The wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary with an overnight stay in Spring Lake. After speaking with the staff at our B&B, we opted to dine at Bistro by the Beach. A great choice!
This elegantly casual BYOB restaurant offers fresh, prepared to order meals featuring top notch ingredients.
My wife started with a special salad for the evening: organic arugula with perfectly ripe, fresh strawberries, toasted sunflower seeds and peach/lavender vinaigrette. The salad was topped with crumbled Humboldt Fog cheese, a wonderful California goat cheese with just the right amount of tang. The generous portion could have easily served the two of us.
For my starter, I chose the beer and herb “braised” clams. What was delivered was a delicious bowlful of little necks and the broth they had been cooked in. One of two glitches in the evening…the promised crostini did not arrive with the clams. Once we reminded our server about this, she remedied the situation and delivered two sides of freshly grilled bread slices to our table. The bread was still soft enough to be an effective sop for the clam broth, but had a nice “smoky” flavor from the grilling.
Our entrees included one each from the daily specials list and the standing menu.
Ann chose the special, a piece of fluke served with jersey tomato and crab salad. The presentation was visually appealing. The fish had been broiled and shaped into a ring which sat atop four thick wedges of perfectly ripe, local tomato topped with a generous portion of crab meat.
Unfortunately, while nicely seasoned, the fish was a tad overcooked and a little dry. Our guess is that was due to trying to cook the flesh firm enough to hold its ring shape. We’d suggest the chef find another presentation that allows for a better preparation of this delicate fish.
I chose the lobster ravioli with sautéed greens and scampi sauce from the regular menu as my entrée. The house made pasta was stuffed with a mousse-like lobster and ricotta filling. They were topped with sautéed spinach and napped in a buttery white wine sauce and served with a four or five shrimp that were perfectly cooked.
We were quite full and didn’t require dessert but observed the ice cream truffle sampler served to the table next to us. It looked great!
The staff at Bistro by the Sea is friendly and accommodating. We saw the chef come out and speak with one guest who was a vegan and together they came up with some items to meet her dietary preferences.
