“fascinating memorial”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

very interesting monument with some fascinating symbolism which depicts the ideology of the Huguenots. Very tranquil place and on a lovely sunny day, perfect to wander around and contemplate the lives of these early pioneers.

“History abounds!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

The stories around the monument tell an amazing tale of the French settlers. The gardens are beautiful and well kept and the whole area is worth seeing.

“Interesting and Educational”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

I didn't know many of the things I learned about the Huguenot's and their early settlements. While Africa is all about Safaris and other fun things, it was good to learn a bit of history at this well presented and very interesting museum.
Definitively recommend you make time (about 30 minutes)

“Ancestral visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

It had been about 35 years since I had last been to visit the Huguenot monument in Franschhoek, then as a little boy who was taken to the monument by parents very proud of our ancesteral heritage, being descendants of one of the De Villiers brothers from my Dad's side and the De Klerks on my Mom's side, who left France for South Africa in the 1680's.
The monument and grounds are well maintained and a recent addition of a sun dial in the garden, with dates of which boats landed when and which families made up the group of Huguenots, etched in around the granite base, makes for interesting viewing.
If you are interested in discovering more about South African heritage, then the monument is well worth a visit.
There fee to enter the monument and gardens is very reasonable with a separate fee to enter the museum.

“Fantastic setting and beautiful tribute to huguenots.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Being of French huguenot descent via the UK, it was interesting to visit the monument to the huguenots who fled persecution to settle in South Africa. Some elements of the interpretation of the symbols on this fine piece of architectural sculpture were dubious however. The cloister area behind the memorial is a wonderful place to sit and contemplate the hardships these settlers faced in settling the Franschhoek valley.
