What an experience! OUTSTANDING, CREATIVE and beautiful food prepared with precision is about the best and most accurate description I can think of. EVERYTHING we ordered was "as good as food gets".

“Exceptional”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2014

It’s been nearly two weeks since my husband and I dined here, and I am still thinking about Chef Ryan’s Cape Malay pickled trout en papilotte. The flavor was wonderfully complex, with a hint of heat and a touch of sweetness to finish. It is easily one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. We ordered the 4-course tasting menu with wine pairing, and would recommend it as a great way to sample what this chef does best. The space is warm and cozy, and the open kitchen made it feel like we were dining at a friend’s house. (A world-class chef friend, that is.) The exceptional food in an unpretentious atmosphere was a refreshing break from the norm in gourmet dining. Our table was right next to the open kitchen, so we had a great view of the focused kitchen staff at work. If you are at all interested in cooking, book well in advance and request a table inside so you can see your meal as it’s prepared. Service was attentive and the courses well-paced, giving us enough time to savor the food but not become bored.

“best meal in Franschhoek”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2014

Wow
We felt like we were eating in a small dining room of a private house - very intimate, and you can see the chefs in action in their small kitchen - the food was outstanding. The chef surprised us with a plant pot course which was not only amusing but delicious. If we'd had more night in Franschhoek, then we'd definitely booked there again.

“Leave it to the chef”

Excellent high quality food. Had the 4 course chefs choice with matching wines. Great service and value in a lovely restaurant. Out door seating in attractive garden. Must book as very popular.

“Great cooking and service at Ryan's”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

We want to to add to the positive reviews for this special place in Franschhoek. The small kitchen only caters for a few dozen covers - but we had a great evening by choosing the 4 course chef's selection and matching wines:
Mini pail of minted pea puree with mushroom 'soil' followed by a starter of duck parfait with watermelon and salted caramel matched with ratafia wine; next was the cape malay pickled trout 'en papilotte' matched to a Mount Rochelle semillon wine; then a refreshing pineapple sorbet before the mains of springbok loin with beetroot tapioca, baby beets and ju matched to a Rickety Bridge syrah; we shared two desserts: a granadilla soufflé with banana and almond ice cream and a rich chocolate inverted fondant with ice cream and hot chocolate mint sauce matched to a muscatel sweet wine.
Service was attentive and the matching wines really complemented the food. The team in the open kitchen worked quietly but obviously knew their jobs to deliver on both quality and timing. A great evening and great food.
