“Good room, inexpensive”

I had qualms about staying here after reading some of the other reviews, but my room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The neighborhood seemed OK as well. It is a steep climb to the bus stop, but hey, I could use the exercise. It is expenseive to get to and from the Newark airport - about $50-$60 each way. And the front desk said the taxi was the only way to get there. For an inexpensive alternative to midtown Manhatten, this place fills the bill adequately

“Don't stay here! The room was filthy and had a bad odor.”

Howard Johnson North Bergen

Yes, it is close the Lincoln Tunnel which is easy access to go to NYC, but there are plenty of other Hotels on the same street to choose from. As soon as we opened the door to our room we regretted our decision to save a few bucks and stay there. We have stayed in Howard Johnson's before and they were always nice and clean so we thought it was safe to book this room. Well this Howard Johnson's was the complete opposite and now has tainted the Hotel Chains name in our mind. The carpet was dirty and stained. A strong bad odor was present and there was no way to escape it. The bathroom had stains on the walls of, well, I really don't know. All I know is that we were really disgusted. One more thing that I want to warn you about is that the Hotel is located on a hill. The main lobby is at street level and the guest rooms are at the top of the hill. You can drive up the hill to your room you if have a car, but if you don’t be prepared to haul your luggage, shopping bags, and of course your tired body up and down stairs of a very step hill every time you go to your room.

We stayed at the howard johnson inn because we wanted to try somewhere a bit off the tourist route for a visit to New York at Easter. We were very pleased with our choice. The hotel was obviously new, everything was in excellent condition. We would highy recommend the howard johnson inn at northbergen. More than enough space for a family of five, fantastically comfortable beds, nice location and close to new York

“Good security”

Howard Johnson North Bergen

Security of our belongings plus good access to NYC were the main reasons we chose this hotel, and we were happy with it.
ROOM: Large, beds comfortable. Microwave and fridge both worked, and the icebox worked also. There was also an iron and board. Our room had a partitioned bit behind which people could change clothes in private, useful for families with older children. The bathroom did have some spots of rust in the ceiling, but it was clean and well serviced. There is a safe in the room, we used it for passports, cash, credit cards, etc - there is a small charge to use it.
PARKING: The main part of the hotel is up a hill, with parking behind. This means that your car cannot be seen from the street, which for us was a plus. Your car also cannot be seen from the lobby, but there are security cameras all around the car park, which was quite reassuring.
WASHING: There is a guest laundry, also used as the storeroom for repairing furniture, so at least there are chairs to sit on. Be warned, the washer and dryer will cost you $1.50 each in quarters, but they work fine.
TRANSPORT: The lobby gives you easy directions to the bus stop up on JFK Boulevard. It is a steep walk uphill, so not good for toddlers and those with mobility problems, but at least it is downhill to come back. The bus takes you to the Port Authority in NYC, journey takes about 20 minutes and costs $2.00. Coming back it was easy to recognise landmarks we had noted on the outward journey, and both ways the trip was clean and efficient.
BREAKFAST: Simple but plentiful. We even took a danish each to eat later, and refilled water bottles. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Final word: I would happily choose this hotel again.

“Avoid! Filthy , dirty , stinky!!!!”

Howard Johnson North Bergen

Jul 23, 2007

Avoid this hotel. It is truly dirty and stinky.

TO GET TO THE ROOM : Our rooms were located on the hill, at the second floor ,so it was a steep drive. Our walk up the stairs showed rusty stairwells and the corridor..whew, was stinky!! It smelled of PEE. You probably would not last a good 1 minute staying along the corridor.

ROOM : The room was made up well, but the carpet was really dirty !!! Once you walk on it (literrally with just one touch on the carpet), your feet will really get dirty and sticky. We had kids with us that made it very inconvenient to make sure they avoid the carpet.

BATHROOM : the bathroom had rusty parts. The hair dryer should be replaced. Imagine a hairdryer where you can see the wirings . Once you accidentally put your finger inside (which you can!) , you can instantly die of electrocution.

FRIDGE : Does not really work until you call front desk's attention.

INTERNET : finally, there is a good part. They have free wifi, and it has excellent connection.

BREAKFAST : It was good actually, for an economy hotel. They also offer free internet in the breakfast dining area (1 PC unit)

Book at your own risk... but for me... NEVER AGAIN!!!
