We stayed at the Olympic for 5 nights during the first week in August. We go to Wildwood Crest every year, but we usually stay at a different hotel. We booked the reservation later than usual, in June, and this property had available rooms for the time we needed. This property also ran twenty to thirty dollars less expensive than other "comparable" properties for the same type of room and same location. This worried me a little when I booked... but overall we had a pleasant stay. And I've concluded that it's the little things that cause this price difference... like lack of updating, not having a 24 hour desk staff, no A/C in the bedroom... things like that.
The location of this hotel is perfect...oceanfront (on the bike path)... just cross the bike path and you are on the beach. The beach in all the Wildwoods is very wide... a long walk to the ocean. But we don't mind that... you are never on top of your neighbor. Plenty of room to throw the football and fly a kite. Just bring the beach cart to tote all your stuff and kids' toys! This hotel is also adjacent to the library... a plus if you enjoy reading on a rainy day.
Staff was pleasant both on phone and in person. One drawback, however, is that there is not a 24 hour desk staff. The front desk closes during the overnight. One one of our nights, a rowdy group was making lots of noise. They were banging the railings and screaming. If it had gone on much longer I would have called the police. It woke up our 7 year old, and I had to deal with getting her back to sleep. We prefer to stay at properties where there is a 24 hour desk to deal with problems like this, and to deal with emergencies in the room... like plumbing problems and such. So if you stay here, you are on your own till morning.
On the ground level is the office and the restaurant- which also has a walk-up window for easy access from the beach. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. We ate lunch there on our first day, and the food was very good. Also enjoyed the 50's decor.
The first floor has the pool with nice size kiddie pool. There is also a patio area with two BBQ grills, which worked, but my husband did have to keep working with the knobs to get it working.
We were told that the pool is heated, but it felt a little cool to us. Regardless, our 7 year old enjoyed it. They do need to replace a bunch of the lounge chairs by the pool. Quite a few had majorly broken slats.. could be dangerous if someone sat down and did not notice.
Rooms begin on the 1st floor as well. And then I believe there were 2 more floors of rooms above us. Our room was a 2 room efficiency, oceanview and overlooked the pool. It was very clean, but a little outdated. We had a table and chairs, full size fridge, microvave, burners and sink... everything worked fine. There were two TV's... one in the living/dining area and one in the bedroom. The bathroom did show signs of wear... a little rust in certain areas, but nothing we couldn't deal with. Water in the shower could go between hot and cold quickly... but that is typical of many hotels here. The bedroom had two queen size beds... a little on the hard side, but we could sleep. The only bad thing was that the A/C was only in the living room... so we had to keep our bedroom door open to get the air in. The week we were there was not exceptionally hot, but I think we may have been uncomfortable sleeping if it had been a hot, humid week.
Parking spots are tight ... as at most Wildwood Crest hotels.. so plan accordingly and come back from the boardwalk before everyone else does if you want to get the easy spots on the outside, as opposed to underneath the building. (We drove to the boardwalk... this property would be a bit far of a walk to it). You could also trolley to it... trolley stops right in front of the hotel. But again, make sure you beat everyone back or you'll be waiting for a trolley all night.
Overall, it was a pleasant stay. The price cut from what we're used to was nice too... but I'm not sure I'm willing to give up on the extras... especially the A/C in the bedroom and the 24 hour desk. We'd stay here again if our usual hotel choices are booked, but probably not otherwise. But if you're looking for a property that's a little less expensize, and you don't mind some of these things, then this is a decent property. We had no problems with cleanliness during our stay, and it does have some pluses like its location and on-site restaurant.
