The restaurant in Pitman that we intended to visit on Monday was closed as were the others under consideration on Broadway. Having passed J.G. Cook's Carolina Blue Smoke House and Taproom, we decided to check it out. We were hesitant since this location over the years had various owners and names, all of which were unremarkable. One look at the menu and the décor indicated that this was worth trying. We were not disappointed.
The menu offered not only dinners but sandwiches. The coconut encrusted scallop appetizers were quite good. The loaded nachos, a very large portion, were a far cry from the sumptuous ones served in Texas and New Mexico. The New York pork strip was worth the visit. It was superbly grilled, moist and tender. Side dish portions were large and intended to be shared. The grilled zucchini and the herbed risotto were excellent. Desserts were large and meant to be shared. The mud pie was good and served soft enough to eat. Our guests liked the cheese cake. The wine list was reasonably priced, including wines by the glass, and listed very decent wines. Service was excellent. The rest of the staff was, also, professional and accommodating.
Many times one would like to have a nice meal but wear jeans or shorts. Carolina Blue provides such a unique setting.
The next time I am in this area of South Jersey, I plan to dine again at Carolina Blue.
