“Could have stayed here forever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

This was first class! It was a peaceful, relaxing place, spacious and elegant set in beautiful gardens and we wished we'd stayed longer. The breakfasts were beautiful too and the owners most helpful and friendly without being intrusive.

We booked to stay at Rothman Manor for only two days/evenings (in early October) - our mistake;we should have booked to stay longer. This guest house is superb - decor, ambiance, internal and external surroundings. Super hosts, very attentive and not just at breakfast; eg great recommendations for dinner and for other places to visit. We particularly appreciated the breakfasts, the decoration/art work in our room, the pond and the weaver birds, the nearby area of zebra and bontebok and indeed the on site/off road parking. Spend time here, in Swellendam and relax and be reinvigorated.

The most beautiful guest house, in the most beautiful park. Lovely birds, zebra and bok; a great jacuzzi deck, and a nice pool. Fabulous breakfast. By far the best guest house we stayed in all of Sth Africa.

Our bathroom was the best we had in South Africa. Great shower. We had a lovely room with a very comfortable bed overlooking a large pond with Golden Weaver birds. Zebra and Springbok in the lower garden.
Breakfasts were of a very high quality. Service was of the highest order with even our car being washed. We could not have asked for more.
Three good restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Try for one of the two ground floor rooms overlooking the pond and garden.

Rothman Manor is truly a magnificent guest house plus so much more. Our usual guest house (Mardhouw House) had closed to become a private residence and we were so disappointed not to stay there for a fourth time that it was with some trepidation that we arrived at Rothman Manor. Well, we were blown away! Andreas was a delightful host and showed us around with such a sense of pride in what they have achieved here. The room was beautifully appointed with two outside seating areas and a view of the pond which was surrounded with reeds stuffed full of weaver birds! Even my husband took an interest in their antics! We wandered around the lovely gardens and found the eco-park where we looked down on springbok and zebra. The pool area is lovely (unfortunately too cold at this time of year). Franziska and Andreas served a delicious breakfast in the lovely breakfast room with wonderful coffee (made just the way Andreas likes his - strong) and we tore ourselves away to visit The Drotsdy (really interesting social history) and the Bontebonk Park (we only saw them at the end of the drive, having gone round twice!!). Andreas made restaurant bookings for us at La Sosta and Koornlands, the second being my favourite and the first my husband's. What a simply wonderful guest house. A definite return next time in Swellendam.

People asked "Why Swellendam?" When we said we'd been once for lunch and thought it beautiful we knew we'd found friends. If that's Swellendam, Rothman Manor is its essence. We were met by the charming Franziska and shown into the most comfortable suite imaginable, with all that anyone could require - that was until we went into the garden and found the next best thing to Paradise.
Advice on anything we asked was readily available. Naturally we made ourselves coffee from the complimentary machine that was easy to operate once explained. The next night we enjoyed the complimentary port as well. No wonder the place is listed among the best in the Cape. It fully justifies its description and the photos in the book.
On recommendation we ate at the Old Mill and had an excellent meal with meticulous service at ridiculously low cost. The next morning Andreas joined Franziska in serving a delicious breakfast. If you ate all that was available either you'd need no more all day or would have to lie down until the digestive system had finished its work. After an interesting conversation and extra coffee we chose a moderate option and went for a trip to Bontebok National Park. First though we had to visit the eco-garden and the zebra, springbok and bontebok, then tear ourselves away from the busily building weaver birds. It is a place you could spend days or weeks in without ever leaving.
The staff are helpful, and glad to be working for such people. Thanks to them both for a wonderful, all-too-brief stay.

We stayed for two nights, in two adjoining rooms. We were upgraded to suites, which was wonderful - they were huge, with great beds, a comfortable sitting area, a fridge, a TV, a separate luggage/dressing room, and enormous bathrooms. There were small outside terraces with table and chairs but it was too chilly to sit there.

The rooms overlooked the large duckpond and reed beds, and across the rest of the beautiful garden. Strolling round the garden and spotting birds was wonderful, as was relaxing in the jacuzzi and watching the zebras, guinea fowl and springboks in the adjacent field. The pool looked lovely, but we didn't brave it. There is an attractive communal lounge in the main house, with lots of books and magazines, an excellent coffee machine and a flagon of port, all included. There was even an ipad for guests to use, as well as free wifi throughout the property.

Breakfast was a splendid buffet of cheeses, cold meats, cereals, breads, juices, fruits etc, and a freshly cooked hot plate of your choice, plus great tea and coffee. Andreas and Franziska were lovely - friendly and helpful but not overbearing. They gently helped us decide what to do each day, with their local knowledge (invaluable when it came to finding the way onto De Hoop Nature Reserve which is not well-signposted from Swellendam), and suggested where we could eat - we ate dinner at the pizzeria next door one evening, which was excellent.

We absolutely loved it here, a very special place where we felt pampered but not smothered. We'd love to go back.
