“The hide makes this camp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

We stay at Nossob only to experience the hide. The chalets are adequate but once the electricity is switched off at night they become ovens. The hide attracts lions, cheetah and leopards so may be worth suffering for a few hours at night if they put in an appearance! I have heard that SANParks will be renovating the existing units and maybe even building some river-facing chalets as has been done at Mata Mata.

I don't think all camps should be luxurious, but I would appreciate insect screens to allow windows to be left open on hot nights! A unique & remote camp, made special by its game hide. Fall asleep to the roar of lions...

Nossob is the last main rest camp in the Nossob Valley. It is heavily fenced with big security gates (probably needed). It has a last frontier outpost feel to it with a lot of camping.
The accomodation is not updated and resembles what I imagine an East German Baltic resort would be like in 1950. So the rooms are simple (no air con) with fridge and cooking facilities. That would be all right except...
The concrete absorbs the 40C temp during the day and kindly lets it out into the room all night. That means you need to open the windows which would be OK if it wasnt for the mosquitoes who are lurking there knowing you have to give in. They are helped in their breeding habits by kind mossie friendly people who leave pools of standing water around. No mossie nets of course.
The place is saved by an excellent hide with great chances of seeing lion, hyena etc.

Travelling in March 2012 with a group of safari first timers we stayed in Block 9 at the camp. The properties are clean and functional, however all power is switched off from 2200 until 0500hrs. This leaves you without room fans and a night of extreme heat. Having the windows open made very little difference resulting in next to no sleep which impacted on the proceeding day safaris. A real shame as the park is beautiful , we saw a fair amount of wildlife. Whilst I appreciate that it is in the middle of the desert and one should not expect luxury it seems crackers to have fans available for use during the day when for the most part you are out of the camp and then to turn them off when you need to rest at night.

Nossob is just fine for what it is, a rest camp for you while exploring the Kgalagadi park. The chalets are basic, but clean and comfortable. My only complaint is that the electricity is switched off at 10pm, so with it goes the use of the ceiling fans. Definately not a pleasant experience in December. I couldn't wait for 5am for the electricity to come back on. There is a shortage of ice during the hot months so make sure you are well stocked.

Nice surroundings. The stuffs were a little bit nerved. Be carefull if you arrive the Rest camp without a filled up food box. Their is indeed a smal store but with only very few foods. The freeze food war probably old. Swimming pool in the dessert middle - great feeling. Can recommend this Rest Camp for 1 max 2 nights.

Nossob is a great place for being far enough from the civilisation, yet not so unreachable as Gharagap or Grootkolk that would need a whole day to get there, possibly.
It is reachable within 5 hours from twee rivieren without a four-wheel drive, and it offers reasonable comfort for being a desert camp. We stayed in a two bedroom chalet (3 guys), a few nights, the place was comfortable and clean, kitchen just enough for simple cooking. Lion roar in the night and a returning brown scorpion on the porch made the experience just right :)
The swimming pool in the camp is surprisingly large and clean, great in the middle of the day, and the attached lookout on the waterhole is great for observing wildlife in the evening/night after gate closure.
Personnel are nice and very helpful, especially the park rangers with the tips on where it's worthy to look for the big cats (we found some). They even borrowed us a second pair of binoculars in one morning to use it that day (one for three guys is a bit ... well, under equipped).
It was not crowded at all when we've been there (february) and the other guests were also friendly people.

Room Tip: Houses on the back of the camp have a nice view over the valley and the rest of the camp.
