“A Last Resort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2008

We were looking for a last minute get-away during the last week of New Jersey's summer season, so we didn't have the luxury of being particular about our accommodations. We knew the property was older and didn't have high expectations. That being said, we remained optimistic. Our room was small, but appeared clean. What we found as we settled into the room causes us to agree with BeachTraveler111 (we may have been in the same room)...stains on the bathroom wall, toilet bowl and underside of bed spread; blanket crumpled in the corner and rather dirty and the owner tried to refund only half of our beach tag deposit upon check-out. Continental breakfast consisted of coffee and sugar (no creamer, donuts or tea). Maid service was non-existent, but the owner emptied our trash can and gave us fresh towels when we asked for them. We were told his housekeepers had left on short notice. If we had paid $89 a night, these short-falls may have been easier to overlook, but at $159 + tax per night, a bit more attention should be given to the guests. The pool was rather small, but clean and the big wrap-around porch provided a nice place to relax. The weather was perfect during our 3-night stay, so we didn't spend too much time in the hotel. If that hadn't been the case, this review would probably be much more negative. If you need to get to the beach and can't find anywhere else to stay, we would reluctantly recommend the Georgian Hotel for an acceptable place to sleep and shower...truly a last resort!

Our room was given away before we arrived – even after we received a confirmation number from the owner, assurances that we could arrive anytime after 3 PM, and a voicemail message with our specific room number.

The owner was rude and completely unapologetic about rectifying the situation. After over an hour of huffing and puffing and generally making us feel that this was somehow our fault, he ungraciously offered us another room, which was barely big enough to fit a double bed and extremely shabby (don't be fooled by the "virtual tour" and pictures on the web site -- the room we saw barely resembled anything in those images). We dropped off our bags in the room, but then immediately returned to the front desk to say that while we appreciated his efforts, we felt that he owed us an apology for his bad manners. His response: “You don’t have to stay here. I’ll cancel your reservation.” We accepted and immediately left, even though we had to drive over two hours to get home and it was past midnight by this time.

Wouldn’t you know it, we just found out that we’ve been charged the full amount for two nights – over $400! We’re disputing the charges with the help of the credit card company and have filed a complaint with NJ’s Better Business Bureau.

There are surely plenty of Ocean City hotels that offer decent rooms and friendly service. The Georgian Hotel isn’t one of them. It doesn’t deserve your business – it shouldn’t even be in business.

Where do I start? Our room was disgusting. There were brown smears on the bathroom wall, inside the toilet, and on the underside of the bedspread! The spare blanket was balled up on the floor in the corner, presumably unwashed. The room was very tiny and dingy. My husband, my son and I were forced to share a double bed because the hotel was not able to produce the cot they had promised me when I made the reservation (and worse yet, the front desk staff was rude and unapologetic about this). We had to hang towels in the window because the blinds did not cover the window. There was inadequate parking and we parked on the street. The "large pool" was a joke - it was anything but large. Also, the rates on the website are completely dishonest - we were actually charged almost twice as much and we were told it was "discount." The "coffee and donuts" that are promised in the lobby at 8 AM were nowhere to be found - and the office was conveniently closed the entire morning. When I checked out and returned the beach tags, the staff member tried to reimburse me for only half the amount of the deposit for the tags. The ONLY good thing I can say about the place is that the location was okay - but still, at a 3 block walk to the beach, it was certainly not worth the nearly $200 nightly rate we paid. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

This hotel is really gross. The rooms are very small, smell and the bathrooms are just so filthy. If you insist on going here, make sure you bring your own towels, bedding and a pair of flip-flops to wear in the shower. Oh and an air-fresher. All those things will help it be a bearable stay.

On the positive side, the pool is decent and usually not crowded. Also, its in a great location. Although overpriced for what you get, its not a bad price for a hotel room in Ocean City.

Location was important for us, and this hotel's location was very convenient for us. It's an easy walk to all restaurants and the boardwalk. The front porch was nice for relaxing. Everything worked fine in our room and it seemed as clean as it could be for an older facility. We stayed three nights and enjoyed our time there. The front desk staff is very friendly as mentioned previously.

However, our room was extremely small as mentioned by above posters. We had two doubles in our room and they were literally up against three of the walls with only about two feet between the two beds and at the foot of the beds. There was no closet, so the only place to hang our clothes was on a doorknob! On the second day of our stay, we did not receive any maid service. The bathroom had a ""fresh" toilet tissue roll that looked like it had been dropped in water, then dried out for us to use when the current roll was used up. Parking is tight and no one monitors the "compact car only," so mid-size and mini-vans were parked in two spots.

In short, we were satisfied, but there are other hotels that are comparable price and might be worth checking before booking at this hotel. This quaint hotel could be greatly improved with more attention to "service after the sale" or quality control in maid service.

We LOVED this hotel....charming, cute and clean from top to bottom...with lots of style and personality!

My wife and I were looking for a relaxing get-a-way without spending a fortune and we found it at the Georgian.

From the minute we arrived the staff was friendly and honestly wanted to help us navigate the town. We found a lovely restaurant nearby and retired to a room filled with charm and warmth.

We walked to the beach the following day and hope to return next year when the weather is more inviting for a swim. Brrrr!

Special thanks to our friend Frank who suggested the Georgian.

I would just like to say that I stayed at this hotel a few years ago and EVERY complaint that these people are saying is true DESPITE the management's responses that I am sure they are posting to try to keep themselves afloat. I have NEVER seen a more disgusting hotel in my life. I would not let my dog stay there. The bathroom was disgusting. The toilet had skid marks, the shower was BLACK with mold and the comforter/chairs all had whitish stains on them that I am sure would come off with some scrubbing. I would advise my worst enemy to go somewhere else to stay. I even ended up with some kind of rash after sleeping in the bed there. Everyone it is WORTH the extra money to go somewhere else. This place is diseased!

  • Liked — Nothing it was disgusting it doesn't matter how close you are to the beach when the place you are staying at looks like this place did
  • Disliked — EVERYTHING the black showe,r the skid marks in toilet, the stains, the staff who promised us a clean room, the rash I got
