From June 7th-11th 2012 my friends and I stayed at the Doubletree for an anime convention. I cannot comment on price as we are con staff and the convention pays for our room. We've been working at this location for several years, always around the same time in June, and I can't say we've had any bad experiences in the hotel. One year when we arrived the room was dirty, the cleaning staff hadn't gotten to it, and the front desk gave us another, better, room. Other than this incident, the rooms, and entire hotel, are pretty clean.
Internet is only free in the lobby, you have to pay to have it in your room. Again, I cannot comment on price as I never purchase internet in a hotel room.
There are only 4 elevators in the building, and during our convention, they get a workout. It can be scary at times since everyone is trying to cram into them, but the weight limit won't allow the elevator to move, it will try and will dip below the floor, but level itself again before attempting to close the doors. This 'dance' continues until a few people get off allowing the elevator to function with the proper weight.
The location is similar to that of an industrial/business park, there is nothing around. Everything is within driving distance. The front desk does have a variety of takeout menus, all you have to do is ask.
There is a restaurant inside the hotel, which I am not too thrilled with. Don't take that the wrong way, the food is pretty good, I've eaten there a few times, but they are only open in the morning for a few hours, and the staff doesn't seem too friendly. And there seems to be a language barrier with one waiter. They did assist us on the day we were leaving this year and allowed our group of 7 people to take over 2 tables before they had a large group come in for a lunch buffet. Why book the entire restaurant, which is pretty small, and turn away customers makes no sense to me, but I thank them for helping us out.
Next to the restaurant is a bar, where they will check ID, especially during our con where there are people of all ages. The staff in the bar seem to be nicer than those in the restaurant, and the food is really good.
The one good thing about the location, is that the exhibit/convention building is located behind the Doubletree and they are connected by a covered path that crosses a small creek. You don't have to drive to get to the con, just take the path.
This particular weekend we had an unexpected event take place. It happened around 3:30am on the 9th. We found out afterward that someone had pulled a fire extinguisher off of the wall, which apparently signals the fire dept and possibly the hotels alarms, and proceeded to spray it up and down the hallway near the elevators on the 4th floor. Which was our floor. Thankfully there was no fire, but the fire alarm was going off. I'm not sure who he was but someone was walking down the hallway banging on the room doors telling people to get out. Myself and a friend were sleeping, and the only ones in our room at the time. Having never been in this type of situation before, and truly believing there was a fire, I must say the evacuation went smoothly. On our way out, no one on my side of the hotel was running, pushing or freaking out, everyone was calmly and quickly exiting the building.
I only mention this mainly because of how quickly people left the hotel. There are no fire drills when you stay in a hotel, and how many people actually look for the fire stairs?
Overall, there are pros and cons. And regardless of the location, I enjoy staying at the Doubletree during our convention weekend, and am always glad the staff has rooms here. As stated above, I cannot comment on price, so I'm not sure what the value would be for others.
Best part, as always, the yummy cookies the front desk gives you when you check in. :D
