a huge amount of privacy and the suites are massive with a lovely day bed on the balcony or verandah and the bathrooms have been beautifully fitted out. The bed was amazingly comfortable and probably for the 6 nights we stayed - we slept far too well!!!!

We decided not to have breakfast included and ate at the resort when we felt like it. We never had the buffet so I can't comment but the a-la-carte breakfast menu was beautiful and the food was presented beautifully and tasted the same. Other mornings we ventured out to the Bali Bakery (at Seminyak Square) and to the Grocer's Grind... of which I would defaintely return to the Bali Bakery!

My husband does get a little bored of lying around the pool reading which is why we normally book larger resorts as they have activities like table tennis... the pool was not large in the scheme of things but it was beautiful and the time we did spend by the pool was just perfect and very relaxing.

The staff are very friendly and attentative and the service is in my opinion outstanding. The location is fabulous and is right next door to potato head which we frequented a lot and just down the road from La Luciola (perfect food). It was a fair taxi ride into Kuta due mostly due to the huge traffic delays especially at night time but hey that's Bali!

We are a young couple with no kids and found that this resort was fantastic and would definately think about going back when we go back to Bali.

Room Tip: Suites are larger and offer more privacy then the poolside rooms which are right next to the pool an...

We were a group of four adults, two children and one infant - stayed at this resort in August for four nights

The overall resort has a very new feel to it, and the resort has a high quality of furniture, interiors, fixtures etc - looks very attractive (for example, the furniture in the room or the interiors in the restaurants). Do note the pool area is not particularly large however. With regards to the location - the resort is very close to the key parts of Semara with the wonderful choice of restaurants. Just a 5-10 min cab drive. Not far from Kuta, but obviously entirely dependent on the Bali's crazy traffic jams

But this rather nice resort however is completely let down by management with a poor customer service attitude, as well as staff who while polite & friendly, are terribly inexperienced (most of the staff seemed like they had no experience working in a similar resort).

I will highlight a couple of the major issues that we faced at this resort:

Upon reaching the resort from the airport found out they did not have both of our suites available. I assume they had overbooked - obviously a common practice carried out by airlines & hotels that is understandable due to cancellations. What is however utterly unacceptable is for the establishment that has overbooked to not resolve the matter with minimum inconvenience to the customer - something simple that Semara did not seem to understand. Their 'offer' was to put one of the families in a temporary room for 6-7 hours while they hopefully got us our actual rooms. We refused and insisted that they either accommodated us in the suites we had booked, or that we should upgrade us - it took about an hour of 'negotiating' and arguing with them before they reluctantly agreed to the upgrade!! The resort actually expected the customer to 'put up' with their overbooking rather than provide any kind of suggestions to reduce our inconvenience, despite observing we had three children in the group. Not a great start to your holidays!

Another very important point to highlight - the walk to the beach is NOT 150m as stated on the Semara website. It is a 500m++ walk, and the walk itself is extremely unpleasant including walking over a rickety bridge, with stream with raw sewage flowing underneath! I highlighted this to the deputy general manager when I was finally 'granted' an audience with senior management (more on that below) who actually accepted that the 150m is 'probably' incorrect. Its now well over 6 weeks since we stayed at this resort and they continue to have the 150m claim on their website - very poor indeed that they put up misleading information on the website

After a number of other less major issues we faced at the resort, we had to repeatedly ask to meet the general manager. Finally, we were told she was in a meeting but her deputy GM came down to talk to us on the day we were checking out. Very poor that we had to ask a few times to talk to management. Honestly did not get the feeling this resort cares about customer feedback.

One highly positive note to add - the staff & manager (an Australian gentleman, apologies I forget his name) at the Atrium restaurant were excellent (seemed far more trained than the other staff at the resort). The highlight of our stay here was lunch we had one of the days - A number of us in our group were vegetarian. The Atrium's chef, Sven Landtaler had found out we were vegetarians, proactively came to our table suggested that he could cook up something special for us that would be vegetarian - and the food was absolutely excellent!

So in summary, this is a resort that has good potential but let down by the way it is run. In my view, if you get a really good deal then its perhaps worth considering. But I would definitely not recommend this hotel at premium prices! There is a lot of choice of resorts & accommodation choices in Bali that one can consider

Hi there,

Thank you for your review and we appreciate your thoughts.

In relation to your comments about your rooms, it had been noted your travelling party had chosen interconnecting rooms. As this was unfortunately unavailable, the next best option was to upgrade you into 2 x deluxe suites and these rooms were located next to each other. This was certainly not a case of overbooking or any reluctance in providing this to you. Any unexpected issues that arise, we do aim for a prompt solution. For the delay in getting you to your room, we apologise for the inconvenience.

It is definitely the first time I have heard anyone mention raw sewerage on the beach and I'm pleased to write I have not witnessed this!

It's great to hear you had a wonderful meal in Atrium and our chef has no hesitation in satisfying a guest’s request that is not on the menu.

My apologies for not having being able to meet with you during your stay, but whilst not available, senior managers were happy to assist and resolve your concerns during your stay. We do care about all of our guests needs under any circumstances.

Kind Regards

Alisa

Our family stayed for 12 days at both Semara Seminyak and Uluwatu resorts. I can honestly say it was the best family holiday we have ever had. Fantastic rooms and services, peaceful luxurious surroundings and the most beautiful staff who were happy to assist in any way possible, even if it was to just to start our day with a welcome smile. I utilised the very reasonably priced spa services, particularly the massages which were the best I had ever experienced ( I should know as I am an experienced masseuse). The ginger tea to finish topped the entire experience as well. The gym was very professionally equipped, and Georgies restaurant was the favourite with the kids. Will be back with bells on, thanks so much Semara

My partner and I stayed there for one week in a standard room on the second floor away from the pool area. We would definitely recommend staying there to anyone who wants to stay in a quieter and relaxed hotel.

We arrived late at night and organised transfers through the hotel (at an extra charge but so worth it!) so we were met at the airport by the chauffeur and driven directly to the hotel and escorted to our room very promptly. We ordered room service quite late and it arrived quickly and was delicious! Overall, we found the quality of food to be of a very high standard and as such, on a couple of occasions ate lunch by the pool and had dinner in the Atrium restaurant one evening. We had breakfast included with our room and we found the selection and variety to be of a high standard.

We also had two free massages each included in our room package and the massages were fantastic. We found the staff at Semara to be very friendly and helpful and they regularly provided advice on how to get to places etc.
The location was perfect, walking distance to the beach and well located to the restaurants and bars in Seminyak (15 mins walk) and we hired a motorbike to get around to places such as Kuta and Legian. For AUD $5 dollars a day it was worth the risk of getting pulled up by the Balinese police for not having an International Drivers Licence which we didn’t! We got fined twice and paid a total of AUD $30 which when you hire the bike, should be communicated to you by the hirer of the bike although they seem to forget to mention this although in their defence, it is on the agreement form in small print! The tip here is don’t carry much money (of any currency) in your wallet because the Police will fine you what they can get and pocket it. As long as you’re not a cheeky the Police are friendly enough about it – just act humble.

Our only disappointment was that our internet connection was very unreliable and didn’t work most of the time. The staff did try to assist but to no avail so we didn’t have access to the internet during much of our entire stay which was probably a blessing in disguise! Overall we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Choose suites not too close to the pool
