“The pefect getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2011

Firstly as a guest that stayed over July 4th weekend and witness to the unpleasantness with the individual, I would like to address the prior review. The only screaming that occurred came from the guest on the last morning while the other guests were enjoying a quiet breakfast. I never heard the owner raise his voice during the conversation, which related to checkout policy. In addition, my wife I used the B&B’s beach chairs, umbrella, and bikes without any issues the entire weekend. The owner (Matthew) simply told us where to find them and that we were free to help ourselves.

For my wife and I this was our first trip away from our 10 month old twins and it couldn't have been more relaxing. The owners were friendly, the house was comforting, the breakfast delicious, and even when it rained we spent a better portion of the day drinking wine and reading on the front porch. Coming from the NY area, we loved how slow and relaxing the town was. We can’t wait to go back!

MISREPRESENTED!! He told us before we booked that the beach was 4 blocks away, that we would have beach chairs, umbrella, beach badges. Worse stay of my life. Turns out the beach was a 30 minute walk with nothing else around. The owner conrtolled everything and had the chairs hidden, beach towels hidden, bikes hidden (never even saw where they were). Every time we wanted something the owner would go get it. Our bedroom door was broke (it never locked); front door squeeky (we were right next to door); children running all over without any concern of hours. He told us when we checked in "there was no curfew" We are adults paying $320.00 a night -- why would there be a curfew? On last day he told us beach badges were not allowed to be used as we needed to check out and he would not allow us to have access to dressing room or bathroom!!!! He yelled at me and screamed at me! His umbrella broke on us at the beach and would not shut. It was a miserable stay. It felt so uncomforable I was horrified and we paid $640.00 for 2 nights. I WILL NEVER COME BACK. DON"T EVER STAY AT THIS PLACE!!

As owners of the Villa Park House, we want to thank our guests from the Fourth of July weekend that alerted us to the recent reviews posted on Trip Advisor. For the first time in our eight years of running the VPH, we had to call in police to protect our guests, our staff and our family from a volatile woman during the holiday weekend. Following a two-night stay, a guest suddenly began yelling at check out time. My husband very calmly tried to diffuse the situation as the rest of us backed away. When the woman screamed again, he backed away and called the police. Unfortunately, the woman was in the front hall, blocking the entrance and sending shrieks throughout the house. Spring Lake BnB’s are intimate inns in a very small shore town and apparently this was not a good fit for this guest. We have been in the hospitality business for decades and understand you cannot please all the people all the time. However, when someone lets out unexpected, hostile and threatening screams, we had no choice but to call police. This has been an unfortunate and disturbing incident for all to witness. Thank you to the guests that supported us and our decision. Spring Lake Police has the full report citing this person having to be removed. Legally, she is entitled to her opinion but NOT to incite a slander campaign filled with false accusations.

My husband and I completely booked Villa Park House for family and friends in town for our wedding. Matthew and Dara were incredibly accommodating and easy to work with. Matthew catered our rehearsal dinner with food from his restaurant, which got rave reviews from our guests. Matthew made us delicious breakfast both mornings, and we all enjoyed our accommodations.

I was looking for a place to stay while visiting friends, which also happened to be my birthday, so decided on a B&B, which we stay in quite often. The Villa Park House was one of the best B&B's that we have stayed in. Matthew and Dara are wonderful Innkeepers, making you feel right at home and very friendly. The room we stayed in was great and the breakfast was wonderful. It was very easy to get to by following the directions and easy walk to the ocean, which I miss since I now like in Minnesota. Next time we are in Spring Lake, I know exactly where I would stay.

Villa Park is a charming b & b a few scenic blocks from the beautiful Spring Lake beach. From the minute you see the colorfully painted front porch with its comfy wicker chairs you will feel at home. The inn's period decor is appealing without being overly fussy. The owners, Matthew and Dara Schmid, are generous with rides (for those who, like us, arrive by train), beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, bikes, etc. But what sets this inn apart for frequent b & b travelers like us are the breakfasts. Matthew, a graduate of the prestigious CIA, offers a selection of dishes that are big treats but quite different from the carb- and sugar-fest one does tend to encounter at most b & b's. We will long remember his creative breakfast wraps as well as the delicious fruit and juices. His top-level experience at the Waldorf Astoria and the Rainbow Room shine through in the simple yet elegant breakfast service, either in the dining room or on the porch. It's all about attention to detail. You can't go wrong at Villa Park!

We've never been to Spring Lake and we have to say we were wonderfully surprised. Spring Lake was not overly crowded, not commercial, not overly touristy, not full of big hotels, or motels; gorgeous beach, great boardwalk with nothing commercial on it; beautiful homes, wide streets, and quaint shopping. Everything felt fresh, safe and clean; a great residential neighborhood.

The Villa Park House was wonderful from the time we arrived, until the time we left. Matthew, the house owner, was outside when we pulled up late Friday night, and helped us with where to park, a quick tour and a nice conversation of what to do in the area. We stayed in the suite 8 & 9. Perfect for having a kid or two with you. The kid slept in a separate room that had a twin bed with trundle; his own tv/vcr, ceiling fan, dresser, full window, big closet and comfy big sitting chair. Our room (9) had a large brass bed, dresser, ceiling fan, two full size windows, closet and a full bathroom for the suite. We also really loved the color of our room, soothing and comfortable.

Breakfast was made to order (of any egg selection) along with a few choices of an omelet or wrap, fresh fruit, and yogurt parfait. Eg: The ham and cheese omelet had five different types of Colby cheese; the wrap had salmon, greens, capers, creme cheese, light and fluffy eggs. There was always a choice of meat and Matthew's version of homefries--- delicious. There is nothing worse then going to a B & B and not liking the breakfast or not having enough to eat.... you will not have to worry about this at the Villa Park House, because Matthew is a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and you can guarantee your breakfast will be awesome! Of course coffee and tea, and from the mouth of the Kid, "This is the best grapefruit juice I've ever had!"

There are some bikes to borrow, beach passes, beach towels, umbrellas, & chairs! A great wrap around porch for relaxing with a cup of tea, reading or dining for breakfast. Matthew is very friendly and knowledgeable on where everything is in town.

This was the perfect place for our last minute weekend getaway. Thank you Matthew for a fantastic stay! We definitely plan to return.

What a beautiful residence, every detail is attended to. Mat and Darra are wonderful hosts and the staff is attentive to your needs. Whether it be bikes to ride, chairs and towels for the beach, directions, dinner suggestions they accommodated you. In my mind a Bed and Breakfast is about quiet charm and relaxation, and that is what we received, we returned home feeling rested and renewed. We hope to return again and again.
