“Nice camping just above the river where the elephants take their bath!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

The title says it all. Just a pity you have to stand up to look over the bushes to watch the spectacle, but hey...
Also the sneaking hut near the drinking hole is great. And lighted at night makes it a surrealistic Jurassic Park like experience. (It's not crowded with elephants always though.)

We stayed two nights at the Main Rest Camp of Addo. The first night we stayed in a chalet, which was super spacious and a definate step-up from the accomodations we had encountered at the Storm's River Mouth Nat'l park previously. Fully equipped kitchen, nice bath/shower and large lounge. The second night we had to move to a Rondovel, but it too, was very nice. It was, of course, much smaller, but very charming. A nice verandah looked over a watering hole where you occassionaly saw elephants. There was a communal kitchen for the rondovels with everything you needed, and you had a fridge on your porch. Each unit had its own bathroom. Check-in was easy and the staff was pleasant. I took a night-time game drive and my husband took a sunrise one. They were both wonderful and we saw many animals (the night drive afforded us the opportunity to see 15 hyenas and zebras chasing them away!) Driving through the park during the day was easy and enjoyable, and great for our three-year old daughter. We saw many animals, though no rhinos or cats. There is a plethora of wonderful birds as well. I recommend breaking for a while mid-day though, as the animals are more scarce then anyways. There is a restaraunt on site and a well equipped shop. A wonderful couple of days here.

We stayed at Domkrag - booking was fiddly through the South Africa National Parks website and it was quite expensive but when we arrived we realised it was worth it. Wonderful bedlinen and stunning bathrooms - everything was 5* standard. There was such a wonderful feeling of space (four adults in our group) especially when sat on the balcony looking at zebras in the distance.
The house was immaculately clean and its kitchen contained all you'd need for self-catering but we were rather lazy and ate at the restaurant in the camp (10min walk away). The restaurant is not of the highest quality but it is convenient and the staff are friendly.
No problems with mosquitos when we visited in Feb - a pleasant surprise!

Had a 2 night stay here in October and although the park is amazing, the lodgings are quite basic, but adequate.

Would we return and stay in the park, yes ... would we prefer the accommodation to be of a higher standard, yes.

With that said, as previously mentioned you are already in the park before outside guests and can explore before the park gets busy.

We were lucky enough to see lion (3), hyena, zebra, kudu, eland, ostrich, buffalo, dung beetles, tortoise, jackal, mongoose and loads of birds to name a few, not forgetting elephants galore. We saw nothing from the rondavels, however, they had, had so much rain the animals probably didn't have to venture to the water hole.

We stayed 2 nights in a rondavel. This accomodation is clean, has a great bed and a superb view on the lit waterhole. The first night we saw an elephant, great. The kitchen is very well equipped but you share it with others and it is not in your accomodation. You have your own big fridge and freezer on the terrace and of course braai facilities.
The other three nights we stayed in a cottage (number 15) and this was also very well equipped and excellent beds. You cannot see the lit waterhole but maybe it is a bit more convenient as you have your kitchen in the accomodation.
I would advise to do the shopping in Port Elizabeth as there are no big supermarkets nearby. We really enjoyed the gamedriving and even saw a rhino!
We also went for a lovely walk in the Zuurberg (18 km from the Park). Really nice and it took us 4 hours but we are not fast.

Addo Park is great. The system of the hospitality and accomodation works fine, the price they ask for access in all South African parks definitely too high. And increases constantly year by year.
The rudeness of most of the SAN park employess at the receptions is an issue. I can say it after visiting 8 SAN parks in South Africa.
The feeling of laziness and unwelcoming is something you can touch.
As for the rest, locations are always superb. We rented a chalet, with a great view over the valley, and a guaranteed sunrise/sunset spot.
Accomodation was large, high ceiling, simple but practical. With a long table and a well equipped kitchen in an intriguing open space.
The kitchen was also complete of dishes and all needed for a self cooking.
Two wooden hides allow visitors to have some game viewing.
In the Center West of South Africa Addo is the best place to do a safe and hearty safari.

We visited Addo for 3 nights at the beginning of our "Route 62" trip. It was our first time staying in this park (we are regulars to Kruger), we booked a Cottage (CO2) for the duration. It was big, clean, well equipped, had a super king size bed, a great bathroom. As always, in keeping with Sanparks accommodation which is fantastic value for money.
The shop is well stocked, although they did run out of Still Waters, some of the coldrinks and ice whilst we were there which in the peak season is unusual, but that was a minor glitch.
We thoroughly enjoyed the game viewing & bird watching, were lucky to have seen 4 of the "Big 5", the only exclusion being leopard. The ellies are the most entertaining and one can literally sit for hours & hours at the watering hole watching their antics!
A great experience and we will definitely be back in the future.
