“Pampered from start to finish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

With our husbands away on a motorbiking trip in Lesotho, us ladies decided to treat ourselves to some luxury and booked a Stable Suite in The Robertson Small Hotel. Our neighbors had stayed here the week before and highly recommended it, and rightfully so! From the minute we walked into the front door to the moment we left, we felt that all staff was pampering us. The room, the food, the wine, the canapes in the early evening, and last but not least the treatment in the Wellness Room, it was all just perfect! We will definitely come back with our husbands, to add some romance as well!

Robertson, where can I start, well the beginning is a good place.

Pulled up and thought am I going to like this, as I walked through the door I knew I would first it was the decor and then the friendly face of Deyone. She very helpfully showed us to a room which I was not happy about, ground floor by reception area.

So she showed us the honeymoon suite, this could not be faulted. She said we would need to pay the difference we agreed.

However she then called to say it could only be for one night, (we were staying two ), as the room had been sold for a family following day.

To be fair she proved to be a good manager by stating it was her mistake and we could stay in the room without paying the difference, so we did.

The next day we were assisted into the room downstairs.

New years Eve both Deyone and Gretche stayed on till gone midnight.

I did not think I would stay up all night but we joined other liked minded guests and were made to feel welcome. They found a speaker for my iPod so we had a private party.

Reuben's Restaurant

This is a well know Restrurant within the hotel, good reputation so the next evening we chose to dine there. This is where there was slight disappointment, because they were short of staff, serving and also a change in the kitchens with a new chef, food was delayed not just ours but everyone's, so people started to complain and it did become stressful for the staff.

One other disappointment and again this is no fault of the hotel but it really is not suitable for children in my humble opinion as it is rather a small establishment and not for children to run around in. Especially in a fine dining room area, which is what also happened on the evening things went wrong, this did not help.

Rooms
Excellent Decor, lovely linen comfortable beds, very clean, small tray with all that is necessary.

Spa

Unfortunately closed as the therapist has not yet been replaced.

Staff

10/10 says it all, helpful, happy faces even when things are not right. Could not do more for us.
Helped with booking a river trip maps etc all the small touches.

Would I return? Yes I would
Would I recommend this hotel Yes I would.

Room Tip: Ask for the honeymoon suite upstairs loft.

Stayed here for only one night and we were blown away. Except for us, there was only one other couple staying over and as a result we were upgraded to a Stable suites (which had a small terrace and faced onto a pool). The hotel is still new so fully loaded (ipod docking stations), fresh and modern decor, everything in good condition and very good quality. I fell in love with the large bathroom which had a huge tub and large walk in shower. The barman served perfectly made cocktails & the Reuben's restaurant was divine. Even breakfast is a fine dining experience, we felt so spoilt (don't fill up on the "cold" buffet selection - there is a large hot a la carte menu too!) Beautiful gardens and very attentive service.. seriously one of the best places we've every stayed in!

Room Tip: The pool suites seemed nice, but i reckon the stable suites are better as they are in an old part of...

Our stay at the Robertson small hotel was one of the best anywhere. The attention to detail was evident everywhere and the friendly staff constantly exceeded our expectations by making our stay a comfortable one and our visit one to remember. The food was amazing at Reubens and the experience overall at the hotel made us feel at home and relaxed throughout. I will recommend the Hotel to anyone looking for excellence!

Room Tip: If you are looking for a bit more privacy the poolside suites in the corner is the place to stay. (U...

We stayed here for one night as part of a tour, and wish we could have stayed longer! Our room was beautifully decorated, and not a thing was missing, from the fully stocked (and all included) mini fridge and handmade sweets at bedtime, to the perfectly appointed bathroom. We also had dinner at Reuben's, which was an amazing experience. The grounds are impeccably manicured, and so peaceful. I hope to get back someday!

Roberston is one of South Africa's most wonderful wine routes, and although it may be on the edge of the Klein Karoo (a semi arid desert) this cool boutique hotel is a charming, welcome oasis. We had #7 - one of 4 poolside cabanas with private decks, enormous bathroom, giant bath - biggest TV I've ever seen, stunning decor, free mini-bar.

Restaurant on site is class act, no day trippers = very private. French style courtyard great for breakfast.

We felt pampered and indulged. An intimate, romantic retreat.

Room Tip: Cheaper rooms are in the actual house - i.e. near reception, kitchen and bar. Opt for extra and take...

As the final stop on our short honeymoon, I was looking forward to our stay at the Robertson Small Hotel for a relaxing few days before heading back to the demands of the 'real world'. After a 6+ hour drive from the Eastern Cape, all we wanted to do upon our arrival in the late afternoon was unpack and rest before enjoying dinner at Reuben's restaurant.

Unfortunately this was not to be as our room was directly adjacent to the hotel bar on one side, the restaurant on the other and our front door literally opened onto the communal seating area outside the bar (2m from our door!). Our beautiful room's bay windows also had to be shut and covered immediately as we had hotel guests as well as staff walking past our windows and peering in (the bed faces these windows). Due to some guests having enjoyed a bit too much wine that day, we had to turn up the tv volume to drown out their drunken debate (they were sitting at the table 2m from our front door) and I was assured from staff that this was very rarely the case and that this would cease after dinner. This was not to be, and we were subjected to people shouting and laughing from dinnertime until after midnight.

My real complaint is not with the guests who enjoyed themselves at the bar as that is to be expected, but that when I phoned the hotel to make the booking as well as via email correspondence, I asked the manager and another staff member for the room booked (it was recommended by a friend) and asked whether it was quiet and private due to us being on honeymoon. At no stage was the proximity to the bar and restaurant mentioned and when I promptly checked out the following morning, our honeymoon cut short and ended on a low note, no apology was made whatsoever.

The privacy and noise problems are not only limited to the room we stayed in. One can quite easily look into *all* poolside suites from the common area and another couple had to endure people taking the 'party' to outside their suite after the bar finally closed.

In conclusion, it's a nice, clean hotel with a lovely restaurant. Just don't go there unless you're the only guests. We'll obviously never set foot near there again.

Room Tip: It seems only the honeymoon suite has a semblance of privacy and quiet.

TheRobertson, General Manager at The Robertson Small Hotel, responded to this review, October 31, 2011
The Robertson Small Hotel welcomes feedback from our guests and appreciate your review. It is unfortunate that Mr Schramm did not enjoy their accommodation as this specific room was a request from Mr Schramm as commended to him by friends (word of mouth). The Hotel has diffirent luxury room types with diffirent rates and the higher rates also offer more privacy.
The hotel was full during this weekend and due to a wine festival and some of the guests were a bit more noisy and arrived back at the hotel a little later than ususal. As soon as the complaint was made the next morning, the manager on duty explained that the hotel was fully booked and apologised for the noise outside their room which occurred after hours. he also offerred them a complimentary stay and ugrade to a pool side suite for the following night and also included a bottle of sparkling wine the previous night as part of their turn down. Even thought they were booked for two nights, the offer was declined and they decided to leave. The Guest was nog charged for two nights.
