“Great villas, great location, poor WIFI”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2014

We stayed there for 6 nights (19.07 - 25.07) at the end of our holidays in Bali and it was our first experience in a villa with private pool.

We stayed in one of the Deluxe villas, with private pool, terrace and garden, good sized room and huge bathroom.

Our driver had some troubles to find the villas, because they are not visible from the main street, and there is only a little sign that shows the location.

It might be a good idea to install a greater sign

Positive points:

- Great location (~700 m from the sea) and 100 m from restaurants and bars
- Room extremely clean
- Really quiet
- Nice Balinese decoration and style
- Private pool of respectable size (~6 m long, 2 m wide)
- Bed and pillows are of excellent quality
- Excellent service and lovely staff, special mention for the pool maintenance guy (cannot remember his name unfortunately, he was really lovely and we enjoyed little chitchat every time he came)
- Possibility to have mobile massage on the terrace

In overall, a really good experience, but the following points might be improved:

- Quality of the lock in the villa entrance, we always had to fight to open the door
- WIFI doesn't work good. On the 6 days we spent there, it was out of order half of the time, in 2014 WIFI shouldn't be an issue any more
- The room might need a bit of fresh paint behind the bed
- Every day you have to go the reception before 7pm to order your breakfast, the system might be simplfied by letting the forms in the room
- If you spend the day at the villa to enjoy the pool, you will have every day 3 interruptions: one for the room cleaning, one for the pool maintenance and one for the garden maintenance. If possible it might be nice to try to regroup these interventions

Based on the reviews on tripadvisor with "fantastic" and "amazing" I was hoping we found a new favorite. We didn't. I'm guessing the super positive reviews are coming from first time villa experience visitors - and if that is you (your first villa experience) you may fall into the amazing camp. For us, we tend to stay in the luxury villa space and have pretty high expectations which this Villa didn't quite meet.

The positive:
Location is great - close to the food street and 700m to the beach.
In Deluxe villas (which we opted to stay even give the choice of the Suite) the layout is traditional Balinese Vila with outdoor kitchen and living room - which is right next to the pool. This makes it great to lounge while still outdoors.
Interior is spacious with large comfy bed

The negative:
Service in the villa is poor - housekeeping is spotty and misses many small things - like refilling the mini-bar
The room is a bit dated and the use of the fluorescent lighting gives it an institutional feel (hence why we usually kept the lights off)
Breakfast is horrible - we tried each dish on their menu just to see if we would get lucky with one, but each one of the choices offered was just horrible.
The hotel cannot get wifi working if their life depends on it - every day (for 7 days we stayed) we had to call 3 or 4 times to get wifi in the room working. In the end to get online, in sheer frustration, we ended up heading to the lobby.
Airport pickup - they forgot to pick us up despite me confirm with them 3 hours prior to arrival.
They have a nice big hot tub - but the hot water tank can only fill it up to 1/4 of the height. After calling maintenance they told us that the hot water tank is small and that we should fill in in phases - with 20 minute wait between water fill.
They offer a kettle in the kitchen for tea or cofeee but there is no plugin for the kettle. We had to ask maintenance to run an extension cord to just use the provided kettle.

In the end, we made the best of it, taking bets on how often internet would drop off, setting up a schedule to fill up the hot tub, challenging each other to see how much breakfast we could tolerate (wasn't much - breakfast is really horrible)

So, overall, the villa has no attention to detail, no focus on the customer and overall doesn't try hard and certainly doesn't reach for anything great.

If this is your first villa experience and you don't know any better you could be impressed, but if you have experienced true high end villas you will be frustrated with this property.

Room Tip: Deluxe villas are nice since the kitchen and living are are outside. Suites have the living room in...

Our family of 5 enjoyed our stay here (2 adults + 3 kids aged 15, 13 and 9).

The location was excellent. We had a 3 bedroom villa at the back of the "resort" which was far enough away from the busy main street to relax and enjoy the quiet. A nice 1 minute walk through the villa lane-way and you are right in the middle of everything. Shops, markets and restaurants at your fingertips.
Breakfast was prepared by staff in the outdoor kitchen/dining area each morning and ready at a time we requested and was lovely, hot and diverse.
The rooms were exactly as expected and didn't disappoint - beds were huge and comfy. Bathrooms were great. They are open air but they are private enough and there are mosquito coils provided in each room to keep the mozzies at bay.
Our pool was huge. Over ten metres long and very clean and inviting.
Other reviewers have noted the mouldy smell of their villa. Bali has a hot, humid climate after all and whilst we did notice this (only mild) when we first got there, after a while we didn't and it really wasn't a problem!
There is no sign saying Villa Aya and our driver had a bit of trouble finding it, so he did a bit of running up and down the street to find out where it was! It is now Tjendana Resort villas, which is the sign you will need to look for and is directly across the road from the Greek restaurant, Mykonos (there is a second Tjendana Resort villas sign about 300m further east, so if you don't see Mykonos Restaurant across the road, you are at the wrong one).
Although perhaps a tiny bit overpriced, overall we had a very nice time and I would definitely recommend a stay at Villa Aya.

We loved our stay in these beautiful Villas. The location was great and the staff made us feel very welcomed. We stayed in a 1brm Deluxe Villa for 2 nights and decided extend our stay and moved to a 1brm Suite, both were nice but the Suite was much more modern and luxurious. It is about a 10min walk to the beach and you are surrounded by great shops and restaurant's on your door step. The Villas are located far enough away from the main street, that is was peaceful and relaxing. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: I would go with any Suite Villa 3 - 14 for location within the complex

Fantastic villas! Was slightly worried about travelling by myself but felt safe and secure in villas, really enjoyed having my own pool. Great location, walked around looking at lots of restaurants and places for massages, what more could you want? Food was terrific at adjoining restaurant or delivered to the villa. Staff great. Not too far from airport. Probably the best pillows I have ever had shame I didn't steal one. Looking forward to many more visits.

Room Tip: I was in a villa down the back away from the street. Very quiet, except for the renovation going on...

We love Villa Aya (now re-named Tjendana Resort). It's perfectly located and the staff are delightful and couldn't have been more accommodating. We were in the two bed pool villa (two adults/two young teenagers) and it was perfect for us. In a couple of years, though, I expect our kids will refuse to share a bed, albeit an enormous bed!

The villas probably aren't suitable for families with younger children as the the bedrooms are separate pavilions. This is an older style villa resort and we sincerely hope that it stays that way... we love that it is a little more rustic than most other very slick villas in the area. The layout, the rooms and the gardens are more old style Bali and that suits us.

The villas are down a gang off Jl Kayu Aya (Oberoi/Laksmana) and a quick stroll to Seminyak Square, about a 7 minute walk to Seminyak Beach (through Kudeta) and very handy to restaurants and bars. Loved that we could nip up to Revolver for a great coffee every morning. A special thanks to Kadek, the manager and Kasih who looked after us every day, we can't thank you enough for making our stay such a comfortable one and for solving any problems we had quickly and efficiently.

Room Tip: Villas further down the lane and on the eastern side may be a bit quieter as they don't back ont...
