“Lovely, but a few more accessories would help”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

We really loved this camp. It was unbelievably quiet, no buses, hordes of tourists, no shops, just birds, bush and peace. Unfortunately there was a power failure on our last night. This the park management cannot be blamed for, but they really could put some candles or lighting of some sort in for such occasions. And why do they think a cottage for two only needs two knives, two forks, two spoons, etc. the equipment really was a bit sparse. That said, it is a lovely place. We will take our own picnic set with next time, as well as some emergency lighting.

After going trough the entrance gate of Addo park you arrive at the cottages. Everything you need is present: kitchenette, bed and bathroom (good shower). Problem: only one bed, there's a sleeping couch but to small for adults. When you are 4 adults or have grown up kids, ask two beds!! The cottages are well situated at the park, go to the supermarket and prepare your own meal. Eating at your terrace: nice views!

Room Tip: Ask for a cottage numbers 13, 14 or 15: most recently build and biggest.

We had stayed in two different camps in the Kruger Park (Skukuza and Pretoriuskop) and we expected to find something similar in Matyholweni Camp. It was surprising to find out that our cottage in Addo Park was bigger and better equipped located in a beautiful place.
We booked a cottage for two people. The cottage was big, has a king size bed, a comfortable bathroom and a big balcony with barbecue and a table where we had lovely breakfast immersed in the nature. You do not go to the Addo park to watch TV but there is a television.
The Matyholweni Camp is in the Southern area of the Addo Park. It is 3 km from the N2. There are no restaurants or shops in this camp. There is a restaurant (and shop) in the Main Camp but it is 38 km far away from Matyholweni. You can go out to have dinner or to buy your own food outside. There are some restaurants close to the gate and a Spar (supermarket) in Colchester (crossing the N2).

Room Tip: I would stay again in Matyholweni camp. It is quieter than the Main camp and you can have dinner out...

We stayed in a safari tent overlooking a waterhole. With a timber floor and a balcony, this is a superior form of camping. It was a relaxing spot and the tent was roomy, comfortable and clean. The refrigerator was a little noisy. The amenities are nearby and well maintained and clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. Refreshing, clean pool. Plenty of wildlife to be seen on self drive excursions or join one of the organised tours.

We stayed in Addo park for 3 nights (2 at Matyholweni and 1 at the main camp). The cottages are cosy and clean, although some small creatures might join you as the cottages are right in the bushes!
We thought the accomodation at the main camp better suitable because closer to the interesting spots (waterholes) of the park, pool access and closer to the restaurant for meal breaks.
Spectacular starry nights!

Receptionist so much more pleasant and helpful than in Kruger or Hluhluwe parks.
There were just the two of us but we had a family cottage (FA3) as that was all that was left.
It was very peaceful. BBQ was good and we so enjoyed our meals on the balcony.
There is nowhere to walk really from cottage. We used our own car all of the time in the park and thouroughly enjoyed it even though we had jsut visited Kruger/Hluhluwe/St Lucia parks.
We did have breakfast at main camp one day which was ok. The main camp looked very good - especially the viewing areas. As it was the quiet season I would be tempted to stay at main camp rather than Matyholweni but as I have no first hand experience of accommodation it might be wrong move.

We stayed 2 nights in one of the Cottages at the rest camp. Even though it's a good hour and a half away from the main camp, it's in a wonderful location. Isolate, tranquil and absolutely stunning. The cottage was pretty large with a lovely little balcony and the braai area. Bed comfy, bathroom huge and clean and a kitchenette with everything you need. The rules are understandably quite strict and even though we took extremely good care, we managed to encounter a toast thief - Vervet monkey camping on our roof for ages waiting for us to turn around for a split second to steal some food. So please take special care at all times!!! We were extremely lucky to see all of the animals with exception of the lions. An absolutely wonderful place!!
