“Warm welcome on a cold evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

After a long day of driving from Hermanus and arriving after dark in Prince Albert in the cold, it was great to be greeted by a warm welcome in the form of Mai with her ready smile and an already warm room. In my short 1 week in South Africa end July 2012 (and first time there in winter), I found that to be a rarity there. Some of the rooms I stayed in took ages to warm up; some never did fully! The room was very clean and comfortable; it's a very old house but well-maintained. Mai recommended three restaurants for dinner which were just a few doors down so that was convenient. Tried two of them while I was there and both were good (Gallery Cafe and Swartberg Arms). I really enjoyed the breakfasts; everything was really fresh and nothing looked or tasted like it came from a supermarket. Cats, lots of them. Mai has 11 of them; all well taken care of. I like cats so that was a bonus. Mai's very gregarious and nice to chat to. She had a friend over the last night I was there and she invited me to partake of her lamb curry dinner. I think I know curries and hers was awesome! Oh yes, I enjoyed the conversation too :-). Prince Albert is a really peaceful place, ideal for taking some time off from everyday life. There's good food and wine to be found there. Karoo lamb is really good. There's not a whole lot to do there but then again one goes to Prince Albert to chill. Having said that, the dessert wine at Soetkaroo was really good and the cheese and milk from the Guernsey cows at Gay's Dairy were delicious. I'd visit Prince Albert again and when I do, I'd definitely stay at Mai's again.

Room Tip: Get the cottage in the garden (but not in winter)

It might be the quaint guest house with the tastefully decorated extremely clean rooms,...or the large private outside grounds that allow for a relaxing morning. It could be the friendly staff with the delightful cooked to order breakfast, or the large porch with the comfortable chairs to watch the town folk go by......but no it's actually the friendly exuberance of Mai, the lady with the smile and personality imported from the Emerald Isles that sets this B&B apart from all the others we visited in South Africa. She loves Prince Albert and the Karoo and she can't help but show it. If you can get in don't miss it!!!

We stayed at Mai's during June 2012 as a family of 4. Mai is such a warm and welcoming person and she made our stay memorable. The rooms are clean and spacious with very neat and tidy bathrooms. It was quite cold when we visited but we were never cold or uncomfortable inside. The breakfast is THE BEST and the whole guesthouse peaceful and beautiful (even though it was winter) We will definately be back. We stayed at the hotel as well but it was not nearly as nice as Mai's. Well worth a visit.

We spent 4 days in Prince Albert recently and staying at Mai's was the best experience of our 3 week trip. Mai is warm and friendly with loads of great info on the area. She took us to a spot just outside town to witness the awesome Karoo sunset, accompanied by the best Prince Albert cheese & wine. Her rooms are very comfy and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were epic... the most delicious ever experienced at a B&B!! Thanks Mai, we will be back as soon as we can.

Room Tip: ALL the rooms are great!

We had a fantastic few days in beautiful Prince Albert. Mai is very cheerful, warm and welcoming and was always happy to answer our questions and make reservations at resturants etc. The house and gardens are beautiful and all the rooms are tastefully deorated with private bathrooms attached... And the breakfasts are absolutely delicious- the best we had during our 2 week trip! I would also really recommend going on a walk with the storyteller Ailsa (details on Mai's website). Ailsa has so much knowledge about the history and families of Prince Albert (including the ghosts!) and tells a great story. Thanks Mai for a making our time in Prine Albert so special.

We stayed with Mai at the end of April and it was like staying with friends, It's such a beautiful house. We had a family room (there was only two of us but if you had kids they would love the bump beds), the room was large, clean and had a very homey feel to it. Such a comfortable bed, didn't want to leave it.
It's in the perfect location, walking distance to everything.
Mai herself is so lovely and we went away thinking we knew her for ages, you could sit there and talk to her for ages. A really lovely friendly lady.
Breakfast was good, freshly cooked up and it's nice to chat to the other guests as well.
I would highly recommend staying here if you are in Prince Albert.

Thanks so much Mai

Second visit to Prince Albert and second time staying at Mai's. What a superb hostess Mai is. So very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. All the little things that make a stay comfortable are there, and the breakfasts are great. Mai, thanks for making our stay so special, you come highly recommended!!
