Description: Fyndraai is an exciting restaurant with a local twist, on the Solms-Delta wine estate outside Franschhoek. The food, like its adventurous wines, lives up to the Solms-Delta claim of being proudly Hiervandaan (‘from this place’). You not only walk into history in the 325-year-old wine farm restaurant, you walk OVER it. The glass floor covers the archaeological substructure of a 1740 wine cellar.

“One of my favourites in the winelands!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

I take Tours du Cap clients to Solms-Delta for wine tastings, a museum visit and lunch, regularly. All my clients have loved it every time, with no exception.

This is an unusual estate in the Cape winelands, in that the staff are shareholders - not only is this a fantastic initiative that allows them to reclaim ownership of land that was taken from their ancestors, but it ensures that they take pride in their work and give excellent friendly, hands-on service.

There are various options for lunch - a picnic, an a la carte menu, or the food and wine pairing. All food is exquisitely prepared by the passionate chef Shaun, and uses local ingredients including fynbos, the unique Cape kingdom flora. The results are excellent and allow you to taste the unusual combination of foods that makes up South African cuisine.

There's a large lawn for children to play on while you eat and the setting for the picnic is very lovely.

Next time you want a wine and food experience that combines quality with a down-to-earth setting - this is your best bet in Franschhoek.

“A great discovery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

We dropped in by chance and enjoyed a great afternoon in beautiful surroundings. The food overall was good apart from tough lamb which was sent back. The disappointment was handled very well though and the charges removed from the bill.
The atmosphere was good and there is lots of space for kids to run amuck.

“A disappointing experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Our experience at Fyndraai was incredibly disappointing. Service was shocking, with cutlery being delivered in a haphazard fashion during each course (diners had to use their forks to dish up from the pooitjie dishes). One of the main meals was delivered after everyone else had finished theirs. Another of the main meals was delivered without the vegetable portion present on other similar meals (the missing veg was supplied on a side-plate later on request). Excusable perhaps in a busy period, but the place was practically empty at the time. Perhaps the major issue to highlight would be a safety issue, around the corner from the eating area (next to the museum), out of sight of parents is a set of stairs leading up to an attic. The railings might suffice for an adult, but a wandering child under 6 would be provided scant protection from a 5m drop. The food ranged between excellent and ordinary. With so much else on offer in the area and surrounds, I would hesitate to go back.

“Best steak!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

I had the rib eye steak at Fyndraai, and it was one of the best meals I have ever had! The atmosphere and setting was good but the food was great! Value for money!

“Good food, good setting, great social awareness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

We enjoyed a good lunch on the restaurant's patio. The food and service was good. What is remarkable about this wine estate, and worth supporting, is that they have chosen to empower the workers on the estate (the workers share part of the land and sell their wine) and to encourage cultural community enterprises - such as a community choir. When we were there someone from the estate gave a talk to a group of foreign visitors. Lunch only.
