This is the real deal - where the locals go for a good value unpretentious meal in an unpretentious establishment. They have even been known to deliver take-aways free of charge. Can recommend without hesitation !

“Safe & Sound”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

Gerry & Maria, owners of Prickly Pear, are not your ordinary pub-folk. Gerry is a retired engineer who worked for Chrysler in the "States" and bought Prickley Pear on retirement. Maria is a "boerevrou" who have been by his side for decades. And Gerry is a Scot. Extraordinary couple.

I just returned from a long working holiday in Prince Albert, and Prickly was where I ate daily. I also exhausted his supply of Amstel. If Maria says it's going to take 20 minutes to make a pizza, she means it. Not like some other places in town. It's also going to be the best pizza in town.

Everyday for the last month, I went there not just to eat. I also watched TV (something i don't do very often). Gerry & Maria would watch gameshows like "Who wants to be a millionaire?" and "Deal or No Deal" and we would guess the answers and laugh at the answers given by the contestants. It was hilarious. Fun. And the fun is for free. The food and drinks not expensive: value. And none of that waste on garnish and 'prettifying' the food. The food is wholesome and the atmosphere real.

Especially when Gerry starts to talk politics, economics, or any of the subjects is he is fluent in.

It is also a shop where you can get milk, sugar, and the local paper. You can sit outside on the stoep, inside the shop to watch rugby on the big screen, or in the tiny pub, with Scottish & American memorabilia and photo's taken during parties at Prickly Pear.

I became a local. And with Gerry & Maria around, that's not very difficult. Can't wait for my next working holiday in Prince Albert.
