“Wonderful walk along the beach to Gerickes Point”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

A stroll along the Swartvlei Beach to Gericke’s Point at low tide is one of our Walking Club's favourite hikes. In September, the Swartvlei Lagoon shoreline next to the road that leads to the carpark is covered with a carpet of stunning Spring flowers that shouldn’t be missed.

The beach is never overcrowded and the curved bay ending at the dramatic rocky outcrop that forms the sitting lion is a splendid sight. The fossilised dune cliffs are some of the highest in South Africa and the striated exposed cliff-face is quite spectacular.

As nature lovers we love to walk along the beach to Gerickes Point and investigate the many rock pools that are exposed at low tide. The endemic African Black Oyster-catchers are plentiful and interesting to watch. It is always a thrill to climb up Gerickes lion and spot dolphins in the bay. We stay as long as we can until the tide turns and the tidal pools start to disappear under the incoming sea.

To get the most out of the walk:
1. Do it at low tide
2. Take refreshments or a picnic lunch.
3. Sunscreen, hat and some shoes to walk over sharp rocks
4. Swimming costume and towel
5. Snorkelling gear if you want to get in to explore rock pools
5.A camera

Warning - don't get caught on the wrong side of the rocks when the tide turns

Enjoy a beach walk that is pure undiluted nature at its finest.
