Description: Founded in 1700, Lourensford Estate has married its historic heritage with a vision to be at the forefront of modern wine technology and a leader amongst South African Wine producers. Owner & Executive Chef, Bjorn Guido’s cooking career started at The Greenhouse at Cellars-Hohenort under chef Peter Templehoff. He then moved abroad and joined Babington House, part of the SOHO HOUSE group, under the renowned Ronnie Bonetti of River Café London. After gaining experience abroad, he returned home and took up the role of Head Chef at The Franschhoek Kitchen on Holden Manz Wine Estate. Food provenance and sustainability are core to Millhouse’s philosophy with much of the seasonal, local ingredients grown on the farm itself. The eatery’s contemporary barn-conversion interiors puts a modern twist on classic elements, featuring a mix of banquette seating and reclaimed timber walls. Bjorn’s aim was to create a neighbourhood feel where guests can relax and enjoy each other’s company. Take a seat at our bar and watch as food is prepared in the expansive open kitchen and Italian style pizza’s are delivered fresh from the wood fired oven.

“Perfect for a laidback birthday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

Had my birthday at Millhouse Kitchen on Sunday - the food was great, the service amazing and over all a day to remember! We were 23 guests, not one single hiccup, remarkable! Definitely a place to have a party or even just to have a glass of wine with a friend (and they have a playground area for the kids)

“A new meaning to a "late" breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014

We have eaten here before and found the food very good.
On Sunday morning March 9th, we had booked a table for ourselves and two guests for a 10 am breakfast. The food - when it eventually arrived - was good but the service was terrible. Our coffees sat and cooled for twenty minutes before the milk, after two reminders, arrived. When we asked (twice) for butter we were brought one pat - for four people - and only after another request did we get enough. No choice of preserve was offered. The restaurant was noisy and there was a lot of waiter activity but it was apparently unsupervised and poorly organized e.g.common items like butter and preserves were not on the tables so each one required a request (or more) and a trip by the waiter. The waiters appeared to be inexperienced and/or poorly trained. When we spoke to the "manager"/greeter he gave us a token apology and, in response to our comment that we had only tipped the waiter half what we normally would have, he said "Well, that's his problem". Our breakfast took over 40 minutes to arrive.
We would not choose to entertain guests here again.

“LOVELY MEAL”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

My wife and I visited on 6 Mar for a "birthday lunch". It was difficult to secure the booking, at first, as they are closed on Mon's and didn't respond to my initial e-mails. Eventually they responded quite vigorously though.
Again, we were not disappointed. The atmosphere and service were good and the meals very appetising. The yellow-tail is to be recommended.
Again they seemed to run out of their local draught beer but I managed to be served the last glass. They were also "out of stock" of their Merlot blend. Surprising and disappointing.
Booking is advised particularly if one prefers tables on the inside patio.
The biscuits purchased from the nearby "coffee shop" were stale.
The setting is exceptional being on the wine farm with the wine cellar close by.
All in all, an enjoyable outing if one ignores the coffee shop.

“Standards are slipping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014 via mobile

The food was nothing like I'd had here before. The kitchen has big ideas about fancy food and no idea how to make it work. Flavours didn't gel, calamari was horribly undercooked, mozzarella and onion tart wasn't a tart at all, and the lamb tasted mostly of lamb fat despite the strange combo of minted peas with chargrilled oranges! The setting is so awesome so I'd really love it if they sorted out the kitchen!!

“Best food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

We love eating at this restaurant. Lovely vegetarian dishes on the menu and the gnocchi is sublime. Look forward to winter dinners around the fireplace.
