“One of the best hotels in Somerset West”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2009

Situated in beautiful surroundings and close to four famous Wine Estates. Lourensford Estate, Fleur de Cap, Morgenster and Vergelegen. All worth a visit for wine tasting and experiencing a bygone era of dutch homesteads and antique furniture. The Hotel is at the entrance of the Erinvale Golf Estate.
We had a pub meal in Skelligs and found it to be very sociable, well priced and good value. Staff were very friendly. Our room was very well furnished, however I would request a room on the ground floor rather than in the attic.

I'd like to compliment all of Erinvale employees as well as Blue Bay Services, for the excellent service they provided our group this past weekend. The concierge staff, Mr Baard and Johnwin helped me to sort out and plan other activities quickly when the rain caught us off guard.

I am very pleased with the service I had received at your Estate. Johnwin's professionalism and ability to assist and lend a helping hand so quickly exceeded my expectations.

Such a commitment to great customer service is to be commended. You can be sure that I will continue to do business with Erinvale Estate for years to come.

Erinvale Hotel is a little gem. We have stayed there many times over the last 6 years or so and often use it as a last base before returning to the UK. There are far flashier places to stay but it's overall ambience is just great. Look out for the owls and peacocks living there. Several owls live here and are often seen in the evenings. Peacocks may join you for breakfast or lunch...

This year, it was a pleasant surprise to find that they had renovated many of their rooms and extended the Skellig bar. The latter move is not all good news though as the adjacent outdoor eating area has been reduced, although you can dine out in the courtyard on the other side. The showers haven't been replaced in the refurb but that's because they are superb anyway. They may look old fashioned but put many new hotel showers to shame.

Location wise, it's brilliant. 40 mins drive from Cape Town Waterfront, 10 mins max to the beaches, wonderful golf course next door (although see next para) and near to the stunning Helderberg nature reserve which is just a few minutes away. A tranquil gem with the quaint "Duck Inn" as a starting point and wildlife everywhere. A visit here is a must if you are staying at Erinvale.

Golf. The course is great (the South African Open has been held here on more than one occasion) and in immaculate condition but you MUST book tee times well in advance, via the hotel to get a discount, as a) it's busy all the time and b) security is so tight that they won't even let you in to the pro shop without an appointment. Well worth the effort though.

  • Liked — Location, golf and general ambience
  • Disliked — Nothing really

Stayed here as we attended a wedding on the Vergelegen Wine Estate which is just across the road from this hotel. For that the location was perfect and the wedding on the Wine estate something we will never forget.

Hotel is certainly not 4* as it is rated to our minds and is best described as average 3*- rooms are reasonable, spacious and clean, bathrooms seemed dated. The rooms are in buildings around a courtyard, some with thatch roofs. Our rooms didnot have the thatch (thankfully) as friends had some water ingress during a v. heavy rainstorm. This may have led to the slightly musty feel of the whole place.

Although they have two pools and a spa, these are very small around 10m long and as they have Roman ends they are really impossible to have a serious swim in - but ok for young children - sunbeds also didnot look appealing.

Breakfast was ok and we had dinner here one night on the terrace (but had to eat from the bar menu) and one night in the main restaurant. Food was ok but not great. Staff apart from the reception and porter seemed disinterested in their jobs and found it hard to raise a smile.

Location is good if you want to explore Winelands but there are probably better for similar money.

I should not be writing a review as that we didn't even make it to the place. But they made us so angry that we thought we should share the story.

We went to Mozambique during busy Christmas holiday and it was strangely easy to book a room at Aguia Negra, given that most of the places we had tried were fully booked.. We paid the deposit, the booking was confirmed, but a week before we were supposed to rrive we received an email saying: Aguia Negra is now closed, for more information contact...

We were apalled by the tone of the email and worried that we had lost our deposit and would be homeless in Mozambique at Chistmas!!! After many emails e phone calls, we finally had our deposit back. We still don't know the truth behind the story, some say they were not insured and couldn't afford to rebuild after the hurricane, some say there were problems between management and staff who did not get paid and they finally went on a strike during the busiest seson in Mozambique!

The good news was that we managed to book a room at Vilanculos Beach Lodge and had an amazing stay there.

We were "forced" to stay here on account of our friend's wedding, and what a pleasure it was! The room was large, bathroom too. The pools were great and the bar, restaurant accommodated large groups (pre wedding).

Our friends had a wonderful day there and I think guests were grateful that they had chosen a place with such good accommodation for everyone who required.

  • Liked — great setting!
  • Disliked — the fact the spa was fully booked

We have been sent to our Italian travel agency to the Agua Negra Lodge in Vilanculos, Mozambique, in exchange with the proposed Casa Rex. No one was at the airport to meet us ( as supposed to be). The lodge is in a wonderful position with a fantastic view of the sea. But it is badly rundown. Probably because of the hurricane which struck the Bazaruto Islands and Vilanculos last January. But replacing a mirror in the bathroom should not need months, even in Mozambique. Our room was rustic, just one plug for electricitry (or you charge your camera or you use the fan), but we overcame it with the view and the beautiful setting. Our friends’ room was without mirrors, without closet or shelves, without bed tables. They did not know where to put things.
The food was OK. Tasty. No much of a choice because many dishes proposed on the scarce menu where not available. No mineral water one night, but OK again. You are in Africa and you do not mind.
The safe in my room was broken so I asked the manager to keep our valuables and money in the hotel safe. I had more than needed currency because I was on my way to get to know two long-distance adopted children of mine and I wanted to be ready for every necessity. With my astonishment, when I went to retrieve the envelopes from the locked room where they where (I realized the envelopes where not inside the safe) I found out that the money had disappeared. The manager said it was impossible. I replied to call the police. At the end we had to go to the local police where, with the help of our just arrived driver, we managed to explained what had happened. To make a long day ( a story) short, after an entire day of discussions, legal advices, refuses, accusations, the chief of the police ordered the hotel manager to give us the money back. Last but not least, after some day we got to know from our driver that the management of the Agua Negra had sent a letter to the local travel agency who arranged the transportation for us, refusing to make any more business with them on the base that we had cheated and robbed them!
I travel a lot, everywhere in the world, and not even in the smallest guest houses of the Cambodia or Latin America something like this has happened to me.
