After reading mostly positive reviews, we booked a room for two nights in August. We chose the "older" rooms (based on the reservation clerk's advice since she suggested that they were larger than the newer rooms. We were not impressed.
Our problems were all related to the maintenance (or lack thereof) of the room. Let me also preface this by stating that we were contacted by the Manager to offer a cash adjustment after our stay but after 6 weeks and numerous emails left unanswered, we assume he has withdrawn his offer.
The armoire in the room had no handle and we had to pry it open. Once we opened it, we could not close it and the door swung open. We finally jammed it shut and lived out of our suitcases since there was no other place for our clothes. The toilet "ran" the entire time we were there. Each time we used it, we had to lift the top and adjust the chain. The switchplate on the wall did not have a cover (so we did not use it) and the reading light mechanism came loose each time we tried to turn it on. There was a huge swatch of wallpaper border missing from the corner. There was no wand on the blinds so we were never able to let in light unless we lifted them up completely (and the view was exhaust fans and another building very close). You might wonder why we put up with all of this during our stay...we just wanted to use the room and did not want our access compromised by maintenance people servicing these many repairs. The rest of the rooms were booked so we could not switch rooms either.
We assumed a boutique hotel would check these features prior to announcing that the room was ready.
On a positive note, the location was very close to the beach and we enjoyed the upstairs front porch as well as the common area on the top floor. The breakfast was good with fresh food and our dinner was very very good. Definitely try the restaurant!
We have stayed in numerous other boutique hotels and would not include the Majestic in that category.
