“Camp life was never this good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2011

We attended a wedding at Giant's Castle and stayed in a chalet with a spectacular view down the valley towards the mountain that gave the camp its name. Giant's Castle calls itself a "camp" but the housing is all in separate cabins with either a mountain or a garden view. The furnishings are comfortable and practical. They include a wood burning fireplace, full kitchen, and porch or patio. Satisfying meals are available in the central restaurant. But the real story here are the trails, including one to some caves that have 2000 year-old drawings by the valleys original inhabitants, the San people. We took a guided walk with Nic Shaw who runs a local environmental education center. Nic is extremely knowledgeable and made the 45-minute walk perfectly fascinating. Ask if he's available and if he is, sign up for his guided walk.

Room Tip: Mountain view chalets are worth the small extra cost.

We stayed for 3 nights in two adjoining chalets. As the chalets were quite pricey we opted for the cheaper garden view chalets. They were very close together but fortunately we had good friendly neighbours.
The staff were friendly but we were frustrated by the inability of the staff to be able to advise at 3 pm what the three choices of evening meal were to enable us to decide whether to eat in the restaurant or have a brai. The menu changed daily and the one evening meal we had was fairly mediocre.
The shop had a few basic groceries and a selection of souvenirs. It is best to be prepared and take all the groceries you need as the nearest shop is 30km away.
The staff mixed up our booking despite being told twice and only booked us in for 2 nights instead of 3 but were able to accommodate us although at a busy time it could have caused difficulties.
If you want to visit the excellent bird hide be sure to book in advance as it only holds 6 people and is very popular.
The views and walks are superb and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits

I have never been to such a place before. Amazing scenery, beautiful mountains, small river, rock art and a great accomodation. We stayed there 2 nights, it was a perfect location for hiing in the Drakensberg : many possible paths, different lengths and difficulties.
We were there last September, nights can still be fresh so we decided to light up a fire in the chimney. The camp is located at the end of the road, so there is no traffic, no light, it is very peaceful.
I would highly recommend this place!!

Unfortunately we didn't get the same chalets as the previous occasion. Despite having booked months beforehand, they were unable to allocate a room and even kept my sister waiting until 14.00 to enter when the chalets must have been clean. These chalets have also become rather expensive over the years. Nonetheless, the location is wonderful, and you can go on fantastic walks and eat either in the restaurant (not bad) or have braai's (BBQ), all fantastic. Take your own food etc as it is very pricey at the small store. It's also probably a good idea, in winter, to take some of your own wood for the wood burning fires if you are staying more than a night. It's pretty cold (very!) at night in winter, but potentially wonderful during the day. The type of place that one feels, as a writer, you'd like to hang out in. Make sure you get a chalet that has a potential view. They do occasionally have local dance groups coming in to dance, it's a shame they don't advertise them more so that local people could make more out of tourism.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a chalet with a view if possible...probably one of the more expensive chalets as s...

Located at the end of a long road (gate locked after 7 pm so plan your arrival) MOST of this camp's chalets are perched on the side of a lovely deep valley with terrific views -- be sure to get a view unit! -- #39 and #40 at the end of the road are excellent. We watched eland wander along the banks of the creek from our private porch. Some food servers very friendly, other staff very cold but food in general was good and dining room terrace is quite pleasant. Had a problem arriving in the dark without any clue where our assigned chalet was located, but once found, it was fantastic with a sunny kitchen with utensils, stove top, microwave and refrigerator -- could easily have cooked if we'd had the groceries. Hike to Main Caves was fantastic. Many good hikes in the area -- worth several days' stay. Look for the hyrax!

Room Tip: Some chalets have no view at all which would greatly diminish the enjoyment. Be sure to get one ove...

Spacious chalets in a lovely setting up in the Drakensbergen. The chalets are self-catering and have all the utensils you might need. Reception staff was a mixed bag during our stay. A smile often seemed to be optional. The location and the wonderful views more than make up for this though.

We were there during a quiet period. I can, however, see that during busy periods when all of the chalets are occupied, that the spacing of the cabins could pose a problem. It would have been nicer if the cabins would be spaced out a bit more.

Breathtaking scenery, comfortable self-catering chalets, and decent restaurant on site for those lazy times.
