“Good, but Room for Impovement”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

We have been here twice during the past 6 months. The food is tasty and nice, but that the menu is almost the same after 6 months is not a good sign. I cannot see that the master chef's talent and creativity is much present here.
The service is OK, but nothing more.
If this restaurant lived up to it potential, it would be the best in Franschhoek. Now it is only one of many good restaurants there.

“As good as its reputation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

We went on a Wednesday lunch pre-booked, service 5 star, so don't know how they cope when really busy. I'd just describe the food as Paris standard at reasonable rand prices. I'd never pay R72 for a dessert anywhere else, but unmatchable.

“Lacklustre service. Average food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014 via mobile

We had really looked forward to our dinner at Reuben's because our SA friends had recommended it. Unfortunately it wasn't a great experience.

We were seated in a tiny table for two, between two other tables, even though the other half of the restaurant was empty. We could hear the conversations going on at the tables next to us.

Service was lacklustre and it could have passed off for service in a casual diner instead of a fine restaurant.

We had two starters and two mains and all four dishes came looking exactly the same from top down. Covered with sprouts. Such a lack of finesse in presentation for a highly rated chef is disappointing. I didn't bother taking any pictures of my food, because they would hv all looked the same. My starter of prawns came with soggy battered mushrooms and scallops. While my beef fillet main was dry and unflavourful. My fillet steak at Spur (an unplanned stop) the next day in Knysna tasted like a million bucks in comparison.

There are nicer restaurants in Franschhoek. I wouldn't go to Reuben's again.

“Exceptional food, dire service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

We arrived for dinner to be told that we did not have a reservation. This was despite the fact that we were present when our inn keeper made the reservation on our behalf, and was given a reservation number. We provided this number and were told it did not mean anything. We were shown to a table in a corner and waited. We observed other guests arriving and being served bread and drinks promptly. We asked for the cocktail menu, and after 15 minutes the manager asked us if he could recommend a wine. We did reply that it would be nice, but could we see the cocktail menu that had been requested 15 minutes earlier. He went away and in 10 minutes returned again asking about wine. We eventually ordered and received cocktails that were really poor. We had ordered cosmopolitans but what we received was sweet and sickly with a glace cherry. We took the managers advice on wine and ordered the bottle he suggested. A little while later, our waiter brought us a bottle of wine and told us that what we had ordered was not available but this was very similar. My husband asked to see the wine list and saw that the wine offered was the most expensive on the list. We therefore ordered something else. Our starters eventually came, and were very good. There was then a considerable wait before our main courses arrived. During this time our waiter removed our cutlery, stating that we needed steak knives. We also observed other guests being offered the bread basket, something that was not offered to us. Our main courses arrived and we pointed out that we had no cutlery. It was several more minutes before the cutlery arrived. The main courses were excellent, in fact the best pork belly that we have ever tasted!
For some reason our bottle of wine was not left at the table but stored a short distance away. When our glasses were empty we got the attention of another waiter who subsequently blatantly ignored us.
At the conclusion of our meal our displeasure was noted, probably due to our enquiry, as to why we had not been offered bread when every other guest had and the difficulty in refilling our wine glasses. On bringing us our bill, the waiter apologised profusely and said the manager was very sorry. We pointed out that if he was that sorry he could have spoken to us himself. Whilst our waiter was apologising the waiter who had earlier ignored us interrupted him and told him to hurry up as other customers were waiting to pay. This was the final straw and we asked to speak to the manager. To be fair, the manager was very apologetic and dealt with the bill. The food was exceptional but was badly let down by the appalling service.

“Another Feather for Franschhoek's Cap!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

This a great place to spend a romantic evening, a charming ambience, excellent food and great service! There is nothing pretentious about Reuben's although the food is kind of fancy, you feel right at home in his restaurant!
