My husband and I spent two nights at this hotel and were pleasantly surprised except for their parking situation. I called the hotel two days prior to arrival to ask for a room on the top floor which would give some type of view of New York City. I was assured that there would be no problem reserving the room and it would be added to my reservation; however, I was told the hotel does not have the most perfect view of New York. I assured the young woman that any view would be better than no view. After a mix up at the front desk, we were given a beautiful, large room with as much of a view as the hotel accommodates. The bed was extremely comfortable and the fridge and coffeemaker were appreciated.
For the most part, the staff was very friendly however we did have a problem with the valet. There is only one valet on duty whether one room or every room has guests. Due to a business call running very long we were extremely late meeting another client for dinner. When we got downstairs the valet was no where in sight. There was a man standing there, obviously waiting for the valet to return, wearing a sour expression. We made no secret that we were very late and were extremely anxious to locate the valet who eventually appeared . The sour man, who was next in line, asked that his car be parked and acting totally oblivious to our total discomfort began to discuss with the valet additional cars that would be arriving, later that night a]and the next day, all under this man's umbrella. Certainly this conversation could have waited 5 additional minutes which would allow the valet to retrieve our car but instead this horrible little man turned on me and nastily told me to "Calm Down.". I was horrified and amazed that someone would be so incredibly rude. (It is people like that who continually give New Jersey's its horrible rap.) More amazingly was the valet's reaction. The valet turned to me and just as nastily as the little man said "He was here first!." With that, to add insult to injury, the little man pulled out money from his pocket to give to the valet and then they both entered the hotel with the little man's arm around the valet's shoulder! We stood there with our mouth's open, more in amazement, then in horror. About a minute later the valet ran out and retrieved our car. The entire unfortunate scene was not something easily forgotten and after explaining to my client what happened, the incident has been repeated over and over again.
The hotel needs to be more forthcoming as to their parking situation. When we inquired about parking the hotel staff told me there was free parking in their lot. Unfortunately I assumed the lot was at the hotel as most parking is. You do have the option of parking more than a block away on the top level of a parking deck next to another hotel. This is their free parking. Or you may choose the valet parking at $10 a day. Your auto is housed in a garage next to the hotel but can only be parked by the valet. Since it poured for the entire time we were there, the thought of parking on that deck and then splashing through puddles was not something that interested us.
Although the gift shop was dismantled there were still many shopping options since the back door of the hotel leads to an open mall where there are a variety of restaurants from fast food to sit down. There is also a hairdresser , jeweler, post office, travel agent as well as Dress Barn, etc. Also, the hotel is in the Meadowlands which has every type of shopping imaginable within a few miles.
