“What a GEM!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2009

We had the oppertunity to stay at this property. What a GEM! Being from SA we were suprised to be treated as all international visitors are, from arrival to departure. My name was used from arriving at the front door. The views are spectacular, being from JHB, mountains have never looked so beautiful! Staff were inviting and helpful, making sure that our every need was covered. We were treated to a fantastic evening in the fine dining restaurant, being clean, professional and on the ball. We took the choice of having a picnic the very next day, sitting by the dam in peace taking in the tranquility of the farm. Management take the time to visit and talk to you, rarely seen at any place we have visited. This is definately our home away from home! They will be sure to see us again soon. Keep up the proudly South African name, with good food, outstanding service and personal touches. Well done!

Staying at Mont Rochelle for two nights was supposed to be the highlight of our honeymoon and was unfortunately a very average experience. The location and the views are stunning, the rooms are sumptuous but the service is extremely inconsistent. We got the impression that we had the 'B' team while we stayed there. The rooms weren't serviced properly - you ended up having to ask for additional drinks/towels as they weren't replaced. Service around the pool was non existant even when we asked for towels no one brought us one - quite frankly the whole area was a mess. In the bar area a drink had been spilt and the glass smashed and this still wasn't cleared up after 20minutes. This hotel charges 5* european prices but is more like a 2*. Dinner in the Hotel however was very good and the service excellent - not so with the vineyard restaurant - give that a miss and go somewhere else!

Both my Husband and I did not think that 'The Mont Rochelle Hotel' was worthy of be a 5 star though for numerous reasons. 1. The rooms had cheap non blackout curtains so the sun would wake us at 6am every morning.
2. The lounges by the pool were no good they need to invest in new ones.
3. The service by the pool was mostly non existent and had to wait an hour or more to get a towel or a drink.
4. The worst thing was the flies on the food at Breakfast?! In all good hotels that we have stayed where it is hot ie Thailand if
theres a buffet then every item of food is covered! Even in 3 star
places! However the meal we had in the restaurant the first night was very good we both enjoyed that, but I ended up having to eat in the hotel 2 other nights as my husband got an upset Tummy and didnt want to go out to eat and this was VERY difficult as the menu is soo limited and did not change on a day to day basis so I had to eat the same thing twice, so more variety/healthy options/ NO dairy are definatly needed here!

Overall would not recommend this place to anyone, the views and location are amazing but sleep and good food are more importanat factors to enjoy a well earned holiday! Id say stay somewhere else and visit here for wine tasting only or dinner once only!

Stayed in the Pinotage suite for one night during Christmas 2008 - and we loved every minute of it, from the arrival to the departure.

Service was professional and friendly.
Our room was very, very nice :) With an awesome view.
Pool area was nice as well.

The Mange Tout restaurant is the fine cuisine alternative, food was good and the pianist added to the atmosphere.
We had Christmas lunch in the Country Kitchen, the more laid back restaurant situated at MR's winery. Good food and nice location here as well.

We did not try the spa amenities, so can't really comment on that.

Surely the best hotel I've stayed at.

The Mont Rochelle hotel is located a few minutes drive from the town centre and is in the middle of beautiful vineyards.

The hotel is beautiful. The thatched roof, gardens and views are absolutely stunning.

The service is professional and friendly but slightly impersonal.
Our room was great. A good size, very comfortable with a lovely balcony overlooking the vineyards.

We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but breakfast was the best we had during our South Africa trip.

The only real disappointment was the spa. The sauna was not turned on so if you wanted to use it you had to wait 30 minutes for it to heat up and the jacuzzi was freezing!

I would definitely stay here again for a luxurious stay.

Mont Rochelle is fairly well located in Franschoek. The hotel is nice and not massive but I found it slightly dated decor-wise. Nonetheless it was clean and the breakfast was good. The Mont Rochelle winery is not the best one in Franschoek but worth a look and taste if you are staying at the hotel (although you do still hae to pay for it).
I would recommend this hotel, perhaps more so for seniors or tourists than for honeymooners.

The hotel is set on a vineyard just behind Franschoek and has beautiful surroundings. On our arrival, we were given a glass of wine and we spent a bit of time relaxing in front of the log fire, ignoring the rain outside.

The room itself was beautiful with the finishing touches you would expect from 5-star accommodation - robes, mini-bar, nice toiletries, underfloor heating - great in the morning when you jumped out of bed!

As the hotel is just outside of town you would have to drive or take a taxi to eat in the town. As we were only staying two nights, we ate in the restaurant in the hotel one night and in the more casual restaurant on the vineyard the other night. Both were great meals. The food in the main restaurant was just stunning and there were additional amuse-bouche courses which were a real treat. Only tiny criticism was that the restaurant was a little cold (and that's from a Scot!), but we loved the semi-circular room with windows looking over the vineyards.

When the sun came out on our final morning we were able to see the vineyard and pool and grounds in all their glory. Stunning surroundings. We would definitely go back!
