We stayed one of the two self-catering apartments at the back of this B+B. The location was good, within easy driving distance of Cape Town and all its attractions. There are a couple of medium-sized supermarkets within a few minutes drive, the Spar being cheaper than Woolworths. There are also two lovely restaurants within very easy walking distance of the property: the Lookout Deck and the Mariners Wharf. The Lookout is more casual and was quiet the first night we went, but was really busy on the Sunday evening. The Mariners was more expensive, but the food and atmosphere were good. There are plenty of other restaurants in Hout Bay, but not really within walking distance.
The room was pretty basic, the decor quite tired and it felt a little chilly at times (September is the end of winter). We struggled to dry our towels in the bathroom during the day. The kitchenette could have been better equipped - I wouldn't have wanted to cook or eat a full meal there. We were a little taken aback by the bars on the windows and doors when we arrived: this was out first visit to South Africa and the first property we had stayed in, so we weren't sure what to expect. We had booked for four nights and that first evening, we wondered whether we should look for somewhere else to stay, even though we'd booked and pre-paid the accommodation through Expedia. The following morning, however, the sun was shining and we decided to stay on! We did feel safe walking to the two local restaurants, even in the evenings, but probably wouldn't have ventured much further afield without the security of the car. Our host was helpful when we realised that the "worldwide" travel adapter we'd brought from the UK didn't work, and also when there was a power cut during our stay. In case you are wondering, the electrical sockets are unique to South Africa - buy an adapter when you get there!
This was by far the cheapest place we stayed in South Africa, so if budget is important, you could do worse than this. If you have a little more to spend, the B+B itself looked much nicer and in retropect I think we'd have preferred to stay there!
