For anyone who has traveled regularly and is accustomed to the amenities and service offered in a 4 star hotel I cannot imagine how people have rated this property 4 star. It is clean, the staff seems to be well trained (based upon a single stay), and the appearance of the hotel is middling. By middling I mean nothing special. Typical of what one would expect in a middle level business hotel. The rooms are very standard (typical of a 3 star rating) with nothing "extra" or what one would expect to see in a 4 star hotel.
I booked a room on the club level (room 686 on the 6th floor). For savvy travelers, who have stayed in Westins and or Hiltons, it is expected that the club level is a key access floor which typically sports a private lounge where you can sit, meet and relax in a quiet area outside of your guest room. The club lounge is also typically staffed by a concierge, offers a paper, light snacks, beverages throughout the day and evening, and a continental breakfast served in the lounge. The club level is obviously a more expensive room than non club level rooms.
However, at this Westin, the “club level lounge” is a cubbyhole in the wall that is apparently only open on the weekends although the room rate is the same as when the cubbyhole is open. In addition, no newspaper is available to any guest except for purchase though the gift shop. How cheap!
After inquiring as to the location of the club lounge and finding that there was no lounge nor continental breakfast available on the club floor I was offered a coupon for a discount at the restaurant. In a four star hotel I should never have had to ask, this should have been provided and explained at check in or even better at the time I booked the room.
The maintenance at this property is lax and Management is obviously not engaged or corporate does not provide adequate budget to take care of normal maintenance issues. For example, the club level key access reader in one of the elevators is broken, and according to the staff, has been broken for some time. This means if you get on the wrong elevator you are destined to ride the elevator up and down trying to access the club floor until you give up. At this point the very apologetic and kind front desk staff will walk you to the elevator and call one of the other cars. Once you know one elevator is out of service you know to wait for the working elevators to arrive on the ground to access your room. Unfortunately, if the broken elevator is already on the ground floor it is impossible to call a working car until the broken car has left for another floor. Further, our room had a warped bathroom door that made a painfully loud grating and squeaking noise every time it was opened or closed waking the other person in the room at night. I was told that this has also been an issue for some time and was offered a change of rooms. However, after stowing all of our stuff and at 11:30 at night, we had no energy to re-pack; change rooms; and unpack again.
If I noticed these issues during a one night stay, it is inevitable that other persistent problems exist and are not being addressed. (Where there is smoke there is fire).
In all, my biggest problem is that this property is not as advertised, is over rated, and effectively a bait and switch on the unsuspecting traveler. If the hotel had been rated “3 star” I would have agreed and had no complaints, except that even three star hotels typically have a newspaper and free in room internet where this Westin charges a hefty price.
