“Amazing place and people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

what an unusual and special place the Akademie Street Hotel is. the welcome from Arthur, Katherine and the team is not of the plastic 'have a nice day' variety but genuine, warm and personal. as many others have said, nothing seems too much trouble for them. our cottage was attractively decorated, very spacious and spotlessly clean. our garden space was secluded, colourful with some beautiful flowers and contained a sweet little pool. I'm not usually one to linger over breakfast but sitting in the delightful shaded courtyard was a joy with fantastic fresh fruit and cooked breakfast to order it was hard to move away. Lovely place, service and people. If we are ever lucky enough to go back to to the Winelands of South Africa, there is only one place we'd consider staying, the amazing Akademie Street Hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at Akademie Street Boutique Hotel! We stayed in the Vreugde cottage which may be the smallest cottage on the property but its very cozy and romantic AND you have your own private pool! This is a family run property and the staff are amazing. They gave us lots of suggestions and took time to get to know us. We also really appreciated the free laundry service! Breakfast was delightful, and hearty. You had your starters of fruit, homemade muesli etc... and then ordered a main made to order meal. The staff even remembered I only ate egg whites and prepared my breakfast how I loved it without me asking. Its very private and quite here, and feels like a home away from home. There's lots of amenities including books and DVD's to borrow, free mini bar and snacks. You feel very safe here and I would highly recommend this property to anyone including families, couples, and solo travelers! We stayed here as part of our honeymoon and look forward to returning one day.

You can't improve on perfection and yet Arthur, Katharine and the team manage to do so every time. This was our third visit to our beloved Akademie (being pretty boring, we always stay in Twyfeling B, which is home from home) and it is, as always, faultless. Not sure where to start... the warm welcome, the brilliant team (including Hazel, Jessie, Auntie Margie and Fransina), the fabulous breakfasts, with delicious jams, a perfect fruit platter, eggs cooked just so, proper sausages, good coffee.

The room is lovely and quiet, with a great black and white tiled shower, a bath, a well lit mirror, good toiletries, big fluffy towels. There's a fridge (with soft drinks and water included in the price, together with a half bottle of bubbly, beer and spirits), a coffee machine and snacks. I was touched to see that Katherine had sourced some MSG-free crisps for us (I'm allergic to MSG). And thanks to Jessie who fixed up an emergency dental appointment for me a couple of days before Christmas, which wasn't easy, I'm sure.

Anna the dog, whom we have known for the last three years, is a wonderful addition to the whole Akademie family and she roams around happily (in fact I nearly asked for her lead so I could take her for a walk). We spent many hours reading under the lemon tree or in the conservatory (great in the evenings). The pool is lovely and warm and the loungers inviting, whether for an hour's reading in the shade or some serious sunbathing.

What more can I say... a wonderfully comfortable bed, great linen, good reading lights, some of the best restaurants in the world at your doorstep and, of course, Katharine and Arthur's warmth and kindness. This is paradise and I cannot wait to return.

We spent three nights at this beautiful Hotel. Arthur, Catherine and Hazel cannot do enough to make your stay so memorable. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

We stayed in the Pool Room - huge, spotless with an amazing bathroom. Breakfasts are to die for. Home made meusli, freshly cooked items and a fruit plate that has to be seen to be believed!!

Hazel arranged our two half day trips to the vineyards of Franschoek and Stellanbosch. Our Driver Denver in his BMW was extremely knowledgable and we learnt so much about the beautiful wines of the area.

This hotel is exceptional, service, staff, food, cleanliness and location. If there were six stars this little gem would without doubt be awarded it. If you visit Franschoek this is the place to stay!!

We stayed in the pool room which is situated in the main part of the old Cape Dutch style house (thick walls, high ceilings, spacious). The room had a huge bed, with fantastic bedding, a huge beautiful bathroom with glass ceiling and a little private outside patio. This is a very tranquil place where we felt comfortable and at home. Lots of beautiful nooks and crannies inside and out to relax in. Felt very nice and safe, and quick 3 minute walk to the main street with restaurants and shops. The owner is such a nice lady who made us feel very at home. Staff are friendly and very welcoming, lots of smiles all around. Breakfast is abundant & delicious, we could't eat for the rest of the day!

Room Tip: Each room is unique, but in the main part of the house the pool room was definitely our favourite.

We spent two days touring around the Franschoek and Stellenbosch area which is only hour or two out of Cape Town. The area is famous for wine growing with spectacular mountains and terrific architecture and restaurants. It is well worth hiring a car and spending a few days in this region. The roads and signage are excellent.

The Akademie Guesthouse was really very special. We booked a stand alone Cape Dutch cottage called Oortuiging, an atmospheric Franschhoek cottage built in the 1860's. It has two en-suite bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen and a dining room. The private plunge pool and gardens that come with the cottage were wonderful.

Snacks and all drinks including spirits, beer soft drinks, tea and coffee are all supplied free. The hot breakfast in the main cottage courtyard is fanastic. We had a terrific stay made even more special because of the weclome we received by the manager. The main street of Franschoek is an easy walk from the guesthouse. There is a large number of cafes and restaurants to choose from.

We booked the guesthouse online through tripadvisor and would definitiely visit the guesthouse and the region again.

Room Tip: Check out their website for the room types available.

We spent a wonderful 3 nights at Akademie Street. We were impressed from the moment of our arrival by the thoughtful and kind reception received and continued to be impressed throughout our stay. The attention to detail everywhere but especially in our beautiful room, with every convenience and luxury imaginable, even down to the provision of a mobile phone, programmed with local restaurant numbers, was a delight! The service we received from all the staff was exceptional at all times and breakfast, in the garden or indoors, was both delicious and ample. We shall certainly return for a further and longer stay if we have the opportunity!
