“We loved it so much we came back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2010

We checked in late but received a warm welcome, enjoyable dinner and had a lovely evening. Spent the morning taking in the interesting history and headed east but just felt drawn to go back rather than stop somewhere new on our return. Swellendam is just wonderfully slow and relaxed. Our short stays at Roosje van de Kaap were one of the highlights of a wonderful holiday. Its clean and simple...and for short dtay, who needs a television in a place like this?

I would highly recommend this B&B. Really friendly host (though overworked!) and a great B&B. You must eat there one of your meals. We arrived on Christmas day. And the Host made special arrangement for the guests as nothing else was open.

This B&B was a lovely place to stay in Swellendam, which itself was rather uninteresting. The owner was very friendly and the honeymoon suite we stayed in was very charming with exceptional views of the Overberg mountains. We were a bit surprised to find ourselves booked into the restaurant both nights for dinner but on retrospect this was a blessing as the restaurant choices were poor (or already fully booked). The food was very tasty. Breakfasts in particular were fabulous. We recommend the Marloth nature reserve for walks in the Overberg mountains. Bontebok National Park was less interesting. Make sure you go to the Old Gaol house for cake or for lunch as it's really superb. Too bad they are not open for dinner.

This is maybe not the neatest place we've ever been to, but boy were we charmed by this great little country house. The owner Ilzebeth was just a lovely lady, simply born to be a hostess. We were very impressed by her hospitality, charm and entertaining stories.

The restaurant served simple food, but among the tastiest we had on or whole trip. The restaurant is cosy and romantic in a rustic way - we loved it!

We travelled with a one year old and he got a grand welcome from the owner and staff. He was so happy playing with the little dog and running around in the beautiful garden. We stayed in the Honeymoon suite and it was spacious and full of character with great view from balcony. The town Swellendam was quaint and felt very safe.

When I stayed at "Roosje van de Kaap" it's been great. Very nicely decorated room in the garden with mountain-view. The owner tells us about the baboon-free-area (it's save to sleep with open window) which is really nice.

Dinner in the restaurant was delicious - we had the catch of the day (I really enjoyed the sweet potatoes, too) and a pizza, which also was very good. But you shouldn't miss the breakfast at "Roosje van de Kaap" and especially the "famous fruit cocktail". Joghurt, fruits, cereals so beautiful arranged - excellent. You also get the normal stuff like juice, coffee or tea, hot breakfast with all kinds of eggs and of course the welcoming charme of the owner and her staff.

Great stay!

This place is worth to plan your trip around it. We heard from several friends that we had to stay here so I was very curious wat so special was..
The owner Ilzebet makes the place to feel at home and it did! Don't expect to much from the rooms, because they are not so special but the ambiance in Roosje van de Kaap is superp! Just to sit at the pool or on the grass and enjoy..
If you stay at Roosje van de Kaap it's no way of not eating at the restaurant and this is really special. Even a lot of locals come often here because they like it so much!
It's a small, cosy, warm place with great food! Again feels totally perfect and very romantic!

I cannot recommend Roosje van de Kaap highly enough. The place has old world charm and a pleasant pool & is located close to historic sights, restaurants and a national park, but its greatest asset is the owner (Ilizabet) and her general manager. When my partner unexpectedly needed urgent medical attention, they could not have been more helpful - recommending a local doctor, arranging an appointment and even giving us lifts to & from the surgery. That evening we had dinner in the restaurant, which was delicious (try to the bobotie) and served by people that were consummate hosts. We were also given free lifts to & from the Intercape stop, & given free drinks upon arrival.

I have been fortunate enough to visit twenty or so countries over the years, but Roosje van de Kaap is undoubtedly one of the best guest houses I have ever stayed in.
