We used to consider Bistro 55 one of the local "go to" places to eat and have been there over a dozen times, but recently the quality of the food has fallen off so much it's hard to keep this place on our list. Our last two visits were so uneven in everything from drink service to dessert.
On both occasions when we ordered our drinks from the waitress it took such a long time to fill the order, and I am not kidding, there was no one sitting at the bar and the place was half empty. Now the first visit they didn't bring one of our group their beer and it took two reminders to get it and even then it didn't arrive until the middle of our appetizer course, with no explanation of why it took so long. The second time we were there my wife's white wine had a piece of cork floating in it. The cork piece was no big deal and we just fished it out ourselves. But when we looked in the water bottle we were given there was a dead bug at the bottom of it. Disgusting.
As for the food, our first visit we ordered the appetizer platter. The Calamari was rubbery and the only hot item on it was the dip, which I'm sure was microwaved. When our entrees came they too were cooled down too much and had lost a lot of their flavor.
Our most recent visit was for their New Years Eve special dinner and forgiving the wine and water issues that started out well. The appetizers arrived and were delicious but when we got to the entree's things started to go south again. I had ordered the Chateaubriand and Lobster Tail. The Chateaubriand was cooked perfectly, (they didn't serve it with any reduction sauce) but it was COLD. The Lobster Tail was cool as well, and for their presentation they remove it from the shell and place it on top so it's easier to eat, but they did such a poor job that I was picking shell bits out of my mouth on every other bite. My wife's fish dish was good and the rice was well cooked but the Roasted Root Vegetables consisted only of potato's and one piece of another root vegetable, so it was clear they didn't prepare this side correctly.
We had pre-ordered our entire dinner when we first sat down and so I was expecting the White Russian Tiramisu for dessert. I was informed that they had run out and so had to order another item. I ordered the Hot Chocolate Lava Cake. Well as we were finishing our dessert, I saw that the couple one table away who arrived a good 30 minutes after us and ordered much later then we did, received the White Russian Tiramisu. So either our waitress got my order in late, or the kitchen had no idea what it did have and what it didn't. Bad as that was, the "Hot" Chocolate Lava Cake was even worse. It was simply a mini bundt cake that wasn't hot, and so had no "lava" inside it and even if it was warmed up it still wouldn't be a Hot Chocolate Lava Cake.
As I said in the beginning this used to be one of our favorite places to go, but with a kitchen performing the way this one is now and the service hit or miss, we won't be back here with our friends anytime soon. They fire dishes too soon, they sit too long, and it's just become too much of a crap shoot what you'll get. I just hope they get their act together in 2012.
