“Missed the Mark”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2010

While we enjoyed our stay in lovely Spring Lake, the mattress in our room was lumpy and saggy, which really affected our comfort level. Don't know if that was true of all the rooms but I'd ask how old the mattress is before reserving! Our room was also incredibly small with no dresser whatsoever so we had to live out of our suitcases for 4 nights. The owners, who were very pleasant, never asked about our comfort level or we would have told them.

We are so sorry for your discomfort and for our lack of attention in asking about your comfort level. We are new owners and are learning each and every day. Thank you for pointing out the fact that there was no dresser in your room. We didn't realize the previous owner had removed it. We were able to rectify the situation in a matter of minutes so it would have benefited both of us had you told us about the missing furniture. We've also replaced all of our mattresses with new ones this year. As for the size of the room, yes, it's small, but does have a fireplace and is discounted from the rate of some of the other rooms because of its small size. We hope you'll decide to visit us again and check out our improvements. If you do, please identify yourself so we may compensate you in some way.

Everything about my stay at Ashling Cottage made me want to return, and I will. Its location in Spring Lake is unbeatable. It is two short blocks from a gorgeous beach. The staff and atmosphere at the cottage are also excellent. They are solicitous without being intrusive. At many other B & B's, I know that this can sometimes be a difficult balance. The staff also does a wonderful job maintaining spotless grounds and clean rooms.

This is a beautiful and charming B&B, where no detail has been overlooked by the eager to please owners, Linda & Peter. The rooms are decorated very tastefully, but not overdone. Ours had even had its own fireplace (note to self:book again for the winter season). The location is superb- one block from the beach and two blocks from Spring Lake. The B&B provides you with bicycles, beach chairs, umbrellas and beach passes, for starters. When you return later in the afternoon, they have a tasty assortment of snacks and port wine. What a nice touch, indeed. In the morning, they make a full traditional sit down breakfast that was delicious. We were fortunate to sample their home made almond scones and freshly made blueberry pancakes. Delicious! The town is lovely, with no fast food joints or loud bars. For that, there are plenty of other towns on the Jersey Shore. All in all, a most romantic setting for a nearby getaway. Thanks for a terrific stay and for sure, we'll be back.

There is a new owner to this place - Peter and his wife - top-notch folks who are definitely looking to please. We have special dietary restrictions - they went out of their way to provide for us what we needed. Place is clean as a whistle. We stayed in one of the cottages and were very pleased. It's private and well designed. Only one block from the ocean and one block from SPring Lake. I couldn't be more pleased and I'd recommend it to anyone.
