My boyfriend and I stayed here about a year ago (Spring 2004) and loved it then. That stay was during the off season, so the prices were nice and low, and we were in town rather spontaneously and needed a place to stay. We just sortof stumbled onto this place and ended up being very pleased...especially with the staff who were very helpful and personable. They made sure we had everything we needed and also made sure that we knew that they were available at any time for anything to make our stay comfortable.
Well, for that reason we came back to stay here again this summer of 2005. Of course the summer rates are much higher, not the highest rates in town but certainly not the lowest (we payed about $170 total for a queen size non smoking bedroom)...but there are certain things about this motel that justify the price. The main draw about this motel, at least for my boyfriend and I who aren't partiers and don't readily tolerate loud children, is their emphasis on quiet and respect. They have very strict rules about noise, for example no voices louder than speaking voices after 11 pm, no mass gatherings outside of rooms, no more than 2 adults and 3 children in a room, no one in the pool after 9, etc. If you are the average traveler who likes their quiet time, these rules are no problem to adhere to and make the place nice and relaxing. They were actually a big draw for us.
The motel is great in other ways too. As I said, the staff was very personable again this time. The lobby is small but is filled with brochures about the area and its many attractions. The motel is very clean and attractive on the outside and also in the rooms themselves. The interior of the rooms are similar to a chain motel, so nothing extremely charming, but very comfortable and accessible. They have small refrigerators. The bathroom was roomy and the shower, though rather small, was nice because you could adjust the temperature of the water by a knob that has actual temperature settings (for example, I turned it to 75 degrees) which is a nice touch. The motel has a simple layout with rooms on a first floor and a second floor...there is plenty of off-street parking in lots both in front and in back of the arm of rooms. The pool is right out front and looks very inviting, though we never got a chance to use it. Instead, we used our complimentary beach passes (which you can acquire even on the day you check out if you want to use the beach that day) which are good for Jenkinson's Beach about a quarter mile away. You can certainly walk to the beach, though we drove b/c in mid week we could find parking there, which features plenty of eateries and such (check out Lighthouse Italian Ice which is right on the corner by the beach entrance). There is a nice long boardwalk along the beach, and you can swim in the water until 5:30 (and, just as a note, the need for $ or beach pass disappears after about 3:30 or so if you happen to go to the beach later).
All in all, Surfside was a very nice place to stay, so long as you don't come to the Shore to party all night. If you are looking for a quiet, friendly atmosphere, you are sure to find it here at Surfside.
